#1 is perfectly sexy. #2 is so pointless and broken it hurts

This really grinds my gears...

SadPuppies
As an engineering student you should be able to see these don't make any sense.
MistarMackey
More, you slut !
Harunimi
We need gravity accelerated gears... Hmm....
RBCPA
The second one made my scalp tingle. Very very nice
beingthatguyagain
All I see is loading gifs
SatinSpoon
This isn't the prob I asked for....
millenniumf
That second one... can you 3D print it? Because I'd totally buy it.
DefunkMyJunk
'Engineering student'. As an actual engineering student, this'd cover about 0.001% of what you see. Also, 1/2
notpaultx
I saw this in all of 1 class in undergrad, then quickly forgot it once the upper division classes came up:/
DefunkMyJunk
The first one looks extremely inefficient, nothing to excite true engineers
Rubes27
If you're going to be the guy who point whores by being an engineer, at least post working machines.
pipiqueen
I don't get why people call neat stuff porn, isn't porn supposed to be messy and sticky?
Jufasa
Slippery not sticky
Einstein9073
I think the second image would be sufficiently messy to meet that criteria.
SomeWhoCallMeTim
therealeeyore
The funny thing is... the Gear Wars were really never about the gears.
jpww
#1 anything's a dildo if you're brave enough?
WaitForItTheMongols
Not my usual porn but still satisfying
cdanea
The 1st has no link between the gears and the bent rods that slide above. They could have if there were gears or diffs under the triangles.
shark127
^The gear is fictional. In a real model the rods and upper triangle would be rotating with the bottom triangle and hitting other triangles'
cdanea
As an engineer, i can't consider it engineering porn, unless it's feasible. Thi is just 3d animation, and as such, it's nice indeed
mauricesvay
Here's some, in 3D https://sketchfab.com/models/c3de438ab6b54a3b88ebc89c080c1a61

Both of these don't work at all irl

Jufasa
Not using a clutch?
underscoreneckbeard
Not enough lube, usually.
ireadyouremailz
the fact that the gears on the logo don't even match?
sovietass
I mean, the gears are supposed to be grinding, right, not working smoothly?
weeshful
i don't buy the first one. i see nothing that would keep the points oriented away from the center
WarPatron
also how do the other triangles rotate, the L shaped members seem to move magically up and down.
BingleyBingleyBeep
They aren't fixed on their ends, they pass through the triangular plates and slide. The same is true on the outward facing plates.
Belcanto
The teeth on the gears?
snowfork
Yay, I'll bump this! That mechanism is used in right angle tools that run at low speeds. There is a component removed from the system.

MikeAlvelais
I was thinking the same thing. They'd turn with their triangle bases. If their center pipes were fixed to an outer wall, I could see it.
internalin
The outer points also spin for no apparent reason.
mediocremedic
I believe it's the stationary horizontal bars that provide a high enough moment of inertia such than in an ideal system the plates (1/2)
wholelottaderp
It would be centrifugal acceleration vs friction so you'd never see it so perfectly oriented. The mechanism is underconstrained.
mediocremedic
rotate rather than the entire assemblies. I think. (2/2)
Misslnformation
That first one needs to be a gatling gun
OneMoreRide
3xBrrrrrrrrrtttt
SevenLeagueBoots
For when you need to kill everything in the room very quickly.
Misslnformation
Accept no substitutes.
BYERE
Gatling gun turret for when you need to clean an entire room at the same time. Nice trap for those pesky adventurers in a Cyberpunk game
mikkelson92
Heisenberg would be pleased...

why are the edges slanted? is that just an aesthetic preference or is that somehow better than straight-edged sides?

I stole that. I'm not going to use it anywhere, I'm just going to look at it from time to time. :-)

HYNGGGHHH...
Jeeperscreepersj10
This is what the gears inside of an offeoad winch look like.
StormyFoxx
The second one is wrong. The gearing teeth don't match up.
GR3453m0nk3y
As a mechanica engineer, it's fine. They match up.
frebbie
bruh do you even gear?
StormyFoxx
I do. I have to fix and repair planetary gearing in the M1A2 SEP V2 Main Battle Tank
frebbie
Sit down, have a joint, and watch the second one for a while and you will see that the teeth do indeed match up.
myusernameisnotvalid
It's a helical gear. I use a similar design on my 3d printer extruder mechanism
InitWho
Hey..Yeah. damn, the magic is lost.
StuffinIt
Was going to agree, but I looked at it again
TheRealScotchie
It actually is correct, even though it doesn't seem like it is.
FiatLuxIam
I think it would "work" technically, but not practically. Looks like a lot of added friction on those teeth. Would wear fast.
NS0229
but it do.
AmSaiCo
Severely underrated.
AwesomeName
You are right! I need to smash something...
Thirdy
look again and it will smash your mind °^°
BananaAppleFunTime
Actually, I feel like they are, because of the angle of the middles teeth, and the point of view, makes it appear like it's not matching up.
LeDonoMkIV
Was going to say the exact same thing. The worm gear is fine. Shitty short non loop gif tho
ctesibius
It's cromulent. The gears are helical, so the are sliding diagonally as the wheels turn.
peglos
Have an Upvote because Upvotes are cromulent.
iamOzymandiasLookOnMyWorksDumbassAndDespair
YOU are cromulent!
CallMeJerryBecauseIAmJerry
Have my cromulent upvote, you helical bastard
SiddharthV
The second ones pretty strange, mainly because those two inner wheels would get stuck and the whole mechanism would break at some point
edwardelricsnipples
As a mobile user, that's exactly what just happened
SevenLeagueBoots
That second one looks absolutely pointless. It pleases me. I must have it.
drasparagus
My sentiments exactly.
Elfabet
Drive shaft in the lower right. Steady change step out gear (on an angle!) on the upper left.
KatyaThePyrate
Exactly. With the same words and everything.
GraduateBanana
you are changin a rotative movement in his perpendicular axe (i can't use exact english words for describe it better). It's not so pointless
shitinacamaro
Would look awesome on my desk.
MrPredator
The first one I "might" see a point to because of how each rod lands on a specific spot, regardless of which mechanism it's on. 2nd one?
driveslow
Aye, could be used in an industrial / manufacturing manor.
PyroPlayer92
The second one is basically the same principle as the gears that turn the wheels of your car...
Agouti
Only if it's an automatic, and the mechanism is flawed anyway - the left ring gear would not turn in that situation and clips the right.
awkworduse
Nah it revolutionizes the bike chain.
bohemiancrabcity
Maybe like a low gear for higher torque? Looks like a neat desk ornament.
JeSuisUnPiano
P...put your dick in it...
NuclearVWwasAlreadyTaken
The second one has the surface of the teeth on the small ones sliding relative to each other. You cant do that lol
WhatzitTooya
Of course you can. Spiral bevel gear for example. Or a worm gear.
FlesHBoX
Well, you *can* as long as you don't care about longevity, lol
NuclearVWwasAlreadyTaken
yeah, it works as a cool desktop model, but has no engineer would apply it to anything lol
FlesHBoX
Exactly
bonsaitree
Not with that attitude you can't! Realistically though, I think the tooth patterns could be changed to make it work without sliding.
NuclearVWwasAlreadyTaken
http://www.vibratesoftware.com/images/Ring%20and%20pinion%20small%20push%20away.jpg
NuclearVWwasAlreadyTaken
It would be a ring and pinion gear set up, but you would end up with a different location on the second gear
bonsaitree
Oh yeah, easily done as a ring and pinion setup, but I think it might be possible to stick with the setup and make it work with a worm
NuclearVWwasAlreadyTaken
The issue with that is you would have to have two helical gears attached via the worm gear, and you can't drive a worm with a helical gear.
