These guys deserve the real props.
ciarusvh
What I wouldn't have given to work in practical effects back in the day...
tyrunn
They used fucking loads of blue screen in star wars though
pontypool
what a repost
eggmuffin
Nice. But why submit such minuscule images?
JaggedMetalKrustyO
Film making for a more civilized time.
PhantomGeek
I'm so sick of green screens and computerized imagry! Old school rules
oberkrom
Man, that exhaust port WAS small!

SuperNintendoChalrmers
Before the greenscreen... Before the empire...
csilver24
They used green screens and blue screens to film any ship that was out in space and not against a certain background, like the Death Star
iprobablydontlikeyou
So much more impressive than a guy sitting at a computer
croctopus
That shits not easy to model either way as far as I'm concerned.
DennisFroese
Interesting... Especially the old chev shaggin wagon in the back of the last 2 photos.
pelicansfightingterrorism
How did they shrink Porkins?
fr1080f
I find it hilarious that it's filmed in a parking lot.
legthief
@OP they had greenscreens. And blue ones, red ones, yellow, black, white, etc. It all depended on what was being filmed and in what format.
DownvotesAreMyNectar
So, you cant get flames in space, or, you can but for a moment, so how do flamey esploshuns look? Air-ey and debris flying everywhere?
Bukefalos
Yeah well, that wasn't GOOD enough for you, was it George...?
aCoolBreezeOnAHotSummerDay
I can probably appreciate this more than the CGI effects today. The physicality of it makes it s but more real even.
mikeatike
Before CGI, these would have used greenscreens for the part where you can see the death star or ship and space at the same time.
eggmuffin
*bluescreen (greenscreens became the standard later)
justforthis42
duh, filming on the real death star in space would have been way too expensive

Thanks for the recession, Nixon...
MikeNutshell
I think he meant - before CGI :)
MrHinges
Why did you bother to repost this?

This is better than the post.

I can hear Picard yelling.

SomeGuyWhoSaysStuff
Back when behind the scenes stuff was super interesting. Now it is all green screens, CGI and guys sitting at computers.

Except that, that one is awesome. I mean movies, not commercials.
hawks88
I smell ignorance
SomeGuyWhoSaysStuff
There is no one closer to your nose then you are, it must be your own stench.

Someone needs a hug
kageboshi
They had bluescreens, not greenscreens.
VelociRandom
Genuine question - would they not have used both? There were probably scenes where bluescreens wouldn't have worked well.
truth71
...greenscreens started being used. I can only guess it's because the green works better with computer systems, and blue was better for (2)
truth71
I don't know how reliable my POV is on this, but I remember "bluescreen" being the term in the 70's-80's, and then when CGI came about (1)
truth71
...the old style of "key in" technology that was used in analog systems.
resetner
Green is more common now because cameras and displays have twice as many green pixels as they do red or blue. 1/2
resetner
This results in greater resolution for green, but any of the colors can be used and occasionally are (and always were). 2/2
HulluSteve
Oh, but they did have green screens.
resetner
Yep. Blue was more common, but green and even red were occasionally used, and still are.

Putting a big ol' dot here to watch later

Samagon
I mean, technically, they were blue screens. And they used it to add one filmed scene to another filmed scene, not add an actor to digital
OntariosFinest
Why change to green ?
BlueToePolca
Google will serve you best.
ReallyBigRocks
Depends on the scene, they used bluescreens in ROTS too, all you need is a highly visible color
nope6699
And also a color that is not in the clothing of the actor, or it will change too to the background.
