Hoax: "A boy left his bike chained to a tree when he went away to war in 1914. He never returned."

Truth: The bike was donated to a man named Don Puz after a house fire. Because Puz actually hated the bike, he left it in the forest of Washington State’s Vashon Island in 1954.

Hoax: "In 1809, a woman named Jane Todd Crawford rode 60 miles on horseback to see a doctor to remove a 7.5 lb tumor through a 9" incision in 25 minutes. 25 days after the surgery, she rode back home, and lived for 33 years."

Truth: The story is actually 100% true, but the problem about the photo is the date, photography didn’t exist in 1809, and the plaque marking her grave disagrees, said she died in 1842.

Hoax: "Children playing on computers during the massive flood in the Philippines, 2012."

Truth: Simple photoshop, look at the reflections, they don't add up perfectly...

Hoax: "Ancient alien/astronaut carved into the masonry in the New Cathedral in Salamanca."

Truth: The statue was actually carved in the cathedral, but was actually made in 1992 after the building was undergoing restoration, which included depictions of modern-day society.

Hoax: "Photograph, taken in 1925 of a girl visiting the grave of her twin sister who died in a house fire the year before."

Truth: This image, along with many others, is a picture used in the book series "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" to help tell the story, usually edited to help the effect.

Hoax: "Sharks swimming in local areas during Hurricane Matthew."

Truth: Hoaxes like these go around the internet almost every time a major weather disaster happens, the images are simply just photos of sharks in the ocean edited in with Hurricane Matthew photos.

Hoax: "If a thief forces you to take money from an ATM, punch your PIN in reverse. If your PIN is 1234, you punch 4321. The moment you punch in the reverse, the money will come out but will be stuck in the machine and the machine will immediately alert the police without the thief’s knowledge."

Truth: The Federal Trade Commission analyzed the potential of a panic code, and concluded that it wouldn’t work. Also, the image is simply just a random montage of a guy being robbed at an ATM.

Hoax: "Bullfighter Álvaro Múnera faced with the bull he was supposed to kill, But stopping during the middle of the fight due to epiphany that bullfighting was wrong."

Truth: The photo is not Múnera, it's of another bullfighter named Francisco Javier Sánchez Vara. Vara is actually placing himself in a position in front of the bull to show that he isn't afraid of him.

Hoax: "Ian McKellen wearing a shirt that says "I'm Gandalf and Magneto. GET OVER IT."

Truth: The "I'm Gandalf and Magneto" part actually said "Some People are Gay."

Hoax: "Spiritualist Colin Evens levitating during a séance, 1938."

Truth: various magicians have pointed out that Evan's blurred feet in the photographs are proof that he simply jumped high into the air.

Hoax: "A sign posted on the door of a shop in Houston's Harwin Central Mall says the store will be closed on September 11 to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Ali, purportedly a 9/11 terrorist."

Truth: "Imam Ali" is actually referring to a sacred Muslim figure that died in 661 AD, and has almost no connection to September 11th.

Hoax: "Fully-grown men from Giza forced to marry young girls under the age of 10."

Truth: A popular tradition in Gaza is to have other family members dress up as brides and grooms, the only people in the photo that were captured was the little girls and the grooms.

Surely the Ian McKellen one isn't a 'hoax'. It's not really tricking or deceiving anyone for any purpose.

The ATM one: what if you PIN is like 2112 or 4444? Backward is the same as forward.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some People are Magneto?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are security systems (not ATMs) that have a PIN duress code, but it's just your PIN +1. Much easier to remember.

The story about Jane Todd Crawford isn't 100% true: her tumor wasn't 7.5lbs, it was 22.5lbs! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephraim_McDowell

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It sure looks a lot bigger than 7.5 lbs in that image

This isn't really applicable to this scenario.

You're telling me Sharknado isn't a documentary??

1842 - 33 = 1809

#12 "has almost no relation..." It literally has no relation in any way shape or form whatsoever

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It does have a relation to 9/11. That relation is that the 21st day of Ramadan happened to occur on 9/11 in 2009.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure bruv but I'm saying there's no relation to Imam Ali

The top picture of the shark swimming around was actually done by a friend of mine during Hurricane Sandy.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yea, I was gonna say, after Sandy I remember that picture popped up. I only know that because my aunt and uncle live in OC, NJ

#8 One of my bank code is 1001, no joke here. If that was true, bank would rage at me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found these unsatisfying

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not so sure the Filipino one is a hoax... source: I married one and he'd play in a flood.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it's shopped since the reflections in the water have the top of tbe counter despite being faced away from the water

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not to mention what happens to a running computer when submerged, since none are visible above the water line.

#3 are they questing in durotar?

10 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 1

I did not understand the comment until I checked the picture, then it made me laugh.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you may be right.

Given the flood in the picture isn't real, what's to say that's actually even the Philippines?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit that's a good observation.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The truth of #10 is even more badass than the hoax.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Glad the ATM one is a hoax. My PIN is the same forwards as it is backwards. I'd have the cops called on my every time.

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Nah Bro, only when you put it in backwards, like 4334 instead of 4334, see?...

A lot

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Everything is going as planned.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But what will come of all this? :O

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ALMOST no connection to September 11 you say??? The plot thickens.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, some of the shark photos are edited, but there were actually sharks swimming around the streets during the 2011 Brisbane floods.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because: 'STRAYA!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Woo! #1 I grew up there

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grew up on Vashon also. So did my wife. Don Puz is my father in-law

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually saw the first one! Super cool! Sadly people kept taking parts of the bike and its barely distinguishable

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I thought it was well-established that someone just attached the two halves of the bike to the tree recently to make it look like that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

#1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a problem, have you seen theses signs people carve in to the trees? Yes, when trees are growing they get bigger, but 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If something is at a certain height, it remains at that height, that is why tgere are no signs in t meters heigh

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The Miss Peregrine books are awesome. Read them.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

And the author says he found all of those pictures in other people's collections. If they are manipulated, not by him.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the last one was difficult to finish, but the first two are amazing

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed.
