The main problem was that they used the Norden bombsight, which meant that once over the target the plane was controlled by the bombadier 1/

The bombs back then had a little propeller that would spin the airstream. After enough rotations, it would arm the fuse.

For context: Boeing has a reputation of building their planes crazy stubborn. Stuff like huge sections of the plane missing as it lands.
