Description
Lords of the Rising Sun is a 1989 video game by Cinemaware, game design and art by Doug Barnett, released for the Amiga among other systems. Like the earlier Defender of the Crown [https://imgur.com/gallery/pQS5hOC], it was a mix of map-based strategy and arcade-style mini games as the player, playing as one of the famous Japanese generals Yoshitsune or Yoritomo, fights to pacify Japan by force.
Story
Japan, 12th century. After your father has been murdered, you set out on a quest to become Shogun to restore the honor of your family.
You'll have to defeat all your enemies - including your brother. Most of the time, you'll move your troops through the big map of Japan - as soon as something happens, you'll have to fight your enemies in action sequences, such as a Gauntlet-like fortress attack or defending against a Ninja assassin. If two troops collide, a battle might ensue in which you'll have to use all your strategical wits to guide your men to victory.

Trivia - development
"Cinemaware and Lords of the Rising Sun will always be special to me. Designing Lords was a fascinating adventure, and I developed a great respect for Japanese culture and history. The multiple action scenes and their various perspectives were definitely a challenge considering the technology back then. Some of the action perspectives later became popular game genres of their own (pure coincidence). Lords was also the first large game where I did all the artwork - pixel by pixel. I have been a night owl ever since."

Influence
In the short documentary "The Total War Story", Mike Simpson, studio director for the company Creative Assembly said that the company's Total War series of games had been influenced by Lords of the Rising Sun.

In the CD-i version the informative sequences include life actor FMVs and voice acting as well as new background art.
