Actually in a desert it's nice to cover up a lot of your skin. Wearing long light fabrics keeps you cooler, protects you from the sun... etc

In desert it's better to be loosely covered to avoid dehydration due to sweating and evaporation and to avoid sun damage

That's pretty much the way they're held. Have to be kept above heads and camera and able to angle it directly at actor's mouth. It's tough.
