the 3d model

matched to in game model size. Real world size ~56m length. This puts the 3d print @ 1/175 scale.

full view of chassis

Main chassis and tire primed. wheel armature unprimed. 6x8" Intuos3 and microSD for scale

cabin section.

windows are masked over for LED to shine through later. 1/8" holes will be drilled to mount LEDs later.

tail section

wheel and armature assembly

6 of these for the baserunner. Round rod is main axle, latches onto tabs inside the chassis to hold it in place once assembled. Square bar is thinner, flexible, locks inside the chassis to form a torsion suspension per wheel.

Turret + Repair beam module

forward section starboard side

few coats of base paint and color scheme to match vehicle from in-game.

cabin area.

Windows are tinted with transparent watercolors. In retrospect I should have split this section into 2 pieces for easier access to mount LEDs and wiring.

blocking out colors on the aft section

another angle

dorsal turret closeup.

base paints and start of weathering

wheel unit

real sand from Chesapeake Bay!

details

"Mara S'Jet", still need to clean up the lettering. Small details are made with Sharpie markers.

Lights!

8 white LED high beams in banks of 4; yellow LED 4 forward and 4 markers.

rear section has 2 red tail lights and 2 yellow marker lights.

fully assembled and painted

top view with prominent S'Jet emblem.

close up

night time action

drive cabin

4 white LEDs for cabin interior. not as much light gets through the windows as I hoped. but it works.

Repair beam

lights up too.

tail marker and driving lights

beauty shot

Some electronics are still in the mail: Battery charging circuit and RF remote switch for the lights, so I don't have to open up the back to turn the lights on/off.

Ancient Artifact for scale.

perhaps inspiration for Pride of Higarra

Neat!

Definitely one of the coolest things I've ever seen someone make and to appear on here. Keep up the great work.

56 m length? It's like ten times more than I would expect.

Well, this IS Homeworld we're talking about. They've always had a thing for enormous vehicles. Also: http://imgur.com/5VvUBJb

I would pay money for a model kit for anything from the Homeworld IP.

This is the best stuff I have ever seen in my life.

Thanks for providing banana for scale, missed the SD card when watching on mobile

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's AWESOME!! I've always been pretty terrible at Homeworld, but it's still among my favorite game series.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh man. Can I get those .stl files? Please?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now make a life size one. I'll be impressed then.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want a 3D printer. Soooooo bad. That said, your work is brilliant! The weathering is gorgeous!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice! Homeworld ftw!

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Is it from homeworld? Do they have land vehicles there? :s

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They made a land based rts recently, it's set when they find the first hyperspace gate thing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The newest game did, Deserts of Kharak

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aw shit there's a new game?! D: Gotta go look it up ASAP!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed it. Haven't played in a few months, but the story alone is worth it.

In that case, this should make you giddy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1yrFE9FfrA

Sweet! Thanks!

What kind of printer was this printed on? @gkerman

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What kind of 3D printer did you use? Cause that resolution and quality is incredible.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

+1 for this. I would like to know too. That z res is amazing smooth

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I printed through Shapeways. The tires are PLA, common desktop printer material like MakerBot, cheap, but less detail.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

rest is white flexible plastic, good all around material, fairly cheap, holds good detail. typically not for home use due to printer cost.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

always an upvote for homeworld

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You made a thing. Please make more things!

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

Or take this existing thing and make it RC!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had yet to find a reason to own a 3D printer. But you just introduced me to it. Niiiice.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And these days, you don't even need one. Shapeways made me a pendant from The Longest Journey out of what looks like bronze for just ~$25.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was a good game, really nice custom model. Hope you scan a lil rachel to stand next to it with a scanner or something

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Problem is that at that scale, I think she'd end up less than a centimeter tall. Pretty hard to tell who she was at that size.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, microUSB was for scale, expected banana - didn't realize it was drawing tablet sized.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kharrak is burning.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The whole Hiigaran saga still gives me chills. I played both games as a youngster and they spoke to me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was such a depressing moment when I was young.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What game/movie/realm is this vehicle from?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It says it right there in the post description. A strategy game called Deserts of Kharak.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I see those words nowhere on this post, but thank you!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IDK if the mobile app just doesn't show that text, or what, but that's all I can assume.
