Combustion REALLY isnt supposed to be taking place inside the turbo housing. There's a reason ALS kills turbos in like a couple races.

The air IS hot, super HOT, but should not be combusting/producing light (as in the image) If it is, you lost a ton of power in the pistons.

Also, what you are thinking of (I think) is a supercharger, that runs off the crank shaft. "turbo" anything means exhaust gas.

Also, in every turbo I've seen (which is not all) the exhaust is mounted VERY close to the manifold, and the spinny part you can see 1/2

Its the air side of a turbo and should not have fire in it. Exhaust side of a turbo look different and exhaust is not flames its a gas. 1/2

The exhaust side is the outside. Rich fuel exhaust has ignited hence the flames etc. The air intake goes through the fins in the middle.

Some race cars will put a spark plug in the exhaust manifold and run rich, then fire off the plug to keep the turbo spinning when not WOT.

It's a really cool system, it's used in both f1 cars and rally cars.

F1 cars currently use hybrid turbo's that use electrics to keep them spooled up. Among other F1 witch craft that they will not reveal.
