A truth about Brexit

Jun 25, 2016 9:29 AM

So this is the EU at the moment. It makes laws for all member states, regulates business and trade as well as allows all people to travel where they want. Obviously this has its ups and downs...

The EU was originally just a Free Trade area, "Great Idea!" everyone thought "We can do business easier anywhere!"

But then Maastricht came along....

The Union began to evolve to create laws for its member states, and the European Court can overrule any smaller countries legal decisions - just wondering - would the US put up with that?

So we're all Xenophobes and Racists.....

Thats what alot of people who voted Remain would have you believe about Leave voters. Immigration was one of the issues (Leave wanted us to have a Australian style or US style system.....so racist right?). But another of the reasons people voted for Leave was in order to take back control of the billions we send to the EU (some of which they graciously spend on us - thanks) and so we arent involved in a Greater European State in the future.

For example - the EU is having its own army soon.....the great 'European project' is one day pledged to create a superstate - whats wrong with not wanting that???

FREEDOM! - Or not quite

So people are saying Scotland might just up and walk out, sorry guys, not going to happen. Scotland had an independence vote 2 years ago and voted to stay in the UK. The EU was actually a much smaller part of that decision. Bigger in Scottish minds was their economy - (largely oil based, and we know how thats gone) and the fact they didnt want the Euro, which they would not have a choice over now....

Opinion polls for Scottish independence are already being taken, they're showing less inclination towards independence than 2014...

'Rule Britannia' they shout as they drown in the Atlantic.....

Nope. The United Kingdom is the worlds 5th largest economy, America, Germany, Japan, and China have already said they want to begin special trade talks immediately. The £ fell, and now has already recovered. The stock market fell, and now is back on track.

So yeah, we're going to do just fine.

Thanks Nostradamus.

why do i feel when you say the EU is bad that me as a Belgian feel like you're angry at me for somthing i can't controle.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is my opinion that you have a dangerous misunderstanding of how the European Union operates.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, Australia is pretty racist towards its Asian immigrants. And the immigration debate in US is also heavily clouded by xenophobia.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your concept of back on track is laugable. And... the billions? you get back almost as much money as you sent, the difference is less than

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 9

100 million a year, and there is nothing wrong--quite the opposite--with a modicum of wealth redistribution amongs member states. The world

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

2. survives, that's what it's used to do, but you just made it a little less good of a place with this inane and insane decision

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

Long live the UK!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also France overtook us as the 5th largest economy. This is typical leave, outdated nonsense information.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

"Would the US put up with that" is a weak argument. America and Britain are vastly different. Also, state rulings are regularly overturned>>

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

>> by the supreme court. It's a little ironic to ask that, especially because it draws on the unpopular(In the us) idea of states rights.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes but we,re a country, not a state, and i dont see foreign powers intervening in your courts

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

First part is disingenuous. The only reasons to leave were stupidity, laziness or xenophobia. A lot of people in Scotland voted to stay 1/

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 9

because they were assured that staying in the UK was the best way to make sure they stayed in the EU. Lastly no we're not 5th. I'm not 2/

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

at all surprised at the way you voted. 3/3

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I would love to see the breakup of the EU

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 11

There are a bunch of countries now considering leaving and even the EU bureaucrats are saying for Leave to win there are issues with the EU

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As yesterday under a similar post I suggest once again - a downvote orgy

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

While the Scottish independence is certainly a possibility, the rest of the UK could definitely survive without them.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Actually- recent polling after the vote suggests the desire of the Scottish people to leave the uk is dwindling

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, I can only hope that their are fewer people who buy into Westminsters lies and fear mongering this time.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The EU fell hard into crazytown when it wanted its own army.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

There is no Eurocorps, you twat. Those guys are BORDER CONTROL in the employ of the Union.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Limiting immigration isn't racist, it's classist. Stop oppressing the rich and taking away their right to flood the market with cheap labor!

Racist Delusions: British edition

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Gpb hasn't recovered for shit. You apparently don't follow the market.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just wait until they start producing Kentish strong ale in Germany at half the cost and twice the quality. (Kentish strong ale has a PGI)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yeah. Just like we are all racists because we support trump... Get use to a minority of people, that are the loudest, saying shit.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Real question though. Why do you support Trump?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want an honest answer I'll give you it. I was military. I am a working class man now. He isn't afraid to say what he thinks or 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or acts. He represents the way us workers and military feel. We are fed up with career politicians. I may not agree 100% but still

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only thing correct in this post is that, in the medium to long term, the U.K. will probably be ok.

Not in and of itself. But go and listen to the rhetoric behind it and tell me there is no xenophobia...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sometimes, but it depends on true factual trends such as benefit/welfare usage etc. and gauging whether that's sustainable or even deserved.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't the cowards the ones scared of the immigrants? There seems to be a lot of fear in the leave camp.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Immigrant = freeloader

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Immigrant = Hard worker who takes the jobs the natives feel too good to do.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

"the natives feel too good to do." realy..?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Wait! The EU is developing an army??

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yes and they will wear swastika and have HQ in berlin.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No they're not. They're building up border control.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Trade is good. Foreign control is bad. The EU offered both, which is why I get both sides. Lets hope Brussels doesn't kill trade from spite.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

it's complicated, foreign control is sometimes useful as well and trade isnt good in itself

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Europe needs us more than we need them. The trade deals will be sorted out without issue because of that.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's just if they don't want to make an example of the UK and not care too much if it will also harm the EU...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well said! I'm fed up of being called a racist just because I voted leave! I'm an immigrant political science major graduate for f*** sake!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 10

Then why did you vote to leave? Because everything OP said was bullshit. Did you have a valid reason?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

2- with immigration- I a point system like those used by Canada and Australia would be fairer. It's time Britain took back its sovereignty.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's not bullshit. I don't think a United States of Europe is a worthwhile plan, and that's what the EU is a framework for. I have no issue

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Yea, you'll be fine. You'd just be better off within. It's not wrong to want the things you stated, a lot of ppl just think that they are

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

outdated. For a century now Europe has been in a state of de-nationalisation. UK took a step back, it is ok, we respect, we regret, we move

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

on, as some EU parliamentarian said. A lot of people, especially younger, well educated ones, feel like Europeans first, then like Polish,

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

German, French or whatever. I get that all the hate pouring down on the leavers is annoying, but the leave took away a lot of chances for a

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

lot of people. And those people i feel sorry for.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually the correct term is globalization of which the UK rejected yesterday which is a great step for mankind

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

No, I don't mean globalisation. I mean what I said.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What are the pros, if any, and cons of globalization in your mind?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the views of certain other nations towards such. I would not accept their rulings over my constitutional guarantees

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The different laws and cultures of each nation do not represent one another. Take my views on right to own and use firearms vs

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our immigration system isn't necessarily racist much as just fucked up. Some people are trying to make it racist though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't know why anyone would look at American immigration policies and say "we should do that!"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

'Would the US put up with that?' That's exactly what the US is, The supreme court of Texas can't overule a decision the federal one made

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

But you're all American..... There isn't a foreign power making your laws

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

But once upon a time it was a foreign power, and the Confederacy went to war with it. They lost, and now they are a single nation.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

1 Not American just a fellow European that's glad you left, 2 No one was American when the US was created.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don't think anyone was Texan either...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes they were British, French, Dutch, German can you see where I'm going with this?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The US is a Republic.. @OP was referring to a collection of independent countries (like the EU) but in the west. and no, the US wouldn't.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He found the worse example possible on this planet as the US struggled for years and even fought a war to become the country it is today

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's fought multiple wars (with other nations AND internally) to get where it's at. IF the US had an opportunity to diplomatically leave /1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My bad for not clarifying the American the civil war.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the UK in 1776, I'm sure the founding fathers would have. /2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, UK is now not the 5th, because their economy just tanked. v #4 "WAS" true.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Still 5th by all major measures im afraid....

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

And additionally, our pound has absolutely NOT recovered. It is currently worth 1.23 euros, which is EVEN LOWER THAN YESTERDAY.

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 5

It's amazing that these people keep claiming the pound recovered. All the really happened is it stopped plummeting.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

well it began recovering as it did raise

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Stop being reasonable

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

actually yesterday I saw it go to 1.16 so it is recovering, I imagine it will recover in a matter of months

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 8

I'm pretty sure that a pound being worth 1.16 euros is NOT recovery, buddy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1gbp=1.23 eur, 1.36 usd,9.03 cny. I check from from xe.com they lost 10 points yesterday and gain back 3-5 point.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so maybe we can say recovering but like a dent not big bounce.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was reacting to the previous guy but yeah. Pound is still in the shits, stock market even worse.
