It really feels like they’re trying to attack a very visual form of disability access as a way to be take rights from the disabled.
Also this idiots claim of a “disability lobby”. The only way the ADA got passed was people pulling themselves up the stairs of the capital because there were no ramps. It shocked and upset enough people that they passed the ADA (which is still very loosely enforced).
Another also, if captions are fine, then lets turn off the audio and see how accurate that captioning is in a real time emergency situation!

Most often when concerts I go see have an ASL interpreter performing, they are 100% hype and usually my favorite part of the show. These people are just finding one more thing to complain about. Fuck em.

Is nondisabled really the applicable term these days?It denotes the existence of disabled people, and last I heard (no pun intended) the hard of hearing, actually any differently abled persons, don't want to be labelled as disabled. I mean I don't mean to be that guy particularly since I use subtitles for everything and it would be hypocritical of me to deny anyone an alternative but are we settled on that nomenclature? I'll say this every time this is posted: Thanks to how disabled people are handled in our school system, an inordinately high number of deaf people graduate HS unable to read. They need ASL far more than they need closed captioning. Something like 60% of deaf people cannot read well enough to comprehend closed captions.

But it's a completely distinct language and I would expect that many who use ASL as a first language might not even be able to read English. So, no, English subtitles aren't equivalent. And a thing of note, they *have* to be put in that situation by an outside force. They won't do even the most basic amount of work to ensure that their viewpoint has any empathy or understanding at all. Take this very case as an example; it's incredibly easy to turn on closed captions to see how reliable they are, and it takes very little experience with them to realize that they are often not very good at all.

Well I tried to explain to law makers and budget makers that 1 in 2 men get cancer (and 65% of those get it regardless of healthy living), so that we could get funding and laws in place for the cure for cancer that was published the year the human genome project completed (2005). Yes 100% first of all because yeah sign language needs to be taught and second I've worked in restaurants and the amount of people who don't understand a basic hand signal is weirdly high. Like I'm not even talking complex stuff I'm saying if I hold up three fingers I mean three.

I can’t explain it any simpler than they just can’t stand to see others benefit or be helped. ASL interpreters have no negative impact whatsoever for those who are not hearing impaired, but they provide tremendous help to those who are. So why are they so offended by them?

By the way, closed captions suck, especially for live broadcasts. They often lag behind and miss a lot of context too. (Something else I wish we could fix.)

As a person with the benefit of hearing who uses captions when I don't want the volume blasting just to catch the quiet stuff, I find the accuracy of captioning quite poor and getting worse. Quite often it is using the wrong form of a homophone, and often splits words into two soundalike words that are nonsense, or runs two together. It is particularly bad at anything outside of 5th grade general knowledge.

I've had anime subtitles explaining every specific Japanese joke / reference / untranslatable pun on one side and series that couldn't get two subtitled sentences in a row correct.
It's not all like that but damn... So much money to make a movie or show. At least make sure the subtitles are correct! It's such an easy way to noy push people away from your show!

I worked in a building that had mostly hearing impaired or fully deaf tenants. A good percentage of the deaf were, in fact, unable to read. Captions would be useless to them

Sponsored captions on recorded TV shows? More or less fine. Captions on live TV? At best, unreliable; at worst, trash (when they aren't just stopped for lengths of time for no discernable reason).

That's really the point. Recorded TV shows aren't generally the place you see sign language translators; it's usually live speeches or emergency alerts.
Anyways, this should probably be framed as an attack on disabled veterans; the usual crowd seems to take greater offense against that sort of thing than they do over random civilians being shafted for having a disability.
