I witnessed an awkward incident recently. Cute butch lesbian was flirting with the cute short bartender. Bartender sat next to me to goof off during a slow period. This type of wire woven jewelry is found throughout archeological sites in Scandinavia and surrounding areas though I've never seen. That exact method for starting the weave, I have done this myself in the past. There's actually several different weave patterns too.

This is frequently called "viking wire weaving", and is quite easy to do this level.
The way I was taught, you make a series of loops of gardening wire and seat *that* on top of the wood, twisting up the top and leaving the bottom with its loops 'gloveing' the post. This allows you to do the same looping manoeuvres, but without needing to constantly add and remove spikes into the wood, which some find inconvenient

(the difficulty is in making the 'stitches' or loops tight and even. That is Heccin' Hard. But you can make some decent jewelry very easily if you don't mind having a wee bits of inconsistencies.
Additionally, you can use different colours of wires to allow for variation in that way)
