This is my dog Prince. He's a 2 1/2 year old German Shepard/Lab mix. I have been camping all my life but recently got into backpacking after I picked him up. Here are a few images from my experiences with him.

What does he have in his saddlebags? Food, snacks, & toys?

The biggest issue I have with the bags is distribution of weight. Because of that he typically has 2 nalgenes and he water bowl/tennis ball

Right on; Weight considerations must be accounted; I was considering a few of those collapsible water bladder; the hydroflask is too heavy

I didn't mean the actual weight I put on him (though I do think about that) but rather that both sides are balanced.

Oh yea, I figured as much; ensure you dont overload "el puperino" as well as ensure the pack is balanced

Definitely. I think I read somewhere that it's around 20% of their body weight which they can carry. So he can carry around 15lbs
