7 main slide positions and you can play multiple different notes in each depending on what you do with your lips.
There are slide positions. You kinda just go “where is the slide handle compared to the bell?” Then it becomes muscle memory

I started playing before my first growthspurt and at that time 7th position was at my fingertips (arm fully extended)
I grew and for a while afterwards I kept accidentally sliding the slidy bit off the end mid-song, it was very aggravating at the time lol

Elementary school band teacher here: you make the instrument buzz with your lips at different levels low to high, but there are gaps 1/2
between the levels. By lengthening the instrument using the hand slide, you can hit all the notes in the gaps between lip levels.
