Fun favct: during the Age of Sail, a 'butt' was another name for a barrel, specifically one that held drinking water. To 'scuttle' something was to drill a hole in it - be that to sink a ship, or to get water out of said barrel - a scuttled butt. Scuttlebutt is literally the old timey term for water-cooler chat.
It's my favorite philosophical discussion (of which I'm familiar). Ship of Theseus and... ummm... okay, it's the only philosophical discussion of which i'm familiar.
Philosophy professor here ... how about this ... your cells die and replicate all the time. In about 7 years, they have all done so. Does that mean you are not the same person from 7 years ago? You're not even the completely same person who wrote that reply! Who even are you??!?! Imposter!!!
My preferred answer is that both are the Ship of Theseus; one by being, one by becoming. As I see it, it's basically just the flip side of Sorites, in that both are only paradoxes if you require one canonical definition for identity and heap, respectively.
There's only a couple of hundy operating in the UK, but Euan here is one of less than a dozen operating in England - the rest, unsurprisingly, are based mostly in Scotland. #WaterOfLife
Globally, estimates are about 2,000 professional coopers, however there appears to be a slight resurgence in the craft.
I'm a big fan of both. Euan is genuinely passionate about his craft, and strikes me as an really down to earth dude. Alec has become incredibly good at explaining things f9r the average Joe like me.
Coopersmiths. I studied the craft briefly, and can say almost all of his tools are significantly older than I am, and most probably older than both of us combined, and his methods? absolutely and completely authentic. This is not his first rodeo, and he may be in 4 digits. ( over 1000 barrels ).
take a gander at this brine barrel from 1787. It looks to me like the work of master hooper Josiah Wooldruff, who learned the craft from his father Jesiah Wooldruff, who in turn learned it from his. The slats are not flat. They're curved. The base of the barrel is approximately 20- Every barrel is inspected before usage. The key is that the oak was cured and shaped by Josiah's cousin Joshua, who was a cooper and not a hooper.

The Barrel of Theseus.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that now he's got wood of different ages making up a single barrel? Your whole flavor profile is all skewumpus.

They better note on the bottle that it was only an 86% spanish sherry cask ... I can taste the difference! Someone pass me the Clan MacGregor...

More bothered that drilling the bung hole looks to leave tons of shavings in the closed barrel?
