Can you identify this snake? Furthermore, what its likely cause of death?

I found a snake in my backyard today I don't know what killed it can anybody tell from the photo?

looks like a grass snake. It's harmless and has beautiful eyes. Looks like it died from that wound on its side, maybe done by a bird of prey

I would guess trauma maybe a car or another vehicle(bicycle?) That wound is kinda small for a car but a predator would have eaten part of it

When I found it and turned it, it was limp and only recoiled slightly, so it had to be many hours since it expired.

I couldn't say but recent cold snap? Ate a poisoned rodent? Ppl don't realize rat poison harms more than just the rat that eats it.
