Just kidding. So glad that monkey is off my back. Quit after 27 years of smoking.
FP Edit: To answer a recurring question; the app in the picture is "Quit Tracker." It is free, I like it. I live in an area where smokes are fairly cheap. At the time I quit I would pay $6.84 including tax per pack. That is what my savings is based off of as I smoked a pack/day.
Someone asked what the doctor said to me to encourage me to quit. I kept using the lack of will power excuse and this particular doctor asked me questions about accomplishments in my life and then used my answers to dispute my will power excuse. He would point out I made it through basic training, spent 20 years in the military, went back to college at 37 and graduated at 41. "Those things are not something with no will power can accomplish."
Then he followed that up with where my health is headed as I am also a Type II Diabetic. I apparently have been since I was a teen according to every blood test I had in the military, but no one told me. Of course blood tests are generally done in physicals before deployments. So why would they tell me.
Some of the things he said really upset me. When I left this doctor ran out of the building and chased me down to tell me he was sorry, and he could tell he had upset me but the he really believed I could do this and really wanted to get how badly I needed to do this across to me.
I was blown away by the fact that this doctor cared enough to chase me down in the parking lot. I quit the next morning and never looked back.
Also what really helped is that my wife quit with me. I failed many times before and my downfall was usually coming home and we would talk about our day on the back porch and smoke. I told her how badly I needed her to quit with me and she did. It took her 2 more days but she did. So you can double the savings that is shown on the app b/c she smoked as much as I.
I only gained about 5 lbs over this year after I quit. I actually lost about 15 lbs the first month b/c I replaced smoking with drinking water. I try to drink 100 ounces of water per day. I gained 20 back, however I said if I make it a year I would then commit to a workout regime.
So here I am about to embark on that journey.
TLDR: I quit smoking a year ago with the help of the Quit Tracker app, an encouraging doc, drinking lots of water, and a supportive spouse.
YOU CAN DO IT TOO!
In closing I didn't expect to make it to FP with this post, but feel free to send me boobs of the female variety to celebrate 1 year of being smoke free.
SociallyAwkwardCanadianMoose
Keep going dude.

Can I borrow $2500?

Good job! Smoking killed my mother. Always happy to see people quit this disgusting habit.

My dad was smoke free for twelve years. Went on vocation with the boys (aka Very old men), started again. Keep your guard up! Good job.
Gweehe101
Wow! Wow! Very admirable. Congratulations. I know how difficult it is to break the habbit and addiction. A huge CONGRATULATIONS. ?????
Redisia
@op stick with it, stopped 2 years ago myself and never regretted it. Cold turkey from 20/30+ cigs a day to 0 :D

Congrats!
InvisibilityON
A lot of “today’s my first day w/o a cigarette” posts on the FP. Not many “one year down.” Posts. Good on you.

Great job OP! I quit smoking in 2004 - I don’t miss that monkey either.
DrCorona365
I've never had a monkey :(
itssohardtobeagoodkitty
If you get one - don’t get the cigarette monkey! Actually, I’d recommend a dog :)
Linanz
Where I live a pack of 25s cost $32.99 and that’s the cheapest brand
pwlfwb
Congrats. My wife is coming up on 4 years. She still gets cravings but they are much easier to resist as time goes by.
Ashysaurus
This just helped me get the last push I needed to quit
originalone

I'm curious how you track _not_ doing something. Do you just click a button at the end of the day that says "I did not smoke"?
SiriLikeAlot
No, you just put in a start date and it will keep you posted on accomplishments. Positive feedback all the time and that sort of stuff.
mikasaur
Nice. Well keep it up!
pastaholic74
Congratulations you badass quitter! How'd you do it? Drugs, cold turkey, sunflower seeds?
NotTheMamaNotTheMama
Got pregnant and made me nauseous
ohmeekrob
Exact same timeframe for me and I took meds. Now I’m just fat and smoke free
onecowboytoo
@op replaced the cigarettes with dicks. He is a big bundle of sticks after all.
AskingTheRealQuestions
That sounds like an interesting recipe for a Thanksgiving meal.
sixorfour
Feed the cold turkeys plenty of sunflower seeds and drugs. That's it. just don't stop. Keep on loading 'em up. MORE COLD TURKEYS! NO TIME!
Steveronie
Don't forget the larger portion sizes and chocolates
jtriplej
I did the patches. Tried several times, but the last time I had a new V.A. doc that just said the right things and boom I quit the next day
woodstock50042
Ah, the 'ol sanity pads!
birdsgocaca
Was she that hot?
ZeroTheDog
I hated the smell and the tasteless food. But most of all I hated the idea of being a victim to a vice. Quit cold turkey after that thought.
ZeroTheDog
Good effort, man.
sykoticflaw
I've tried everything so far. Patches give me chemical burns, gum makes me puke, lozenges don't do shit. VA won't put me on Chantix either.
thirdeyez
VA doesn’t really like to put veterans on it due to the side effects (my guess) keep trying. I used Chantix and made quitting super easy.
ChaSiuBao
Nicotine patches gave me horrible nightmares. Every night I'd wake up screaming and drenched in sweat. Really bizarre side effect.
thirdeyez
It’s because it’s a stimulate, so your brain never shuts down like it normally would due to it.Try just putting the patch in when you get up
ChaSiuBao
Sound advice for most, I'm sure. I tried every permutation of patch schedule to see if I could prevent the nightmares. They always persisted
thirdeyez
Damn, was worth a shot saying something. Just need to find what works. I am 6 months after 15 years and it gets easier that’s for sure
Sneakyfoufou
I tried the patch, gave me sickness, even tried nicotine gums. Weirdly since I vape (no nicotine) I never touched a cigarette anymore
Ohgodsomeonehelpme
Patch was the same for me. Gum made me sick. Even tried hypnosis. Still smoking. Did you quit as soon as you started vaping, or gradually?
flickmysparks
What did he say? Trying to get my parents to quit.
UncleBiscuits
"Quit or you'll die." I bet that was it.
ADisturbedOne
My dad quit, and my mom is trying to quit. I told her so many times I will NOT handle losing my mom to cancer. That hit her.
YourIceCreamMan
3 times for me too. smoked a couple then tried again- 3rd time was the charm. 20 years. Used to cough my ass off. Breathe clear now!
YeOldeImgurian
"Shit nigga that's all you had to say"
ProfessionalDriverOpenCourseDoNotAttempt
Quit or die, right? My daughter is my muse. 3.5 packs a day. Cold Turkey. 10 years so far! Keep it going!
meadmaker
Dear God, what did they say? I have tried everything, been smoking for 16 years now.
theIdris
I quit when I saw someone here post saying that as a cancer survivor it pissed them off to see people purposely smoking. I quit immediately.
thirdeyez
Have you tried Chantix? Six months strong for me using it. Had every side effect (except for killing myself) and would still do it again
ocegur
A friend of mine said what made her stop is realizing she was the slave of horrendous companies and she had to stop that situation.
HitlersPenisAsASwastika
"If the smokes don't kill you, I will"
StrayBullet
FightDirty
I wore 2 of the strongest patches and got a vape pen. 23 years for me.
LebronFrames
I have a serious question. How is vaping different from smoking? There is still nicotine in ejuice. Is it just less that cigs?
thirdeyez
Less cancer things in vape then cigs (notice I said less not none), and you control the level of nicotine in the juice.
WayneGreekzky
The nicotine isn't that bad, it's just addictive. It's the combustibles in cigarettes that cause cancer.
LindseyLohand
Just imagine each cigarette is a syphilitic penis you’re sucking on.
SeamusMCMXCVI
Lil syph micro peens
SirReginaldDukeOfChutney
Disgusting. I'll have to smoke to get the taste of syphilis out of my mouth.

Nic O dick look that up if you've never seen the sketch it's funny
Rinostar
Just say no homo every time before and you're good

Better have a cigarette while you wait, @meadmaker, looks like it’ll be your last
Notallthosewhowanderarelost12
7 months here, after smoking for 20. Don't even think about it now. However it took the strongest patches and champix combined (1/2)
Notallthosewhowanderarelost12
For two months and I weened myself of both. Never thought I'd be able to quit but I get that champix doesn't work for everyone.
MyLeftEggHurts
You really should try vapes / e-cigs. After 20 years as a heavy smoker I could finally get rid of it.
radicalcat
For me it was my dentist who said that my teeth will get loose and eventually fall out if I don’t stop.
MyleKeville
How does food actually taste?
00WinterSun00
I quit after 22 years, I didn't find food tasted any different, I'd heard that but didn't find it to be true in my case
Noshitsherlock808
Yeah I'd say only pallette cleansers and fine alcohols do that kinda the same thing
jtriplej
Food tastes great. I've always been a good cook, but now it seems like I am a gourmet.
deadlyvenom354
That’s one of the best parts of quitting food tastes 10 times better
Norrah
How does it taste better if you quit eating food?
FirePrinceZuzu
Everyone says this, but when I quit, food tasted the same.
elizardo
true
Cheomesh
Tongue damaged too badly.
FirePrinceZuzu
No. Food always tasted great. And the problem isn't your tongue, but your sense of smell.
rustyshackilford
My sense of smell was intensified, but mostly for foul smells
FirePrinceZuzu
haha that's some bad luck :(
impalacrush
Especially those cig breath / smoke after you succeeded cold turkey, i swear to god i got a headache smelling that
