Navy forgot to retrieve this MK-25 after their nighttime maneuvers. Officer is still standing down there waiting for Hazmat. Every 10 or 15 minutes someone stops by to snoop.
My wife was walking on the beach and sent me this photo. I advised her to please not pick it up as that would potentially cause immense pain.
Called non-emergency and the cop shows up. Assuming that it was already spent, rolls it over, and much to his surprise it begins spewing phosphor clouds and flames.
no4o2xf
Looks like it already burned out - hopefully the scuttling charge went off already, otherwise it goes off 10-20min later.

helloassholes
Lol my dumb ass would have snuck off home with it
biblioteker
Yeah, here's your sign, good buddy.
amatte
Lol the non emergency line ...No it cause major burns call 911 it's more a job for a firefighter anyway due to posiblity of chemicals inside
GreaterDog
@op These things are activated by seawater contacting the exposed battery and completing the circuit after the plugs are removed. Cop
GreaterDog
probably reactivated it with the remaining water inside by tipping it over.

In the navy, you forget your m-25s

*points to sign* [PLEASE DO NOT KICK ORDINANCE]
biblioteker
*Ordnance. Kick all the rules you like, just don't hammer explosives with yo' feets or the surgeons won't put you back together right.
circlebreaker
Sweet Jesus... I looked it up, and Ordnance IS the explosive type. How did I never see it in writing before today? Sounds the same out loud.

To observers, he probably looks like he is contemplating running into the ocean and ending it all.

One of those washed up one episode of Bondi beach
Slasher2977
Wow someone's gonna have a bad day explaining that one.
biblioteker
Yeah. A really bad day, all the way up the chain of command. Possible loss of rank, pay, and position. May not be a permanent career-ender
Penn246
These are fire and forget items. They are NOT recovered and usually sink after a secondary scuttle charge. No one lost anything 1/2
Penn246
The unit that launched it, likely launched more than one and has no idea that it didn't scuttle. These are pretty common in the Navy world.
bitemark
For those like me wondering: http://www.pica.army.mil/pmccs/supportmunitions/signals/marinemarkers/mk25marinemark.html
bitemark
Tl;dr: it's a marker that releases a shitload of smoke so retrieval units can find you
Metallica93
Did the scuttling charge malfunction, then?
TheUtahn
I WAS wondering! Thanks partner!

Thanks for the info. Looks like they wash of up on beaches from time to time. Googled Navy phosphorus canister.

Do you mind telling me where this was?

It's basically a waterproof flare you throw in the water when someone falls overboard to mark their general location. Big ocean is big.

Could be coranado California, I know the navy runs drills there frequently.
ProbablyDrunkAgain
I think they only pop those out by San Clemente Island, so it must have traveled from there, if it is in SoCal
jlv816
You can see San Clemente island from most of northern San Diego soooooo
ProbablyDrunkAgain
But that is the range, where they do shit, sooooooo
jlv816
I think we were saying the same thing lol, I was just elaborating on how it was likely found in north SD vs Coronado or something.
root1657
On a very clear day, if you look the right direction, you can see it from the top of the cliffs at Torrey Pines.
xMOISEx
Yes guys I know what Willy-Pete this round is. I work for NAVAIRSYSCOM. I want to know where this took place and when is all.
xMOISEx
Willy-Pete isn’t something we take lightly. Red is worse but white is bad enough.
gigsra
So what’s going on here exactly?
biblioteker
It's a live munition with serious hazmat issues. Deadly in some cases. Somebody's ass is on the line with this. No good outcomes.
gigsra
Thanks for explaining! :)
biblioteker
As a loggie, I want to know who drew it and why it's not being accounted for by the unit commander and his boss, who won't want dumb excuses
Penn246
We use these in the Navy for MOB exercises. Used to create a gate prior to making a Wiliamson Turn. Harmless... when handled properly.
Bundacious
I taught the Williamson turn this morning!
sgukkju31415
What is MOB? What is a Williamson Turd?
sgukkju31415
Turn!
Penn246
MOB ex. Is man-overboard exercise. During daytime MOB you throw one over each port and starboard side. Perform a Williamson turn 1/2
Penn246
(Like a U-turn) and drive the ship through the two markets, and the man will be on the other side of the markers (aka - the gate). 2/2
Sm9yCg
handling properly includes wearing hazmat protection so any lose phosphor doesnt burn your skin and flesh off your bones.
Penn246
Perhaps after ignition, but I assure you launching these is simply turning the leaver on the top with your bare hands and throw 1/2
Penn246
Usually a good spike into the ocean will submerge it long enough to ignite. Lasts about 20min burns white smoke and a good flame 2/2.
Sm9yCg
Does this one look like it's *before* ignition to you? Does it?
Hatchitt
Could someone explain why even touching the outside is a bad idea for my fr-who am I kidding I don't have friends I wanna know
Hatchitt
oh. OH. the LAST SENTENCE ABOUT THE SPEWING AND THE PHOSPHOROUS shut up I didn't go to word school
Durendal5150
It's not just the spewing part. Even the residue post-ignition, or traces of unignited phosphorous, can be extremely hazardous .
labmonkey
Sm9yCg
Chemistry 101: Burning is oxidization. Phosphor takes the oxygen not just from air but anything else too, including your skin and tissue.
Hatchitt
So you're saying its a great source of antioxidants for health and beauty
aBJisStillaJob
You're a true hero. I thank you and bless you with a thousand goats milk
Sm9yCg
so it literally burns your skin off.
biblioteker
It'll burn a hole right through your body. How's that? Put a chunk of burning phosphorus on your shoulder and it'll exit at your ankle.
Hatchitt
I thought that was just my girlfriends purse
