What's the point of a long life with no joy?

I'm in this cartoon and I half hate it that it's so obvious.

Black and white image for black and white thinking

Joy comes from a lot of things besides drugs, smoking or alcohol.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or tastes good. or feels good.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You *may* live a long and healthy life

Shut up idiot *takes a sip of my morning beer*

Can't be a day drinker unless you drink all day!

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Such nonsense.

Why would anyone want to live a long joyless life

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Moderation in everything, including Moderation

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Life doesn't give me joy so I'll have to abstain from dying so I can become immortal.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Masturtbation improves health and it's fun, too

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

If you only live once, short and sweet is better than long and boring.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There’s no cure, there’s no answer. Everything gives you cancer.

5 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

Life will kill you.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Don't touch that dial..."

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't try to smile

"I could have had 10 more years if I did all the proper things, but i did things my way" -Lemmy Kimlister

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, life is 100% terminal so if I gotta give up cheesecake to get 10 extra geriatric years? Fuck that.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

But maybe don't smoke, that brings you a lot of cancer

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Is this an add for trying it in the backdoor?

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So... no incessant masturbation?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So no more Imgur! GASP!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes it do feel like that, but it don't gotta be like that unless you're incapable of finding a happy medium.

5 years ago | Likes 180 Dislikes 3

Counterpoint: lead a short but awesome life that fills every day with joy. And by joy I mean extra cheese, bacon, and cocaine.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pro-tip: It is super uncomfortable to try and blend bacon cheeseburgers with cocaine. They just dont mix

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Intergalactic hookers, blow & hedonism 'til we shed this mortal coil? I know just the guy to party with!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Life hack: Since you won't live through the climate apocalypse anyway, don't waste time trying to prolong your life more than 30 more years.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most of the mediums I find, just try to guess names of dead relatives

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do believe you may be traveling in the wrong mediums. Much spoopier mediums.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beat me to it.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It really is about balance. Drinking, drugs, extreme sports? Cool, just maybe chill out every once in awhile

5 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

But don't chill out too much cos then you get other health issues

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Move too much? Knees fucked. Move too little? Believe it or not, knees also fucked!

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

*moderation

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Abstain from moderation. Got it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

See, this is a false choice, and a society that teaches you that you can only find joy in harmful shit is super fucked up.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

The overwhelming majority of things in life that brings joy is not harmful, but we take it for granted and narrow our focus on the excessive

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You are absolutely right. And a lot of people circlejerk themselves on social media deeper into the opinion "unhealthy = joy".

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I mean, I enjoy sugar and salt and all that, but exercise does feel good. Fresh fruits and veggies are delicious. They're not chores.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I hate exercise and eat shitty but I still don't think like this comic. Lots and lots of things can bring joy without being harmful.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

For me they feel like the worst chores. :(

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4. And second, getting good mileage out of herbs and spices. Dillweed makes so many things like 500% better.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. I'm sorry to hear that. Fortunately, with a little work it's possible to get un-addicted to the junk and able to appreciate fresh foods.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3. Making great food for yourself mostly lies in two simple tricks. First, combine flavors that complement each other.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2. Steamed fresh or frozen carrots or broccoli with a pat of butter are amazing, for starters. Or cut yellow bell pepper; it's very sweet.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Technically not true anymore. If you're under 50, you're probably not gonna die of old age regardless. Might as well enjoy yourself.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm here for a good time, not a long time.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pleasure is not the same as joy. If you think eating junk food and doing drugs can fill your life with joy, you are wrong.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bugger that, I’m here for fun times not long times

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Choose a Pareto optimal point along the tradeoff-curve of joy and long life. Negative example: not a physically and mentally grating job. 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Choose to be as joyful and long lived as possible, where any-other choice would then reduce either long-term happiness or life. 2/3

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bet you're fun at parties (no /s) :)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks! In the right crowd, of the right style of geeks, yes.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think a real dr would suggest moderation of the things people enjoy.

5 years ago | Likes 411 Dislikes 1

Some people's moderation is other people's abstinence. So no I did not lie when I said I was a virgin Kate!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Which is a diplomatic saying of the same thing

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do you not know the different between some and none?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Doctors would prefer you to stay away from certain substances, but will sometimese package that message in a nicer way. You know that right?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the dr & the substance. Besides my original point was that no DR would say no to everything that is legally fun.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're absolutely right. My point: The word "moderation" could be used as diplomatic way of saying "maybe that might be not a good idea".

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Moderation in all things. Including moderation.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really hate that add on.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Or Ibuprofen.

5 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

I went through a rough time a couple weeks ago, and discovered ibuprofen really helped my temporary back and hip pain. Suddenly realized

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

that there are probably many people who are taking it multiple times a day for the rest of their lives.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It can be super rough on the tummy though, so I take gabapentin instead. Or meloxicam?… mel something

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meloxicam is also an NSAID so I’m guessing it is as bad as ibuprofen? Idk though

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it had been discovered today, it would never be OTC, so use it carefully, people.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cool, just a moderate amount of heroin then.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, only enjoy the things you enjoy to a minimal degree.

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Moderate != Minimal necessarily.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well you can either have 1 beer a day for 80 years or 5 beers a day for 50 years...

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'll take the beers, thank you.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How many years do you get with 20 beers?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or 5 beers a week for 70?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's.... Less than a beer a day

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or one good night a week.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. I'm 33. Went to the dr. He told me my liver is bad but not irreparable. Now havent drank in a month and its starting to look better

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm also 33 and have drank 4 beers a night at 5% alcohol for a year or so. Could I ask what you drank, how long, and quantity?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Usually IPAs about 7%, Vodka. Whiskey. Usually a six pack or two a week, and usually a bottle or two a month. So nothing too abnormal.
