Low tides and high tides in the UK

Photos by English photographer Michael Marten. His book “Sea Change” present 53 of these diptychs, arranged as a clockwise journey around Britain.

I love the boat skeleton.

TIL: Britain has two options. Drought, or flood.

13 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 3

As someone who's never been to the ocean, this happens EVERY DAY??

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And during both, we will get banned from using our hosepipes.

13 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is SO true.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nature you glorious bastard you

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

this terrifies me

As a Britain TIL other countries don't have tides? Dodgy road is Holy Island. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2528/5809654626_95655bd12a_z.jpg

As a Wisconsinite the concept of tides is vague and somewhat foreign having limited exposure to the ocean (I've seen it twice now!)

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, we have tides in America, but I don't believe any get as extreme as some of those do

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, we just don't build and pave at low tide.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I HAVE BEEN TO AT LEAST ONE OF THOSE! LYME REGIS!

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I recognise some of those! Cornwall has a pretty high tidal range.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

TIL Britain turns into Waterworld once a day

13 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 6

*twice a day. Our tide comes in twice in every 24 hours, time and length depending on time of year.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Twice a day, shit. I know nothing of the sea and her mysteries

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's why all us brits have webbed feet and gills.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Note to self. Don't fall asleep on the beach at low tide.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

incoming tides and waves are the subjects for many of my nightmares

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Seeing this gives me the chills because I have a fear of the ocean... but I couldn't look away...

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

All I can think of "The Woman in Black."

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here. That movie was creepy as fuck

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL not to fall asleep on a british beach

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice "beaches" you have there, England - Regards, Australia

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

As a Canadian living along the Bay of Fundy: cute.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's an island in Britain with a road to it that is submerged at high tide. Can't remember where now though. Dammit, brain.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Burgh Island, in South Devonshire, where I happen to live. There's a hotel on the island, which was a setting for a Monsieur Poirot mystery

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's Lindisfarne off the north east coast that can only be reached at low tide.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy island is the famous one, Why it hasn't been a horror film location idk.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Remember when growing up we got stuck on Mersea Island because of the high tide. http://merseaartgroup.webs.com/Crossing%20the%20Strood.JPG

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't need brain, you need Google.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Theres plenty of places in the uk that you can only walk to at low tide. There's a castle off of whitby that's like this.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a cool place in Saint John NB where the rising tide causes a river ("falls") to change direction.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

England: Where "high tide" means "an entire friggin island is temporarily underwater"

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dammit, Moon Moon!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dammit moon moon.

13 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 19

I see what you did there

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I giggled.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This.. This is clever.

13 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Very good sir.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read this and thought "a bit random" and scrolled on by. Then later it hit me "The moon affects/causes tides!!" Came back to tell you & +1

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thank you, thank you. And it's actually both the moon and the sun that cause the tides, but jokes are better when they're simple and quick.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN THAT.

13 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Thanks bill

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 for you. That guy is an idiot.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

TIL: The British don't use the Sun

13 years ago | Likes 260 Dislikes 0

no they use metric.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is this 'Sun' you speak of? Is this the mystic orb of fire in the sky? The skyre spoke of such an object.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

As a British person: The what?

13 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

It's about as much useful as a star at night, so don't worry about it.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haven't you heard of The Sun?

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, the newspaper? But why *would* it be in these sorts of pictures?

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The only use The Sun for the Page Three Girl.

13 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

The page three girls thoughts box is the best thing I've ever seen.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL Britain needs to support efforts to stop global warming or they are doomed.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you been living under a rock with your fingers in your ears? How the hell did you not know this previously?

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Ever wondered what the beach would look like if all the water in the ocean just vanished instantaneously? How cool would that be to explore!

13 years ago | Likes 296 Dislikes 2

I would imagine most of it would look a lot like salt flats with canyons.

13 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It would smeell so bad!

13 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

My god, that's ALL I could think of while looking at these pictures. The smell... THE SMELLLLLL *vom*

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

anyone remember that Nickelodeon show from the early 90's called Maple Town (I think)? They did that. It WAS awesome. And a cartoon.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have no idea how much time I spend falling asleep at night thinking about this. THE PIRATE SHIPS! THE FUCKING PIRATE SHIPS!

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There is a documentary that is about this scenario; don't know the name anymore though.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about now?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

did you ever find out the name ?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The mid atlantic ridges would be cool to explore.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Piles of dead fish just everywhere...

13 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

imagine all the shipwrecks 0_0 it would be eerie and beautiful and stunning.

13 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

ever been to Death Valley?

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If all the boring fish went away and left us with just giant squid and Nessie, too. That shit would be great for spelunking.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Ahem, as a Canadian, this ain't got nothing on the Bay of Fundy.

13 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

Here here!

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Apologise for that right now!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To the google!!!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hey shut up, we don't have much :(

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fairly close, 15m range in the Severn estuary

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Living in moncton, i am really close!

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I just love the Cape Breton Highlands. Beautiful place.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I didn't know these were all from Britain and I was lookin for us. Camp at Blomidon every summer, love those tides!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You will notice despite the tide level our British weather remains the same; Cloudy with a chance of miserable.

13 years ago | Likes 1006 Dislikes 8

Usually I would agree, but today was 22c and fucking B.E.A.UTIFUL...tomorrow...will probably snow or something.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

i saw three blue skies.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know, so many people will not realise you're joking

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, what you are saying is that when I move there in 2 weeks I will get to enjoy some nice cloud cover and sprinkles all day...?

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having lived in Northern California for 4 years, I'll take it over this oppressive heat and life-suckingly-dry air.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it's all about the humidity in NC

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grew up in Alabama. I'm acclimated to humidity.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only at high tide it seems.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On a diet of grey clouds, drizzle; potatoes and fish fingers, we managed to control two thirds of the world. *puff pipe*

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's been sunny for 4 days on the pembrokeshire coast this week. Up until today that is.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cloudy with a *guarantee of miserable.

13 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Would you like your tea with a side of miserable?

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Indeed! Oh and one lump of sugar please old chap.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This might make me stop complaining about the weather in Minnesota

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Miserable weather at beautiful locations and yet Blackpool looks bright and sunny as ever. Book must be broken!

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, we need something to complain about. On the one day every 3 years that it is actually sunny, we all complain it's too hot.

13 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Well yeah... it's still humid. That's no fun.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Like today...today was too damn hot.

13 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Albeit really beautiful outside for once.

13 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Haha I still managed to complain, about being stuck inside working when it was actually nice outside for once

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was stuck in the car driving around from 8am till 6pm, so I got to take in quite a fair bit of Vitamin D xD!

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The Beatles were so excited the one time they saw the sun that they had to write a song about it...

13 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

OMG

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I can just imagine a visiting American telling them to calm down. "It's alright. It's alright."

13 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

im from the Cleveland area... i feel your pain

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am so sorry :(

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So why couldn't Stephanie Meyers' shitty vampires have settled there instead?

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey! You don't wish things like that on anyone, its just mean!

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry v.v

"Ninety-two percent of our days are overcast so as a nation we're infused with a wistful melancholy."

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least we have Argos.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I take great comfort from their chav infested plastic chairs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggOa9aSG-Ow&feature=youtube_gdata_player was what I was getting at.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Argos with its laminated book of dreams :D that's fucking brilliant :)

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To catch the tears of joy. BB ftw.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't take it for granted. In Malaysia, it's 40 degrees celsius. And it's 85%/yr of chance having that same weather. And it's 90% humidity.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If feels like you have to walk a mile to reach water at low tide in Blackpool

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes you actually DO have to walk a mile at low tide in stockport

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OH GOD! ALL THOSE PEOPLE... DROWNED IN AN INSTANT!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that a statue in 4/5?

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was told that UK has shite beaches. Those look fucking epic

13 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 4

+1 for shite

13 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

TIL (sober) people still use "epic." Unless you're not sober. Which is probably the case

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Its use is rare in my vocabulary. But, every once in a while, a special moment occurs where my brain tells my hand to type it.

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

fistral beach in cornwall is world renowned!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're cold and mucky, though.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who the hell told you the UK has shite beaches? I live in Bournemouth... 8 miles of this...

13 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I have been there!

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wasn't aware we had a bad reputation for beaches either, the only fault I have with my local beach (Weymouth) is the number of grockles.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm from Dorchester...HAI! And yeah, Weymouth is packed in the summer, it gets kinda ridiculous. The rides are fun though.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Note: grockle = a slightly negative term for tourist. Not really sure if it's used outside of the south west.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously, can someone verify that Dover really is that fucking pretty?

13 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Devon and Cornwall are picturesque. Great surfing beaches, estuaries, rock pools, cliffs, caves... I'm retiring there hands down.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can verify. I love Dover/Devon/Cornwall. Spent a lot of time down that side of the country.

13 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

All beautiful places, but dover is very far from devon and cornwall! i live 20mins from dover and 6 hours from cornwall! different coasts!

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Still less time than it would take me :P - I am up in East Lancashire hehe

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Rossendale?

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i'll forgive you then! i guess it's all proportional:L good to see another english imgurer!

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the one in Blackpool (#10/11 with the tower and pier) is 30 miles from me, and trust me...it is horrible...HORRIBLE.

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

like whor-able or horrible?

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Both.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As i said, don't ever speak bad of Blackpool. its a holy site for Northerners

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's all about Whitby

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone from Blackpool its pretty much a shit heap

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am a northerner :P (East Lancashire)

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't that describe Blackpool as a whole though?

13 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yep (Source: I'm from Blackpool)

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm 2 minutes away (literally 100m from the Promenade). It's hilarious watching people come from a day out and leave with disappointment

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha, I used to live there, I hated every moment of it.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

on holiday to Scotland and went to a sea loch beach and their were dolphins and rainbow trout swimming around us in the loch :) (2)

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Try the water, see how fresh and cool it really is

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was the first time I properly got sunburnt, so the water was v. refreshing! The water was so clear, you could see everything :)

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You mean you didnt freeze your..... wait, sunburnt in Scotland???

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I speaketh the truth.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Must've been beautiful until they froze in place

13 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

really depends on where abouts in the UK. Essex beaches = disgusting. Welsh and Scottish beaches = the most beautiful experience. I went (1)

13 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

The south coast of England has some stunning beaches.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4r_a5adehs - your first mistake was choosing Essex xD

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't help being raised in Essex :( haha

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have several cats, I could mail you one.

13 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

please, do.

13 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not all beaches in Essex are crap. Frinton has a nice beach.

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Frinton is okay I suppose, once found one a little way up the coast to Walton that was nice. Still not nice compared to places like Cornwall

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is Whitstable in Essex or Kent? It has the most horrible beach I've ever been to.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kent. Basically around the London adjoining counties they're horrible because the Victorians ruined them.

13 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

SOUTHEND BEACH GIVES YOU AIDS

13 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Kent. But I love Herne Bay/Whistable. So much history there, with the Twin Towers.
