I’ve been drinking constantly since I was divorced five years ago. It’s me physically but the mental part is the worst. I broke down crying and told her I wanted to stop. So here is to day one, on NYE no less. One day at a time to get my life back together. So many posts I’ve seen on here of others doing it makes me realize I can do it too. Just have to try, which I HONESTLY haven’t yet. So here is to no more booze.

FP Edit: WOW. Second time. Thanks all. Hope you all have/had a safe and happy NYE. Send bobs and recipes and pictures of rockets and shit blowing up.

I just took a look at my past reading this! Five years sober from the hard stuff cuz of her

Love yourself more than anyone will. Once I learned I was just punishing the guilt, hate and anger I hold. Not drinking became easier.

part of addiction is to distract ourselves from dealing with RL issues. getting clean doesn't give us those tools, we still have to 1/

learn them. Glad you are finding your feet. Best wishes. 2/2

And remember that it's human to have moments of weakness. Don't beat yourself up if you slip up. Just resolve to do better from then on.

Good on you for making this decision, and posting this!

Eyyy, I quit smoking today too, because I'm tired of the stinky reliance on it. Cheers to a healthier struggle through 2020, m8

Whether you choose 12 step recovery or whatever other support system or not can be the difference in sustained change or relapse. Good luck!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Today was my year anniversary of sobriety. You can do it. One day at a time

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's okay, I didn't drink either tonight. We all toasted with sparkling grape juice. Didn't feel like we were missing out at all. I...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Believe in you being able to quit. Best of good will to you. Happy beginning to a new year. Happy New Year!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey bud, if you're physically dependent on alcohol, you cannot go cold turkey. You have to go in patient so they can detox you using

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

medications to prevent seizures and brain damage. If you get the shakes when you haven't had a drink in a few hours/upon waking, you'll

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

definitely need detox. Please talk to your wife if this is the case. Good luck and happy new year.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks mate. I don’t have shakes etc.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Great news! Keep up your good work.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Discard all the booze in your house. Visitors and guests should not expect to be served booze.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you want someone in a similar boat to talk to, reach out to me. [1/3]

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd love someone else to talk to. Ive been up and down on this issue trying to maintain... so I have a little bit of scar tissue. [2/3]

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am sober now and would love another fellow Imgurian to talk to. [3/3]

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks mate. Not a bad idea. Message me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish you the best of luck. I have been drinking daily for 3 years and finally cut back. I plan on talking to my wife about it this weekend

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good! Just be open and honest. Best wishes.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AA bro. You need to learn how this thing works. You’ve already taken the most important step. Good luck. A new, better life awaits.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It get easier day by day and you’ll be a better person on the other side.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s the plan!!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Would strongly suggest medical supervision and/or counseling.it can get harder than you think ßometimes but is worth it.stay strong..

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Go to your doctor asap before quitting. Depending on how much you drank you may need medical intervention. Best of luck and congrats!

6 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 3

No he hasn’t the booze isn’t out of his system. There are people on imgur who succeed but 5000 who don’t. Come back after one month and tell

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Was not a HEAVY drinker just constant. I think I’ll be ok. Thank you!!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You'll be more than OK. If you can get a wife while having a bad habit, you're way ahead of the game.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Day One for me too brother

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FUCK YEA! Day two in the books for me! Keep it going.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hear hear! I’m drinking sparkling water with lime during cocktail hour. Refreshing,

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I made the decision today too. Took my ass straight home to drink water and watch t.v. Start the new year without a hangover wooo

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Congratulations. My wife gave me ultimatum. The drink or the family. My pick. Like you drink was a nightly companion for countless years.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm on day two. Don't stop! If you can do it, I can do it. #nopressure

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In addition to all the gooddm advice u are getting, find something to donduring your free time. Gym, bike, jiujitsu, dance classes, whatevr

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Be careful, going cold turkey can be seriously dangerous. My mom tried and went into seizures. Might consider tapering off, slowly.

6 years ago | Likes 120 Dislikes 2

@op one beer a day?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing happened to me this week. Was in the hospital for three days

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

@OP Talk to your doctor. You can talk to them confidentially. They can be a massive help, and can direct you to other support networks.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This. Alcohol is one of the few drugs which the withdrawal from it can actually kill you.

6 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

And yet Marijuana is still Federally Illegal and Alcohol isn't. Wtf?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Alcohol kills more than all other drugs combined.

this. im waiting on rehab. 5 years daily hard liqour. i get DT after 3 hours, seizures and hallucinations days of no sleep/eat.

“the shakes”

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So why not just switch to beer all day, and then slowly reduce the number of beers? My uncle did exactly that.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i was able to do that before, but now i need so much the carbonation of beer caused my gastro system to get torn up

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd recommend changing to a limit of one beer an hour all day and just deal with the head and muscle aches as your body gets used to it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can also take an aspirin or sonething every 4th hour to deal with the pain.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You need so much? So in other words, instead of using beer to reduce you went the opposite way.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also fills you up more cause youre just consuming liquid so you have even less an appetite

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

withdrawal, even drastic reduced intake, can easily kill you

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's scary. I hope you get the help you need and deserve!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

thank you

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ironic, isn't it. I hope someone can help soon. Then help figure out what pain the booze was numbing. Coping is the hard part. Best wishes.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

thank you

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I *really* depends on the amount they've been drinking. People can drink daily and never have any withdrawal symptoms after quitting.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That’s the thing, I drank daily but not excessively. Don’t have to worry about DTs just shitty feelings for a week or so. Thanks though!!

6 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

It's the psychological withdrawal that's going to be tough. It's been a crutch for many years. Easier than quitting smoking, though.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I am like you, I quit for 4 months last year, it was easy to quit. I hope you are as lucky as me! Good luck. Your liver will regenerate too

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

assuming he drinks enough to get DT's and is a real alcoholic, then he needs medical detox, tapering off almost never works.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I tapered off. It took a month, but I did it. Started with a 36 pack, 1 1/2 per hour, down to 1 beer the last 5 days.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

this. i tried several times. it does not work. waiting on rehab right now with parents "helping me" by giving me only 8 oz of liqour a day

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

theyre wondering why im still not sleeping or eating for days and shaking.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

are you mixing it? I'd recommend mixing it and drinking 1/2 every 8 hours. They should throw in a few beers for when it gets bad.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

by drinking 1/2, I mean like sip through 1/2 of it for 8 hours. Don't chug it. It'd be back to square 1 at that point.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Wow, thought that was SSRI withdrawal that did that. Didn't know alcohol did that too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

SSRI withdrawal feels horrible, but won’t kill you, at least according to a doctor I had. Had it when I missed a dose of Effexor. No more.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol yeah all these "extended release" or things that supposedly stay in your system for days. Apparently I metabolize things, if I miss 1/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

a dose I'd get *fucked* up. Btw for those that worry: you aren't "addicted" to your non-narcotic meds, your body is just surprised when 2/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it doesn't get them because it expects them. So it acts up. It's not the same as addiction. Doctors will help you taper off. My docs have 1/

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yup and benzo withdrawal

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty much any prescription they sold on the street since the 1960s has that problem. My doc blithely threw me on daily lorazepam, when 1/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found out it was (genuinely) addictive I refused to take it regularly. I have enough problems rn. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lorazepam helped me a lot. my script was very specific (x pills now, etc). I followed and was back in shape within a few days.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've been hospitalized 4 times trying to quit cold turkey. Call a hotline and they will set you up with a place to be seen and go to detox.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've been hospitalized a few times myself, but it generally was to get my fluids/electrolytes in order and they shipped me off with a Rx.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I wish that were my case (had DT each time) So glad it was for you though and hope you're doing good now

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never had DTs. I went through a period where I wasn't drunk for over 3 months. I dunno if it's genetic or what. I did have major wd.
