Not gonna work, tried the same thing and wired it a bunch of different ways. You need neutral.

looks like they are using the white as the "load wire" which means you dont have a neutral and are going to have to run a new 3-wire cable

Get a GFCI outlet if you need a grounded outlet there.

Its a single pole switch you took out, a smart switch wont work

Based on the diagram, white and red go to white in wall, black to black, green to grounding lug in box. Not sure it will work.
