Fairy penguins

Woke up with one of these cute little fuckers staring me in the face one time. When camping many years ago at Mt Maunganui,. My mother 'rescued' it after seeing it bashed a bit from the surf amongst the rocks. Probably didn't need rescuing..... but anyway she keep it overnight and it escaped from its temporary home and roamed around the tent for a bit and decided to stare me down when I woke up.
Released later that morning.

Also, they don't sound as cute as they look. They sound like a strangled cat.

We usually call them little blue penguins in NZ - and the Māori name, kororā, is becoming more widely used.

theyre also not actually penguins. in fact, there are no living species of penguin. the last living species of the genus Pinguinus was the great auk, which went extinct in the mid 1800s. none of the modern species of birds generally called penguins share the same genus. they were simply called "penguins" upon discovery due to their resemblance to the great auk. convergent evolution, i suppose.

They used to be called fairy penguins until someone decided that was homophobic.

No, they are still called that.
They have 3 commonly used names.
Little is just one of them, they are also called Fairy, and Blue Penguins.
And it's mostly a regional thing as to what name will be used for them. Little is more their scientific name with Fairy and Blue being more common names. They never got renamed, it's just people are interacting with the different regional names more now on the internet, with the Little name being the more commonly used one because of that.

Yeah, nah. It was only part of Australia that called them Fairy. They'd been commonly classified as Little elsewhere for ages beforehand. Its more of the adaptation of international naming conventions...not pc/woke gone mad.
Bit like the claim that they renamed Marathon bars Snickers in the UK to stop the joke...."Why should you never enter a Marathon?"
