That agreement was solely for the general election, and other candidates could have signed similarly before primary kicked off. Not uncommon a thing. Sanders lost by millions of votes in the primary, and was mostly winning low turnout caucuses and failing to win over black people, who are a significant part of the Dem party. Part of why he lost is the media assuming HRC would get 1000 super delegates while starting him at 0. Had they presented it like a fair race, It would have at least been closer.

I keep hearing the argument that the super delegates weren't allowed to decide a race, but they very obviously had an influence when the media was shouting "HoWeVeR cAn He WiN?!" while unfairly showing Hillary with all the superdelegates. Why the hell are we letting inner party members pick and choose our options for president instead of the people?!

That disqualifies almost half our current crop of elected officials. He's only 7 years older than Clinton. I would not have a problem electing someone that was 73 - 75 at election time, if they could pass a dementia/Alzheimer's test. Yearly tests for everybody after 68, with published results to compare for loss of function. A cognitive version of IT/Networking CNA test (fail a question and they drill down to explore the specific flaw).

There are also problems with term limits, in that more power goes to relatively anonymous party leadership. Real engagement of the public is needed, ultimately. Better primary voting would help cut down on those who are unfit, one way or another. Entrenchment power and apathy are the deeper problems - age limits and term limits will probably not do much to limit their impact, considered on their own.

Problem is you don't magically get better politicians with age limits or term limits. You need people to get involved. Encourage local and state reps to prepare for higher office. Else you just get party puppets who get appointed when a term limit hits. Corporate shills who get put on the ticket to grant favors. Voters don't vote or get involved in primaries. We need people to get involved.

Cmon man age does start to matter in their bloody 80s. For every person that’s still in amazing health at 80 there’s a ton more that aren’t and it’s not the ideal place to have people struggle with dementia or other types of impaired faculties.

Bernie is an outlier I don't think he really sways my opinion. In theory term limits could do a lot of good by stopping career politicians and removing the elderly infirm puppets. If that's true, it outweighs losing one good politician early. The perspective effectiveness is still debatable, but losing Bernie early isn't really a great argument against it imo.

The only argument I've heard AGAINST term limits is if we put them in place, we'll have a sudden influx of well-known individuals who know how to navigate the labyrinthine mess that is DC beauracracy, and most of them will probably choose to keep working anyway, so what job fits for a person who knows how to get shit done in DC? Lobbyist. If we cut off lobbying first, term limits become much better in theory.

Yeah, I think the problem is that dementia gets more likely as age increases, but it's hardly guaranteed at any specific age, and all sorts of mental problems can strike younger people as well. Age alone isn't a good factor. As an aside, I'm not even quite sure what term limits are supposed to accomplish. Give challengers a chance by reducing the name recognition of the competition by removing the incumbent?

I'm sure there must be a better way to improve elections than to just throw people out after a while and keep everything else the same. Ranked choice, voter education initiatives that present all candidates on equal footing, etc.

Studies indicate in a way i find very convincing that ranked choice voting yields outcomes that more closely match democratic intent than any other tested strategy in almost all scenarios. I'm confident they would help as would automated district boundaries that, for example, minimize circumference. Term limits might help mitigate incumbent fund raising advantages and passive voters but most adherents seem to just disagree with election outcomes or think kidz rule, oldies drool.
