Dark humor can be fine-- it can be *good,* as demonstrated above.
It just depends on how the relevant parties feel about it, and it's not a defense for humor that punches down or amounts to "but sir! Tis my emotional support slur!"
When my father passes away last year me and my brother had to organize the funeral. Part of it was deciding on the music (no church involved at all). My brother said "what's about 'always look on the bright side of live'?" and i said "yes, this, at the grave when his urn is added". Laughing and crying at the same time, this " ah fu** it, what cha gotta loose, you came from nothing, you go to nothing, so you loose nothing" moment.
Our darkest humor was when we lost our daughter at birth, we joked about putting a 'Baby On Board' sign on the hearse, which my wife escalated to "with 'It's A Girl' balloons coming out the side window". š³ Grief & anger, and a great deal of love.
My father died in 2015 of cancer. My family grieved him dearly. In 2020, after months of lockdown shenanigans, I had my mother and siblings at my house for the 5th anniversary of his death, which is just before my birthday, discussing about how often we still had something we wanted to talk to him. I looked heaven-wards to address Dad... then stopped and shouted "Oh wait, Dad!" at the floor. It took many minutes before we all stopped laughing, Dad would have been laughing hardest.
In a few weeks we're having a memorial for Dad's older brother, who died of the the same cancer. I expect the extended family will have similar jokes and toasts to his memory as well.
Mom never had a license, & my husband would always chauffeur her everywhere. It was a major inconvenience but he could be counted on to do it regardless. When she passed, the funeral home called to say that her ashes were ready to be retrieved. We hung up the phone & he said, as he always had said to me, "Ok babe I'll be back, I'm going to pick up your mom." & I swore I could almost hear my mom cackle. It was the last time he would pick her up but I know she would have loved the joke.
My junior year of highschool we had a ridiculous amount of deaths in the family, 4 uncles, an aunt, my great grandmother, and some random other relatives/friends. There were like 12 funerals in one semester. At some point in the middle of this my mother, sister, and I were standing in line to see the family at a wake, it was a long line and we were actually outside waiting when a car drove by loudly playing "Another one bites the dust." We had to excuse ourselves and hide in our car.
Friend of mines grandfather would always joke "you got that dollar you owe me?" When I was young. Don't know why or when it started. Went to his funeral in my 20s. Put a dollar in his suit pocket.
One of my favorite memories of my late father in law, is the whole family sitting around, not long after his terminal diagnosis, chatting. His wife was complaining about getting older, as one does. He quickly responded with "You should try the alternative!"
While my friend lay dying in his hotel room from a drunk driver, the friends from different stages of his life met for the first time and told their favorite stories. We laughed and cried and laughed. One kid admitted he was the one who drove over his mom's flowers but Andy took the blame. His mom laughed with us.
I was expecting the grandfather, after feeling satisfied with getting the buck... suddenly making a very solemn look on his face and then passing the buck back to the godfather in a last gasp, then passing away.
So, always look on the bright side of death, Just before you draw your terminal breath, Life's a piece o' shit, When you look at it, Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true, You'll see it's all a show, Keep 'em laughing as you go, Remember that the last laugh is on you.
We had Bright side of life played on Cello as the exit music at my mums funeral. Seeing people's faces when they realised what the song was was awesome.
I'm thankful that Mel Brooks is still holding strong, due to turn 98 this June. But I'm wondering if he has some dark humor prank prepared for when he shuffles off to that great comic gig in the sky.
One of my dad's cousins was a hero of mine in my youth. He fought in the Korean conflict and told some great stories. He captivated everyone around with them. His stories were about the worst things, but he always found the silver lining, and I learned to do the same. I was even cracking jokes on the way to the hospital when I was shot. I've been treated for cancer recently and it takes all I have to not joke with the doctors and nurses.
Let the docs and nurses hear it. I know a couple and the grim reality they deal with could use a moment or two of humor. Just don't deliver the joke when they're trying to run an IV or something.
LOL funny enough I made this at 6am today when I couldn't sleep because of the pain. Japanese milk bread it's so soft and fluffy I have a hard time cutting a slice off without crushing it.
Yeah I got the good stuff hydromorphone and methadone. But I'm also in that group that has stupid tolerance to narcotics so 9mg of hydro with 5 mg of methadone is just enought to take the edge off and let me get a little sleep most of the time I need an extra 4mg-8mg of hydro on top of the normal 8 hour dose. Daughter has a few special loli pops from the reservation going to try one. They apparently also have the good stuff.

I like dark humour. What I don't like is racist/sexist/homophobic jokes using the 'dark humour' description as a way to avoid criticism.

If it wasn't for dark humor my entire existence would be so, so fucked

Sometimes the darkest sliver of humor gets us through moments no one should have to endure.

Grandpa should have taken the dollar, reached out and touched the godfather and said 'last tag!' and then died.

dark humor / gallows humor, helps us keeping our mind sane when confronted with the insanity of life.

Everybody dies. Not everyone truly lives. Deep friendships can be really dark AND funny.

I work in palliative care: gallows humour is the best, most cathartic humour in the world. You've just got to pick you people carefully.
