I lovvvvved my lil hermit crabs as a kid. I'll never forget thinking my dude "Mark" had died, only to learn that he shed his exoskeleton and moved into a bigger shell.
I ran an experiment on this years ago. Scooped up a bunch of hermit crabs, put them in different colored bowls, with a bunch of different colored shells, to see if they picked shells differently based on the color of their environment. Nope.
I hate to be the fun police but do not support the hermit crab trade. Hermit crabs cannot be captive bred so are all wild caught. They are not made for captivity. They have complex care needs including heat, UV and humidity regulation, without which they will live short stressful lives.
When I was younger at my family's beachhouse I'd collect shells and hermit crabs from the beach and have a "shell store" and watch the crabs switch shells.
I've often thought it would be fun to have a bunch of artificial shells made with a website and tracking number on them and then throw them in the ocean to see where they would pop up.

But THIS little guy is like "Oh hey, could you help keep me on the table, while a do a little switcharoo here?"
