A quick trip to the local fabric store and my foam guy.

Essential tools (glue gun not pictured).

Starting with source images. This really shows off how boxy Carl's face is.

Planning all of the elements.

I drew his face enough times that I could do it from memory. Now from notebook to scale

Grid lines to make sure the left and right side of his face match up. If one side is lower than the other, he would look all stroke-y.

Happy with the grid layout

And now the terrifying part - the cutting.

Draping felt to add wrinkles and other features

Baseline. Glasses made from particle board which is stupidly expensive.

Added foam mold wrapped in cosmetic fur to get the hair to look like this. Also made hearing aid out of moldable plastic and painted it.

Wife taught me how to use makeup so that I could add the appropriate shading. He looked like a ghost under strong light otherwise.

Wool coat, quad cane, Ellie badge (hard to see), and ridiculous bowtie

Russel's source image

Trying to figure out the elements of his face. Harder than the other characters.

time to start carving

After carving

Yes, the baseball hat stitching was necessary. Doesn't look right without it.

Happy that the panels came out. Got it to sink in at the middle by tacking it to his head with more needle and thread

Wouldn't be complete without makeup!

My brother helping out.

More people helping out

He looks like he's ready to take your house.

Kevin was, by far, the hardest costume.

Made the head, but foam just didn't look right. Needed the beak to be shiny and hard.

Wrapped the model in tin foil

Bought a bunch of moldable plastic...

...and draped it over the tin foil

After making top and bottom jaw, painted with acrylic paint and then covered with a few layers of Modge Podge

Built body with sheets of foam. Made relaxing incisions to get it to drape correctly. Used a pool noodle for the neck and reinforced it with brake line from a local car parts store.

About $100 worth of feathers later, my wife was finally happy.

Bought some cheap slippers and added extra toes to look like a bird's foot. We also bought her matching grey leggins. For her arms, we covered a shirt in feathers to match.

And since we had just had a baby, we decided to kick off her first Halloween right..

This is my little baby Kevin. Bought a Cookie Monster outfit, ripped the eyes off, and used it as a scaffold for gluing on the foam and felt elements.

My wife adding the paint and feathers

The little outfit, complete with booties to look like bird feet

The row of costumes.

For the people that made it this far:
1. The foam costs nothing. Most foam outfits make custom orders from large blocks of foam. Whatever is left after it's been cut to spec is trash. I grease one of the workers $20 and it's done. Now, I just show them pictures of this stuff and it's free.

2. There are holes for the eyes (they just look black), there is a hole under the nose to breathe and drink beer without removing the head, and we wear them in October so it's nice and warm out in the cold.

3. No one featured is single. The girl dressed as Ellie and the guy dressed as the construction worker came late, so I didn't get a group picture. We have an actual golden retriever, but I didn't want to mess with the leash and a quad cane.

4. These are last year's costumes, so I'm getting rid of them. PM me if interested.

So this is what people do instead of drinking and spending all day on imgur. Huh.

Curious how much all the materials cost

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It was already cool, and then there was Kevin and I almost lost my shit!

12 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 0

The baby Kevin did it for me.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it takes a real blockhead to make this costume.

Can I get these.. I have a group of friends aged 20-30. We will rock those at New York Comic Con.

As a Texan: The October cold? What are you talking about?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The level of awesomeness these costumes have is up there.

12 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Super cool, but how do you see? Did I miss that part?

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

they eyes aren't actually black - they are holes. They just look black because light doesn't make it back out. You can see fine.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 1. Be Artistically Inclined Step 2. Have Money

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is Halloween, so Is it Cosplay or not?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Now I feel inadequate.

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Finished costumes: (Worth loading all the images IMHO.)

12 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

I had to try four times to load this post. Kept accidentally swiping back. Stupid mobile imgur

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Thank you!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

step 1. Acquire artistic talent.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But I don't had anyone :(

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is pretty fucking impressive. Mostly that you have a wife and baby and still time to make elaborate costumes.

12 years ago | Likes 815 Dislikes 0

That was my exact thought! I have a two year old and I'm in bed by 9pm through exhaustion...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't it amazing what you can do when you don't spend your entire day sitting online looking at pictures of what other people are doing?

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I mean, I wouldn't call that "amazing". Like, seems pretty straightforward what you could accomplish when you have an entire day.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

IN the past three weeks, I have met and started dating an awesomeeeee guy. My Xena costume has been pushed to the wayside. ugh.... lol

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

Is his name Gabrielle?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

He clearly does not know you were planning a Xena costume; otherwise, he'd have given you a blank check and said "call me when you're done."

12 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

hahahaha well he does but we keep doing that whole disgusting new relationship need to see each other a lot shit. It even grosses me out.

12 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

You should go out with me. I want a girlfriend but I don't want to hang out all the time

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hahahaha

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"So...whatcha doooooin?" Yeah, I don't miss that.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hehehe

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What was the 4th head (black hair/glasses) the construction worker? If so, where are the shots of that person? Curious about the costume..

12 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

These are the hard-hitting questions we need answers to!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The women on the right (holding the baby) seems dressed for that part, guessing she just took the head off to hold the baby.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

me too. I wanna know

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But... how do you see?

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's what I was thinking too....HEY OP!! How do you see?? Also was is claustrophobic in there?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why hasn't there been a gif of Up where upvotes burst out of the roof and carry the house away from the ground? (Instead of balloons.)

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 164 Dislikes 3

SQUIRREL!!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

**dug**

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He was a TALKING DOG!

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

While I do agree "Doug" would have been a better, less obvious name for him, the character is, sadly, called "Dug".

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

Should have called "rent a pup"

12 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

*Dug, Mr. President.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You have a "foam guy"?

12 years ago | Likes 2287 Dislikes 4

My exact question

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Do you not?" -Sterling Mallory Archer

12 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Were talking about cumshots ... Right?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Asking the important questions

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you not?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I asked this out loud verbatim.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scrolled down thinking "I bet you anything the top comment will be 'you have a foam guy?' Guys, I think I have PMS.

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

How's the cramping? (I do believe you meant ESP. Unless this is a reference I missed.)

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

can I get his number - my foam guy is lowes and its expensive

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's awesome how so much of humanity can have simklar thoughts.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Souds likeba drug dealer, lol

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have any idea how expensive foam is?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can I be your foam guy?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will you be my foam guy?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It sounds so sinister for some reason. Must know more about the foam guy.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I immediately thought, "I need a foam guy..." By the way, amazing craftsmanship. Very well done.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This......is the only reason I scrolled to the comments

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I want foam guy. Or maybe a foam girl... Yeah, definitely a foam girl...

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you tip a foam guy?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Duuuuuude, you need one if you're gonna be making pieces like this. Last year I made a Prof. Genki costume and couldn't afford the foam.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I have a guy for everything." - OP

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, they're like your... foam team?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I knew you damn retards would put this comment on top.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do. Have you tried buying foam at a craft store. It's really pricey.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am so basic.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Hahahah

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not cool enough for a foam guy :-( where can I get lone?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was my initial reaction.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and a fabric store. i wouldn't know where to find a fabric store if i were standing in the middle of one. draped in fabric.

12 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

As a quilter, fabric stores are heaven on earth.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just follow the smell of old people, you'll find one. (Seriously though, every fabric store I have ever been to has smelled of old people)

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe old people smell of fabric stores...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You might be surprised, I use them to buy headliner material for fixing old cars. I see tons of parents hauling multiple kids and scouts.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

OP is Hank Hill. Of course he does.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't everyone?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I could hook you up, i could talk to my "guy" guy and he could locate a foam guy in your area

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should always have a guy for everything.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn it exactly what i thought! Went straight from pic#1 to the comments just to see if others were as curious as me on this one

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You dont?

12 years ago | Likes 403 Dislikes 1

TIL, I need a foam guy..

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

I hope you are not lactose intolerant because the next word is...

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My papaw used to work at a foam factory. We had foam as mattress, insulation, trampolines.. There was always a random hunk of foam somewhere

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Now I feel insecure. Is this is a thing I need to get with? How do you find a foam guy?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my first thought exactly.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to live near a foam store. I'm 90% sure it was a mafia front.

12 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

No, but OP asked me to put him in touch with my Guy Guy so my Guy Guy could find OP a Foam Guy.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He prefers to be called foam plug.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I need a foam guy

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No but I have several liquor store guys and beer can foam so actually yeah, I suppose I also have a foam guy or two.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thought...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure he is Barney...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

is this not common? i have 3 fabric stores in my area and a furniture custom foam place i get scraps from... random projects ya know

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So you can just go to a place and ask them for their scrap foam? What sort of place specifically for ...arts and crafts?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

its a foam place for custom furniture... so when you go in they have a MOUNTAIN of scraps from projects you can buy by the trash bag

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Too late to post this exact comment. But +1 to you!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My first thought exactly..

12 years ago | Likes 130 Dislikes 0

Haha. I love when I scroll down and realize there are a whole slew of people who immediately think the same things as me.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Mine too.
