Mysterious Front Door Fungus

Jan 19, 2016 3:04 AM

Day 1

Looks like a pile of couscous. Wet/squishy on the very outside but hard consistency. Has a pretty good grip of the *inside* of my front door.

Day 2

Hard and dry to the touch.

Day 6

When I touched it, the hard outer layer separated from the fine powdery inside.

Day 6

After I removed the white hard layer, there was this dense fine powder. Mostly sticking to itself but extra-fine powder particles (spores I presume) were coming off at this point.

Day 6

Picked off brown powder mass with knife, left a little mark on the door. Anyone know WTF this is growing in my house about 1/4 mile from the ocean In Humboldt County California?

I hope it's not this. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/2063942

Mildew, most likely. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mildew

Mildew doesn't grow like this. Even if it was, I'm looking for something more specific than "mildew", there are many types/species of mildew

Mold. There is moisture in the cracks which is a perfect place for mold to grow.
