Everyday occurrences at my job.

The keys are reusable.
They do not get cleaned or sanitized when given back.
Please don't let you kids use them as chew toys. and if they do, don't give them back.

This was news to me

I will now toss them on the floor when i check into any hotel.

no, but really

don't sit on the chairs naked. think about it. if you are doing it, how many people before you did it?

i can't stand hearing this

it's the first thing that comes out of their mouth and it makes me not want to help them. your status will not make a room magically appear.
HOWEVER, all (or most) hotel chains have a 48 hour guarantee. if the hotel you want is sold out you can book it and we have to walk someone else. BUT, you now have to pay the highest possible rate that that room goes for. and no, we won't lower the price for you.

speaking of walking people...

with 3rd party bookings all we have to do is call whichever site you booked from and they will cancel your reservation.
and if there is an employee room, we will call them and cancel it.

If we make you sign that paper, we'll hold you to it

Make sure you read what you are signing. Everyone just agreed to pay money if they get kicked out of the hotel. and we'll charge you.
oh, and if you refuse to sign it we won't check you in.
and please complain. no, really. we won't know the room across the hall is being excessively loud if you don't call the front desk.

Be honest

every hotel has a satisfaction guarantee. if you don't say what the problem is then we can't fix it. We actually need your feedback. sometimes we are dealing with problems internally and when a guest actually says that problem specifically we have what we need to get it corrected.

you are either lying or you never stayed at a hotel before

We hand you a slip to initial and sign.
your initial means you accept the rate we are charging you.
your signature accepts that we are placing a hold on your card for room, tax, and incidentals. that box filled with small print is actually really important.
it really gets me when i high status person says this. every hotel hold incidentals. every time. they should know this if they really travel that much.

i really hate liars

and we can tell when you are lying. I'll ask for the name of the person you spoke to because i know you never spoke with anyone. most hotels have a very small crew, and we all talk to each other. no hotel can "guarantee" a crib, or a late check out or early check in. it is always based on availability. and we will not guarantee anything because it will come back to bite us on the ass.
if you absolutely need a crib, bring your own. need a late check out? if we say no it's because we are sold out that night and need the room flipped. you are more than welcome to pay for another night.
want to check in before 3? we will never guarantee an early check in unless you pay for the night before. if we were sold out last night those rooms will not be ready for you to check in at 10am.

o.o

I don't have a room. i can hold your luggage for you until 3. there's coffee in the lodge. but i don't have a room for you right now.
"what am i supposed to do for the next few hours?"
that really isn't my problem. every hotel has the same check in time. every website says the check in time. i will do my best to get you a room, but we can't kick people out of their rooms to clean them faster.
maybe next time you should better plan your time to arrive during check in hours

you are not as smart as you think you are

when a hotel says they are pet friendly, it doesn't mean you can bring your dog for free.
and when you are running with your dog to the room that just shows you know this.
the hotel website will clearly state if they accept pets and what the fees are. so the argument of "i stay at this brand all the time and NEVER get charged!" doesn't hold up. the fees are up to each property, not the brand itself. and we will not refund the fee.

want to know which hotels accept pets? www.bringfido.com

every. single. time.

you chose the cheapest room on booking.com. that means you chose the smallest room.
just because you put on there that you will have 5 people in the room does not mean you get a bigger room. that's not how it works.
if we are not sold out and you are nice about it, we maybe be able to upgrade you. but start yelling at us for your mistake (or ignorance) and we will not help you. and if you decide to leave, we can still charge you for the night because of the 24 hour cancellation policy.
being nice to the people who check you in is the best route to take. always.

employees. we're the worst

employee rooms are super cheap. like, super-duper cheap.
just like 3rd party bookings, you booked that room from your employee portal. you saw the room type. you saw the amount of beds. you accepted it.
we are not obligated to upgrade you because you brought your whole family.

employees. seriously, you should know better!!

when you book an employee rate room your work location and manager are listed on it. you have to bring a paper that says you work at that property. you represent that property. same goes for the family travel rooms (employee vouches for the person they are giving a discount to. your name is associated with that room now).
We've had to kick out an employee room. their job was called and it turned out that they didn't work for the hotel. someone at the front desk got them the room and gave them their pass. they lost their job.

every hotel has "bad" rooms

we get less money on 3rd party rooms. or we have to pay them a commission.
you will get the noisiest room, or the smelliest room. or the room that has damage in it. unless you book on a night when we are mostly empty. then we might be nice.

*deep sigh*

*rolls eyes*
every day. just listen to what someone says when they answer the phone.
i swear one day i'm just gonna reply "no, this is Patrick"

cat tax

say hi to Baby. He is a 10 year old kitty who was surrendered at my local animal shelter.
Please adopt from shelters, senior kitties need love too.

I feel odd now for giving back the key card. I have no need for it or something to chew on it. Not that I would let it chew on the card.

Actually, most of the "this is the way it is at all hotels, and you're lying if you say otherwise" are wrong. I've stayed at many places...

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

with variable check in times, and unique policies. Just because that's how it works in your town, at your chain =/=it happens everywhere

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Complains about customers, but works in hotel that oversells rooms.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Remember people, if you're not a dick, we can all get along nicely

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You just sound like ass hats

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

'working with people' jobs are the worst.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i should make one of these "work stories posts" i work in a retail store that sells Air Jordan Retros in an urban city

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Gas station. I've been thinking about it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Travel agent here: a lot of this is bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

O yes the incidental hold on the CC. "But I'm a world traveler and this is the first hotel to put an incidental hold on my card"

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What hotel is this?? I'm shocked that they don't change the duvet. You think people are just having their anal sex party under the sheets??

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The one my sister worked at didn't either unless it looked bad.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've worked at 2 hotels and neither did a duvet change for the rooms.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't remember the name of who I spoke to.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Me either. I don't remember a name of any hotel worker I've ever talked on a phone.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that last one honestly seems fairly reasonable, they didn't hear you clearly for whatever reason and want to confirm.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

You have to have better stories than this.

10 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 5

You mean like the 80 year woman that answered the door naked and wanted to screw the room service guy rather than tip him? THOSE stories?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Night shift is when the bullshit happens. Dudes once set a bath mat on fire in their kitchen, then poured sugar and salt on the floor to 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

scratch the linoleum. After which they jumped on all the beds and broke the frames. We sent a long bill to the parents after they didn't pay

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this included the damaged beds, floor, kitchen, the disturbance to other customers and the cleaning crew bonus compensation.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was thinking that they posted these because they are the most common dumb things that happen every day. I know that tone: OP is weary.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a front desk worker, we're usually spared the grossest things that happen

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You want gross? I had to cleaned a room where there was a whole bunch of needless drugs and blood. They were doing heroine. I was

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Traumatized the drugs and the needle were removed from the police but we are not trained to clean rooms like that my manager just kept sayin

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Is not that bad. It was I wanted to quit on the spot. To make matters worse instead of throwing away the linen one manager told the laundry

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Person to throw it out the other told him to wash it, it got washed this happened at a brand name hotel. I still cant wrap my head around

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I had to change duvet covers when I worked at a hotel.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's why I always write it down. Just in case.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This wasn't meant for your comment.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the education regarding third party bookings.

10 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

lies, you get given a room or you get bumped but you still get a room.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I just booked a hotel room through one... fingers crossed we get 2 beds so I don't wake up spooning Grandma.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

This is always my fear, because due to many hotels (still) having booking over phone only, I'm forced to book via third parties (I'm deaf).

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Which hotels are you booking with? Even the smaller motels by me have websites

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I often prefer small hotels & inns. Some of those still either have no direct booking / contact (or have only contact via email which is (1)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

often slow and unreliable), and some (especially in Asia, think Japan and China) have no English websites. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My in laws usually look at hotels through 3rd party then go directly to the website I've seen as much ad a 40$ difference

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Works both ways that, sometimes 3rd party are cheaper (block bookings)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And no "finders fee" so it could be cheaper through the website.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm getting the feeling that you don't like your job.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

As a customer, I once was on a site that used the suite pictures to sell the small rooms. So kinda bait and switch going on w websites

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are 3rd party sites that sell our rooms that we have never heard of. They always seem fishy, and have screwed guests over

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I recommend calling the hotel, even after booking 3rd party. They will be willing to work with you on room type if they're not sold out

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Often the hotel provides the 3rd Party with a set of pictures.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a supervisor at a hotel, can confirm they do this sometimes, even if the hotel tells them to stop

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do stories of the "$20 Trick" to get a better room have any truth in your experience?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I have never experienced that. It might be true at larger, pricier hotels.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

what trick? am i missing something or is it just a bribe?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just a bribe. And not often - really, $20 isn't worth my job.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If not sold out I will gladly upgrade them on tier higher of their original booking.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

but when is the best time to brandish this said $20? and how should I do it so I'm not coming off like a total jackass?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the hotel looks dead ask if they are busy. If not the put the 20 in between your I.D and CC when handing them over. And ask for an upgrad

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And if you dont get upgraded they will still comp things like breakfast, parking, or things of that nature

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i would upgrade someone just for having a sense of humor and making me laugh. if i can. i don't know when the best time to slip that $20 is.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone with over 500 Marriott nights: being nice to your lobby staff goes so far to having a nice experience. We know each others names-

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They'll let me check in hours early if I call ahead; they keep the same room reserved for me; they're great people. Cheers to you @op

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I worked at a Marriott and guests like you were the best part of the job!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh we block rooms for our regulars, hold their luggage and have it in the room when they check in. upgrade them when we can. comp them (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

items from the store. after a long tiring day, seeing a regular walk in and be happy to see me can really brighten my day. (2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I want to buy you a beer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or a shot.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#16 I usually confirm "this is in correct?" because the employee often doesn't wait for the call to connect.

Exactly. It's like they start saying it as they bring the phone to their ear, so we only hear the last half.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Ring Ring "...on in Las Vegas, Nevada" "You said this was the Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada, correct?"

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I've called my hotel several times, I never hear the greeting cut off.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 25

Well, I guess that means it's never happened to anyone ever.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I've yet to experience it anywhere I call. But in retail the recording says the store hours and people still wait and ask the hours.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 10

I'm sure the inconvenience of answering the question has been traumatic for you, perhaps you should start a Tumblr blog about it.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

hahaha. aww. you seem to be taking this personal

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Sometimes you say "ty for calling @ waaaay too fast.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

As someone with over 1,700 room nights (with one brand; about 1,000 among several others), you oughta see it from my side of the counter.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

we get that the guest is tired from traveling and just wants to go to their room, but when they get nasty at us for no reason it really (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

puts us off. we want you to be happy and will help where we can. but don't take your frustrations out on other people. and if something (2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

is wrong please report it. we can't fix what we don't know what is wrong. and we will try to fix it (3)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

All I read was that people looking for a good deal get shit on. Good to know

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah always book on priceline, never cared I only need the room for sleep. Don't care about anything else. Never had a problem.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you'd be surprised how many "good deal" reservations come in that are more expensive than our current rates. our rates are the same as the -

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

-third party sites. the prepay to get a better deal is the same as the hotels advance purchase. plus if you're a member you don't get points

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sorry but you sound like a dick.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

it's a cutthroat business, and quite often it's the customers sharpening the knives

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seriously. This persons attitude is a far cry from "hospitality"

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Guests bring it out in us. We are (in my case was) there to help, but guest that abuse staff to get free stuff are just assholes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How? My guests love me, I go above and beyond for them. It's the dicks who come in who cause issues. Are you a bad customer?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

You did yourself no favors by responding with this defensively dickish comment.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

OP seems like an ass.

10 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 5

I am a manager in a hotel and I totally agree, take that shit attitude and fuck off basically.

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

do you not have difficult guests or issues in other departments? i'd love to work at a property that is all roses and rainbows.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Yes, there are always obstacles and handle with care guests but your handling of situations and attitude screams more training

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

i don't ever have an attitude with my guests. i get reprimanded for not pushing back when people get nasty. i offer solutions to problems -1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

to make them happy, so when they don't accept i can't do anything more for them. don't let the customers shit on your employees. it's how -2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I worked at a lodge in a state park. Got a call every day asking what time we turn off the waterfall. The one for which the park exists.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tho wouldn't happen to be Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee would it? It happens there too if not.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope. Amicalola Falls in Georgia.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a GM of a hotel, it's nice to see people posting about the "inside" of customer service. Being pleasant will go a long way folks.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

While true in some aspect, you have to uphold your brand standards.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Very true. I do have quite some pull with my (smaller) chain, so this helps as we aim to connect with our guests on a more personal level.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a Hospitality and Tourism Management major in a Hotel Operations Management class...we are literally trained to handle there situations!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So if the costumer spits in your face what would you do? Happened to a coworker of mine cause they couldn't sale the person lottery tickets1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On a card. Cash only. That coworker is now in anger management classes.2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If that happens we call the police and have them removed from the hotel.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's what all policies say. But not how you would react.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That we are. I do agree that a few of these are a little over the top as far as "annoyances". Most are pretty standard operation lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a travel agent, there are MANY hotel chains that do care about platinum status and will accommodate that guest.

10 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 6

I will guarantee yor res, I will just bump anyone else, the reservation does not get cancelled because thats fucking stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So they'll cancel another customer's booking?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Normally they get the first booker a room at another hotel instead and possibly a discount for the inconvenience.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is fairly common (and used to be much much worse). They will usually try to put you (the non-status) at another hotel in the area.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They are important, we do what we can. But the problem is when that person thinks they are the only guest at our hotel.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

dude you made it sound like you don't give a fuck...there's your problem. it's your job, you should give fucks because people are paying 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

not when people come in and act like we are servants who should ignore every other guest to help them only. being nice gets you a lot more.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

to be platinum members or whatever, and only because of that, you're prejudging them. think: who's the asshole in this situation?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Yea keep in mind to get the highest level status at a hotel you have to stay, depending on the chain, 50+ nights during the year.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yup. Have Diamond status with Hyatt and Hilton. (highest with both) They will both guarantee me a room. I try not to use it since I know 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

what happens to the other guy. But it's nice in emergencies (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

A travel agency work stories/tips would be a great post.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Knowing travel agent personally and hearing all the Shit they have to solve, I'd never book online

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've booked lots of trips online and never had a problem but I do book through the hotel site and never through Expedia etc

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If that works for you, great. But it's not something I'm up for. If I'm spending my money on a vacation, I'd like to pay someone to (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

make sure it's the best experience I can get. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a person who travels pretty much all the time and lives in hotels.. Travel Agents can make life so much less stressfull.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I book business travel

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

from an employee's point of view, every business would work better without customers. they are an annoying inconvenience.

10 years ago | Likes 314 Dislikes 3

"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not without customers, just without the assholes.

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 3

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

you can't fire me, i quit!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you work for a high-end hotel or budget motel?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

probably a motel

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would bet he works for Marriot cause my work stories from there are exactly the same.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would say budget. my bf works in a fancy ass hotel, and they are much different than this

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Any business with any sort of class would have fired this person ages ago - you dont get far when you treat diamond members like ass

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that would be the case if all diamond members acted horrible. it's a few that really take their status to mean they are god. treat staff (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well and they will treat you like a VIP. treat them like servants and you only get what's required of them, nothing more. (2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Being Diamond makes you a VIP no? As in the business wants the repeat customers. While it would be great if they all treated people 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

better, at the end of the day they pay for a service. Suck it up and do your job with a smile or you don't belong in hospo.
