PSA for dog owners

I just got back from the gym and Repede (my husky) had gotten out of his kennel and with the help of my cat; got into a pack of gum containing xylitol. xylitol is a artificial sweetener that is very toxic to dogs and Orbitz gum is the worst(it can kill a dog in less than 15 minutes).

Ran and got some hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting....only to find out thats not a good thing. So im freaking out and immediately called the pet poison hotline. After a few questions they helped me out but still advised to get to an emergency vet clinic ASAP as xylitol causes a rapud drop in blood sugar for dogs.

I called the vet and headed immediately. Time was not on our side. Get to the vet an muzzled Repede and got ready to draw blood to test his sugar levels. Had to shave his arm and took a big fight to get blood drawn as he was really scared.

Vet comes out and said his blood sugar levels are normal and they cant follow protocol and keep him overnight to draw blood every hour cuz he is such a baby. So they gave me a few cans of dog food and he has to eat every hour with syrup or honey drizzled on top. I got Mrs. Buttersworth maple syrup to do the job as long as its not sugar free. This is to keep his blood sugar up.

So for now he is still with me but the fight isnt over yet. Gonna be a long night and the coffee pot is brewing. So if you chew gum and have a dog; make it xylitol free gum and to others that chew, properly dispose of it in the trash can.
