This is so out-of-touch with reality that I'm pretty sure it's in a completely DIFFERENT one.
GrumpyOldMan55
Excellent with money? $250 dining out? What the hell kind of donations are you making that add up to $615? Try again.
ponchoreborn
The Human Fund thanks this person.
FallingStar7669
I'm fat and spend about $400 a month on food... and I don't even dine out. So yeah, I'm calling shenanigans.
dmoore182
It's child support to their bastard child that they don't want anyone to know about.
catsandcoke
And no savings. A person that is excellent with money would be putting that$615 into a Roth IRA.
parasztarcal
Donating to camgirls
mdzmdz
HunterTTP
I’m 25 making 6 figures, this chart is silly as rent is $2000+ for any city where this salary would come. Also, $600 in donations a month?
Telesterionn
You a programmer? Do I see programmer squad up in there?
I’m in IT, not a programmer.
Yeahh ?
DonutOlympian
Internet $20? House cleaner $30?
thoushaltnotpass
They've probably cherry-picked averages instead of medians where it was convenient. House cleaner can cost $30 when only 1/10 ppl have one
KaoruVanity
Split 5 ways.

What is that from
The Wall Street Journal, from 2014, I think. Right around Occupy this came out showing how out of date they are
snowgloom
Where can I get internet for $20 that isn't from the 90's?
hobojones85
So no savings or investments? No entertainment budget? No idea how transport is that low. You need to buy a car and pay for gas n insur..
loma45
That's not their whole budget. I'd say it's 50-60% of their disposable income accounted for here
pawdraig
Mta card in NY is $127. Can get a room in an apartment for that much, shared Internet could be that much, my phone bill is $50 1/
my terrible health insurance is $190. But no entertainment money is crazy, I spend over $250 a weekend easily.
MoonMoon89
Now, show us the budget of someone working two minimum wage jobs ($5.15 x 80 x 52 = $21k a year) and paying their own health insurance...
rnj454
FYI, minimum wage is $7.25, but your point still stands as the number won't change much.
DownvotesPls
I mean $2 more is significant, extra 4k a year before taxes. That's a 40% raise from the number the other user quoted
https://www.ncsl.org/research/labor-and-employment/state-minimum-wage-chart.aspx I live in Georgia or Wyoming, won't say which...
Randamnthoughts2
The federal minimum wage is $7.25. those states still have to pay the federal minimum wage
swedishpancakeswithlingonberries
I looked it up, The minimum wage in Georgia was $5.15 an hour, as set by state law, 1/2
which means the federal minimum wage of $7.25 is applied across the state with some minor exemptions.2/2
Point taken.

I’d believe a 30+ year old article...
4 roommates seem like a nightmare but hey if you're making 100K...
FistfulOfAssholes
Well that explains the other stupidly, fantastically made up numbers.
AawesomeAardvaark
Not in a city, but besides the $20 internet which of these is crazy?
Rent, cell phone, transportation, house cleaner.
1300 gets a nice 2 bedrm a lot of places, so with one roommate I don't see how any of these numbers are unrealistic. Maybe internet barely
split 5 ways is $150 a month for cleaner. This sounds reasonable. Transportation if he owns his car, yes. Cell yes. Rent yes.
Taxonomyanomaly
This person is seriously underpaying their house cleaner.
barnsandnobel
Yea i couldnt even get a cleaner for less than 50 bucks for a clean. And i would need it at least once a week.
ravenfool
It's just 1-2 hours a month. At least I hope that's where that number came from. *grimace*
That's how it should be. If one can afford to not clean their own house, they can afford to pay a reasonable rate like that. $20 is a joke.
TheBigBoldLlama
These numbers feel so wrong. For example, I make about that much and I spend close to 2k in rent.
SexualChocolates
Yeah $2,300 hundred here. Live in a ridiculous city
Smegmasasurus
Same, just over 100k and my rent is 1200 for a tiny 2 bedroom in a very mediocre neighborhood that's boarder line ghetto a few blocks away

800 split 5 ways. Thats 4k a month rent.
If i rent an apartment for 2k a month i spend 2k. If two people rent an apartment for 2k a month each spends 1k. Am I missing something?
mstrmrvn
Internet for $20?! Try 60-100 for good stuff nowadays.
PubstarHero
Depends on your area. I'm getting 500/500 for $45 after taxes and crap.
rollercostarican
ours was like $45 for 200 but after a year it jumps up to like $65. $120 for 900 down
That's a pretty good deal. I guess I did spring for gigabyte fiber.
I wish we had gig in my area. This is the fastest, but I mean I really can't complain at these speeds.
Its still fast enough for 3 IT workers to work from home.
agent008
Rent $1.8k, Groceris $600, Dining Out + Lunch + Going out $900, Utilities + Cell Phone $300, Gas + insurance + misc $700 = $4k/month
wangtangle
There we go.
$100k/year = $76k after Fed Taxes
imtheworst
Real long shot here but are you agent 8 on splatoon?
Sorry, no
WouldTheRealAlphariusPleaseStandUp
The most glaring problem to me is the lack of Student Loan Payments...
Maybe had a scholarship
charlie2979
If they're earning 100k a year at 25 their parents put them through university.
Huh? You realize people can get full scholarships right? And then go get a great job.
They *can* sure. But it's who you know the vast majority of the time.
Hmm hasn’t been my experience
Or they are a programmer and did no such silly bullshit
Maybe.
onecowboytoo
There are not a lot of entry level programming jobs that pay 100k in the Seattle area that I know of. Maybe San Fran
Nah, u can find them. My hubby was getting offers from Seattle and they pay nicely. Depends on what you program.
greatwhynot
Yeah, whoever wrote this is seriously out of touch with reality
SexyNeckbeard
The internet is the only thing that is significantly lower than what I pay in Iowa. But my groceries are under $300, so pretty close

Excellent with money, zero savings or retirement.
robingal1
Haven't been able to save since 07 and because i don't put it in my accounts anymore, I didn't even notice it missing in the pic. good find!
IJustPoopedMyPants
2700 a month does not equal 100k a year, they just left out the savings portion
Seems incredibly arbitrary.
Yeah, 2700 is about half their take home (taxes vary by location)
DustyPigeon
Exactly this is their monthly "spending" not total earnings.
shyasen
A person who is "excellent with money" would include contributions to a 401K/IRA/savings in the monthly spending. "Excellent with money"
would also incorporate federal/state/local taxes in the budget. Noticed that was missing as well from this imagined expenses chart.
etcnotect
This only adds up to 32,400 so there's plenty left for savings and taxes, especially considering the amount of donations they're making
BoneyBaby
20 for internet.... okaaaaayyyyy
MofongoBalls
*Laughs in Comcast*
topdollar38
I mean my internet is only $35 a month total. This person splits the bills with 4 roommates.
Hydravelsen
So where's the other 75k?
rumpleforeskinforthewin
Taxes would have taken a good chunk right off the top so their net is probably in the $60-70k range. But I doubt they are saving the rest.
Yeah, I noticed tax liability wasn't included. A person who is "excellent with money" would calculate tax liability into the budget.
Kenny42
Where is this person getting internet, cell phone and a house cleaner all for under 100
Sigge1981
Fantasyland
JanglesPrime
The only way i see these numbers working is if they are splitting bills with someone.

Yep so most of his big costs are split 4 ways, great if you can make it work, not viable everywhere, not a typical persons break down.
Illegally is the only way
BlueCanaryInTheOutletByTheLightSwitch
Could be a microloft split with a few people.
igiggledtoohard
Google Fi, my wife and I monthly bill is 45 a month but we use almost no data though. Everything else I have no idea where they got those #s
MrPowPow
270 for health insurance. Less than 900 for rent. When was this 1995?
HEALTH INSURANCE $270 F'ING WHAT?!? Sounds like they are getting health insurance through their job because it runs MUCH higher than that.
Catastrophic level insurance in NY is about $200 with Oscar in NY. Have to be under 30 to get it
chrisptaco
with my insurance going through my employer, its STILL higher than $270/mo for me...
neoritter
Of course they're getting it through their job. How are they making 100k otherwise. For me even the most expensive plan is less than 200$.
If you're at a company with good benefits then $270 per month make sense for one person
I have decent benefits. And for no kids/spouse health ins is 91 per month. Add vision/dental/auto and I can hit 270.
malexmatt
$270 per month is on the high side for a young, single person getting it through work. Especially with six figure salary.
purpleparli
I don't quite make six-figures, but mine is over 300 and that's the cheapest one I could get. Through work. I'd love to pay 270.
themobileappisbroken
Anyone earning 100k per year ain't donating $615 per month of it to anyone. I can only assume that's a pseudonym for their drug dealers.
They're donating it to camgirls on their favourite site. Or maybe local strippers.
Mmbear
No no thats donations to the bank... in the form of student loan interest.
They aren’t even saving anything either.
arrbos
Charity is a very nice girl.
Why not? Churches often recommend 10% tithe so I know a few religious folk that do that. I only make 40k and donate around 7%.
ItsBobBelcher
You should donate that much but a 25 year old making that much money is no way the personality type to donate any of it
KeyLimeAnxiety
Based on what? The fact that you’re jealous of this theoretical person and assume they are not generous because of it?
That’s incredibly presumptive of you. The only 25 year olds I know with that kind of money spend it on drugs and travel.
So the few 25 year olds you know are selfish and that means this scenario is unrealistic?
Actually now that I think about it,my friends who donate lots of their time/ money are teachers orwork nonprofit. Thats the personality type
You’re making a blanket statement about all 25 y/o making 100k. That’s presumptive. I am making an assumption based on your actual comments
youwontlikewhateveriwrite
Is this a daily budget? No way internet is only $20.
probablyprobable
It seems to be split 5 ways, as the article someone else posted said he had 4 roommates
FlamingDeathGoat
So someone who makes 6 figures decided to have 4 roommates...LMFAO such completely in touch journalism
And the internet works between all these people? Mine was horribly slow living with just one other person. I had to go to a nearby McDonalds
Depending on where you live, you could have gigabit internet. That can easily split 5 ways.
blueicelt
I have 1 gig internet for $70 a month...
So 4 people making 25k each a year?
One dude who makes 100k and 4 other roommates. It doesn't say if they follow his same budget plan. That's why internet&housekeeping ar cheap
Cryolith
This is as real as that girl who's entire plan for paying off her debt was just to have mom & dad buy her an investment property.

Monthly income of $2800 is not $100k per year.
It's spending only, about half his take home income (it's a profile on a real person, with 4 housemates)
n0n53n53
yeah this them spending is 1/3 of their gross income. Assume the gov't get 1/3 they are also saving $2775 per month. This is fantasy
feedthelynx
This shows monthly expenses, not sure where/if income is shown, aside from the title
CaveCanem
I think the expectation is that this fantasy person also saves and invests a good amount
Right, they save/invest 60% of their income, good logic

FourScoreAndSevenBeersAgo
We all know a 25 year old, making 100k, would most certainly not be in an apartment that costs $850 a month.
Isthe4thtimethecharm
$250 a month for dining out. I spend that on just lunch.
J0765
None of these figures are remotely close to real cost of living
TheIrishBeefcake9000
In Utah, it's nearly impossible to find a decent apartment for $850.
rocklobsteriguess
i’m 26 making almost that much and spend exactly $750/mo. total on rent, utilities, and internet. Not all of us try to live above our means
CanyonRunner
Internet is only 20. That bill is being split at least 3 ways. He has 2 roommates and lives in a converted dining space.

Is that $400 monthly on groceries? Is he alone or paying for a family of 5? Cause holy shit I pay at most $100.

Oh no, it's a house. They have a "house cleaner". So they're renting a whole HOUSE for $850 a month. Ludicrous.

I'm a 30-something year old in SoCal who makes approx $85k per year, and I live in an apartment that costs me $895 per month. We do exist.
I also get free gas from my job, so my transportation costs are just my insurance payment and general maintenance (which I do myself).

$270 for health insurance? Definitely not the US
aDodecahedron
I’m an early 20s healthy male, and my cheapest marketplace health insurance options are ~$240/mo, so this doesn’t seem unreasonable to me

Yeah with $100k job that's legit. I think I would pay that or less if I was on the single plan at my job
thesupersonic
I can’t find a decent apartment for 825. You’d be hard pressed to find a mortgage that low.

$250 for health care??? That was what I payed before Obamacare. Now it is $550. I call bullshit.

CrypticalEnvelopement
&250 a month on dining out and $400 a mo th on groceries LOL
braintortilla
As a 27 year old who makes 121k a year, I spend less than this a month. 400 for groceries is ridiculous, 250 for dining out is also a lot.
PoliteButFactualCanadian
My numbers are around that. So....
supervillainsevilmoustache
You’re Canadian might be the difference? Between public transportation/Uber costs, I don’t know anyone that spends this little on transport,

No family business. Made my own way, but it's tough. Early career was tough. A couple repo'd vehicles, terrible credit due to lots of 1/2

I was gonna say, stinks like Bay Area in these comments.
Yeah I'm paying $1650. I do not look forward to paying $1800 in rent. I think I'd be happier with the cost if it wasn't renting. Burning $$
Im getting out of my rent this weekend finally. Work isn’t making me go back until March now. So I don’t want to be in nyc. Where are you?
Detroit, MI. I do not envy you living in NYC. I hear rent out there is outrageous for a tiny amount of space.

Where is there a livable apartment for $850. A studio starts at $1850 in my town.
ThrowtheHammer13
$270 for health insurance, nope.

Yeah I laughed at this as well.
That's right, he'd be living in a condo or home with an $850 dollar mortgage.
Probably wouldn't be renting either.
Got bad news for you about living in large cities... which most people making that type of money at 25 will be
eromitlab
These are the assholes on House Hunters who are "just starting out" and "only" have $800k.
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
I was just going to say, "excellent with money" "renting"... Pick one.
About 16k a year of my mortgage go towards taxes and interest. Could split a house to rent and save the equity. Renting isn't always bad
Because you're not paying taxes or interest on the house you're renting..........
I'm saying that if I can get my rent below what I pay for taxes and interest I'd be up cash. I can save the 14k equity and put it in the mkt
Some people don't understand that a majority of their payments don't go towards equity and rush to buy something
Endofire
Probably wouldn’t be using $20 internet that’s for sure.
Isatronium
May be splitting it with roommates.
Can you even get $20 internet service anymore?
I get 20mbits for that, my colleague in the city gets a gigabit, and I envy it a hell of a lot.
Aldersberg
Yeah, a 1 Gb fiber connection in my town. But you'd have to live in Eu
It’s also subsidized with tax $$$ so although it is only £20 a month to you directly, you probably pay much more when you factor taxes in.

That makes sense, you live in a developed country.

Im 35 and well over 100k now. When i was about 28 i bought a house for 80k. Mortgage was 750 but dropped to 400 as i payed it off.

Yeah, I don't make 100k a year and my car payment is 450.
lronMaiden
That's part of the problem. Here average car is worth a bit over 3k and almost 13 years old. (Half of them are cheaper & older)
poscduke
Metro?
I'm assuming $100k 25 year old probably lives in a city where you probably don't have a car even if you are somewhat wealthy.
And where rent is 4x that. For a reasonable 2 bed in a nice but not outrageous neighborhood. Transit is about right, though.
ImmaCatImmaSexyCat
That seems reasonable to me. Gas for me would run about $60 per month, and I saved on parking by just using an expired parking pass at work.
$325 /monthly train ticket for me
Actually, the transit and mortgage/rent numbers are very close to mine and I live in Toronto, which is NA's 4th largest city.
Mairoa
I'd say bc Canada is a functioning country where wealth inequality is an issue, but not as up your ass with a cactus as the US
Damn, that's some amazing rent. For NYC the transit cost is about right, the rent is low by a factor of 3 to 4.
I ended up buying my condo in a very low income area and it's become better. Have to make sacrifices to get ahead. I'm only earn 70k CAD
My car is paid off and that's $80 less than what I spend on transportation each month(I have to pay a bridge toll 4 days a week)
haadyy
I read you have to pay a bridge troll... XD
Depends on where they live. NYC you can absolutely do $130 a month for transport, that's an unlimited MetroCard which is all you need.
ChrisBronson
I guess he shares a Manhatten apartment with 5 other people then
Reasonable to assume that a 25 year old makimg 100k/yr already owns his car.
Just as reasonable to assume he/she just bought a new car as well.
And pays no insurance or fuel?
Insurance full coverage with a good record is like $80. If car has good gas mileage and a short commute $40-60 in gas/mo isnt unheard of
Still got to add oil changes, tires, and other basic maintenance issues.
TVNewsIsBadForYou
I pay $100 a month in tolls alone
TheKingRamen
Maybe he lives in the south? I’ve never seen a toll road in my life
We don’t have toll roads either, that’s for the bridge toll.
You gotta pay the troll toll. Everyone knows that
Perhaps he bought his car outright? A car payment is a terrible investment
You could still equate it to a monthly expense. And you still have insurance and tires, and other periodical repairs and maintenance.
peikkos
Depends. My have a low interest rate where it makes sense to borrow. My line of credit is stupid low, make more money to invest in stocks
I think the 24k i spent on my car over 5 years was a solid investment for 15-20 years of reliable transportation. Im 8 uears in and at 43k m
1. Not everyone has 30k for a new car outright 2. if you have good credit and can get a 0% loan, it's perfectly fine. Of course, the entire>
concept of a new car is terrible as an investment, with very few exceptions they instantly depreciate. Buy a decent $5k used every 2 years.
I’ve never bought a new car in my life. And I don’t plan to start anytime soon.
Yeah I largely agree with that. I don’t like monthly payments of any kind though

Silnt39
Nope..he'd have to be in the middle of nowhere Alabama to get rent that cheap...and good luck making 100k there
copingcabana
Not sure how to take that, but in NY where $100K is a good starting salary, you can't get an apartment for anywhere near $825
babycheesehead
It’s probably in NY or a similar city where an apartment costs at least $2k a month
When I moved to Bay Area CA in 2014, I was mad struggling to find anything under $3500/Mon, because 3BR and I have kids.
hipshopbutcanthap

That only exists in one area. Silicone Valley. Thats the only 6 digit poverty area. (afaik)

So ? I live in a nice place downtown and the internet is free but I upgraded to gig and it’s only 20. Just saying
IHateCakeDays
That’s probably some fast 1000/1000. Probable because those donations to cam girls. 5€ gets 50/50 and that gives enough speed

I know guys who were pushing 100k in their late 20s. They rented a big house together so they could save money and still party
I am doing that right now. Saves money all around and you always have people to chat with. Especially with the current environment.
That's what the guy the article linked in the tweet does. He rents with four other roommates.
I did that for 3 years. 5 of us in a house. I was only paying $650 a month

Or that their phone bill@would only cost $40
Or that internet would only cost $20.
AvianFox
Donations are to "friends" who provide gifts that come in the form of various substances that some may consider to be medicine/drugs.
celestedrake
Or just to friends in need...I have friends less financially stable than I who I don’t want to starve...
I agree. Hopefully that is the case. In a perfect world... but i was referring to the potential consumption of drugs listed as "donations."
nossan
You are a good person. I hope your friends appreciate you!
DaBaiMa
Why do so many people donate to political parties in the USA? Is it related to tipping in restaurants? Most other nationalities don’t do it.
They're PAC or charity donations for various issues, rarely to the party itself (there are limits on that).
princessdogface

The insurance is too low too.
My medical/vision/dental only runs about $50 a paycheck, every two weeks

If they’re making 100k his employer probably covers most of their insurance, so that can be accurate. But overall this chart is... yeah lol

Oh i assumed that was life insurance, i forget some places pay health insurance
Premium plans on all of them would run me at most, 150.
*and auto insurance if covered there, $120 a month would more than cover that.
If I got health insurance from my company for my wife and I, it would be over $200 a week.

they donate almost as much as they pay in rent?
Notmybeardedladynotmycarnival
Yea, to the landlord
ulvitron
I call my taxes a donation. Seems proportional to his wage.

20 bucks for internet. HA!
DavidBrooker
I got a six figure job at age 27, and I did give away as much as rent on *one* specific month. But that was, like, 70% showing off. 1/2
The idea that it'd be a monthly expense is insane. 2/2
thefrayedendsofsanity
House cleaner, internet, and transportation are bullshit numbers, too. $20 for internet? $30 for a house cleaner? Okay.
McSkeevely
And don't save any? And what house cleaner is 30$???
HorseMadeofGhosts
If he truly is "excellent" with money, then that donation is a write off, and it'll lower his taxable income........
JudgeVegas
You're still out of pocket.
Solid idea if you can show paperwork for it. Tithing or religious donations can be written off up to a certain amount.
NordicusMaximus
Sigh. You don’t spend frivolous money just to get a friggin discount on your taxes. You’re out more money than tax would ever take.
pizzapartyhard
Yeah, isn’t the idea that you just don’t pay taxes on the money you donated. So ket’s say I make $100K. I donate $10K. I pay income tax on
$90K, but not on the $10K I donated. But that wouldn’t save me money because I’m out that entire $10K, not just the taxes on it.
You get tax breaks for money you HAVE to spend things on. You don’t spend money to get the tax break. “I gotta buy a truck before Dec. 31,
So I can get the tax deduction on a vehicle over 10,000lbs.” Great, you just put down $5K, and have a $600/mo. payment for 7 years, just to
DarkwingDuc
But it's still a net loss. She won't get taxed on that $650 a month, but she's still giving away money, maybe -$400-ish a month after taxes.
CarlosBenjamin
Unless it dumps you into a lower tax bracket, but yeah...
FightingRevengeOfYourMom
Yup. It amazes me that people think 'a writeoff' means you get all your money back. Like the mortgage interest deduction.
Well I did say reduces taxable income. As a sole prop, I live for that, but you're totally right. So many people think it's free money. :/
What you said is accurate. I was just highlighting my pet peeve, when people say, "but, but, but, it's a writeoff."
KPopGirlKimi
Those 'donations' are probably to his sugar baby monthly. That seems more likely.

mikeatike
The chart is like fractal bullshit. The deeper you look, the more bullshit you see.
Spyro4GonnaBeLit
Notice how internet isn't considered a utility hmmmmm..
The old people that came up with this consider internet a luxury.
Let's just focus on the big lie, which is that there is a "typical" 25 year old making 100k. There's like 6 of them.
JackieTreehornProductions
When you work for daddy's company, anything is possible. You can even become President! Here's a $5M starter for your new business son!
That describes a lot of the young successful people I know from back home. Family gifted them a lump sum of $$$ or gave them good jobs.
One kid barely made it through school makes $70k working at a body shop cause you guessed it, daddy made him part owner.
justanotherdoug
And they're all douchebags.
Every single one of them wears their sunglasses upside down on the back of their head when they're indoors.

hirosjimma
Where is savings?
airen
Anything left over its like 5k a month after taxes
yes! i find it funny this 20 something that's excellent with money has no savings. Put those donations in to savings!
ProfessorChaos
Yeah, not saving shit but donating over $600/month? That's not 'good with money'.
Showmeyourface
$2775 is only about half of net pay per month at $100k. I would assume the left over is savings.
nopenopenopenothanks
This. You bring home probably around $2400 biweekly after deductions and hopefully an IRA/ 401k
thisiskissel
More like “donations” to his drug dealer.
To be fair, if I made $100k/yr I would donate a lot of money. I wouldn't know what to do with anything over about $70k.
DrKriegersClone
Congratulations on living somewhere affordable. 100k doesn't even put you in the "can afford a house" bracket in big cities.
lifeofellen
Well after taxes thats about all you'll get anyways so you wouldn't need to donate, you already did, just to the government
At 100k in the US, the effective tax rate is about 22%. That's basically the same as my ETR at 40k.
If you actually get a job making that much, there's a very high chance you'll have to live in a place where rent takes most of it.
DanceKing12
Besides the rent that is usually high, also consider you are likely having to pay student loans as well. They take a big chunk.
I spend my money on Hookers and beer, the rest i squander
plasm04
i used to think this way until i moved to a place where it's 2.4k / mo in rent and taxes are ~30% ; it's crazy how fast 80k disappears.
beneaththeradar
Put it in a 401k or other investment. 100k is not that much money.
I'm maxing out my retirement plan and going on a vacation most years and I make $40k. I don't need another 60k/yr invested.
CorgiGrrrMan
Are you talking net or gross $40k? In the US, max 401k investment is $19,500/year pre-tax, which using gross income, would leave $20.5k
kaarbaakimgr
I don’t think you understand how percentages work
Nod to what your government overlords want: those campaign contributions are important !

Exactly. That “donations” number is a load of horse shit.

$27.83/mo for mine, but internet for $20/mo? On what? Dialup? Does that transportation also include insurance & maintenance? Doubt it.(1/2)

It's one internet, what could it cost? $20?
And <$200/mo for utilities? My power bill alone is that much. add the rest and its double. what city is this in? (2/2)
My electric bill was $85 in July running AC 24/7. Gas was $20, water $18. Garbage is about $5-10. $5 a pick up...
Depends if you roll internet in there or not. They seem to list it separately from everything else though. I would say the utilities and...
$60 for me and the wife. Verizon unlimited but with family too
LSUguy
Damn how!? Same plan but it's $150
Basic unlimited with 4+ lines is $35/line. Being a veteran is $40 off the whole bill boils down to about $30/line
The whole bill for like 7 of us is $210

Where? Even tracfone or Straight Talk are 45/mth? What - are you really talking about your parent's family plan?
Buddy, it says $40/month for cell. $45/month is pretty close. Plus you don’t have to be on a parents family plan to be part of a shared plan

Also, 170 for electricity? Turn off some lights dude. I have a house & only pay close to that in the peak of summer heat.

Alone. They generate less heat and use less electricity. Then everything over to LED lighting. And upgraded central air and ac unit.

Oh that sounds way more complicated than my plan was.
dan144
Software can do it if you work for big tech.
Bingo.
I thought about mentioning that, but if you work for big tech the numbers on that chart are even more ridiculous. Try 3-4k for rent.
It's possible, though big tech is moving toward remote work which means you can live in cheaper places making 100k+.

But for budgeting purposes I agree that it is wildly unrealistic for most.

Note, this was the middle of nowhere, mines and quarries close to anything that matters are closer to $20-25/ hour in my experience.

Nah you're telling me to turn lights off, get a better job, and saying I'm too poor to imagine a good paying job. You're cancer.
I'm not telling you to do anything either. You suggested because you're making 40k that someone else couldn't make 100k.
For someone doing so well in life you also don't seem to understand what a "rhetorical question" is.
Ah nice excuse.
Lol, you're the one that was incredulous about 25 making 100k. Don't put your words in my mouth.
nilaismad
Im incredulous about 25 making 100k. It seems like this is normal to you, but really not for most, comp sci or any field.
Get a better job? No shit? Never thought of that...go fuck yourself. What about the 500+++ for student loan payments from that degree??
Don't take it personally if you can't imagine jobs that'd pay 100k by 25.
....so now I'm too poor to even imagine it? You're something else asshole.
Keep trying crybully. You made the comparisons, funny out Eid in other people's mouths.
I work 50+ hours a week often 6 or 7 days. I'm trying to go to school but a hour commute one way to work doesn't leave much time for it.
Pinyateh
As someone in the field of CS/ECE, you literally just need a degree, doesn’t matter where from. Save your money, get it online
This guy is right though, a prick sure but demand is in for CS/tech and the pay shows. I’ll graduate in ‘22 (MSinCS) and make >100k assured
genomicbeast
Excellent with money in a fantasy world, holy shit some of these numbers are just pulled out of a hat.
YoSamiteSam
This graph is to show that the elites are able to hoard wealth, what ought to be of concern is the house cleaner being paid only $30.
ultrarunningawayfromyou
Pffbbt like I could afford the hat they pulled those numbers out of.
TheYoungerChrisEvans
"House cleaner". Bruh, you mean me?
MankHoody
Only $30 for someone to clean the house?! Yes please!
The rest is saving. What, you cant do that? Are you poor or something? (/s if needed)
Yeah money for donations? Wtf can barely get by with realistic numbers not enough to just donate
Student loan payment? What job pays 100k at 25 without also 200k in student loans or a rich family?
The monthly total isn't atypical (nowhere near take home for 100k tho) but the breakdown is waaaay off.
ThatUsernameHasAlreadyBeenChosenAndlsNoLongerAvailable
I feel like if they are excellent with money and make 100k at 25 there should some savings lol.
justchelsea
If they're making 100k aand spending less than 3k a month, there's plenty for savings.
STINKPICKEL
You spelled 'ass' wrong it's not spelled, h -a- t .
Duskz
Internet for 20.00 lol!!!
Robotok
People need to read. The article says he lives with 4 roomates.
$650+ a month on food is not "excellent with money" roommate or not this person is top 10% and they made an article like he was average.
scaryfeet10
Oh!
theokaychick
Aaaaaallllll of those numbers were pulled out of a hat. Not one of the is reality based. Including the income.
that is the thing that gets me the most. The average US household income is 60k. At 100k single you are at the top 10%
vaultdweller0322
Some of it yea, like in my area of the US I only make 50k a year and I have a niceish house with a monthly payment of $859, I would assume
A 25 year old making 100k a year probably lives somewhere like California and I highly doubt the rent is that cheap there and no one offers
Internet for $20...the 25 year old doesn't even have their own vehicle and no one donates that much a month, not a single 25 year old anyway
I made 50k before the pandemic, I couldn't get a realtor to spit on me for that amount where I live. The cost disparity in the US is absurd
Yea it really is. I live in rural South Carolina and the cost of living is cheaper than most I assume. I have a wife, kid and a house all on
A single income. Now are cars aren't new, but I'm a half ass mechanic that can keep them running
urawizardhary
idk if I am lucky but these numbers line up almost exactly with what my monthly expenses are, and I make 90k. Excluding some items...
My Internet and phone bill is much more expensive, I don't donate but I do spend about the same amount on investing for my 401k
Do you split things 4 ways with roommates? because that's what the guy in the article did. This is very unrealistic to the average.
Nope. My rent is same, utilities is $20 cheaper, phone / Internet are $90 ea. Don't have a cleaner. Car insurance / gas is ~$40/mo
I spend less in health insurance (high deductible) and zero on donations. $400/mo on 401k. I do spend $1500 / mo on student loans
It's still below the average (besides loans). I'm guessing rural area/state? No roommates and 800 rent, probably not close to a major city.
BirthdayBeatsNice
$30 house cleaner
TheRealFairy
Maybe dry cleaning your clothes, maybe household cleaning supplies. No one would or should work for so little in any size space
Not unreasonable if they only come once a month and you split the expense with several roommates.
TimeFoDat
That's the secret, these numbers are based off 4 people sharing a studio apartment. Suddenly it all makes sense.
Firemonsterlols
I live in the bay area, the big ones for me are Phone, Internet and rent. Double or tripple those easy...
I call BS on the groceries + dining out. Spending $650+ on a single person a month for just food you are not "excellent" with money
Haha I diddnt even catch that. Was focusing on where the underestimated only. If you use 650$ a month you are overpaying or wasting food.
DarklordDemise
Haha $40 phone bill hahaha the internet cost lmao.
That rent cost is bs too
I guess this is from a 2 yr old article and he split rent 4 ways, either way some of these numbers are outlandish
EmailFail
ENJOY YOUR $20 INTERNET AND $600 IN DONATIONS
SirOmir
Where i live (EU) i have 200mb net for ~19 dollars/month.
And 300mb mobile with unlimited data, SMS and calls for under 25 dollars/month...
Neato. Here I believe dsl starts around 30 or 40. Most internet is packaged, so it can get expensive solo.
WeeblesWobble
Time to bust out that 56k modem!
keystotheairlock
Absolute nonsense. Maybe in Thailand, or the more remote Philippines but probably not there, either. This is horseshit.
Realeztoremember
$825 for rent?! $130 for transportation?!?! $20 for INTERNET?!?!? I’m 35 and these numbers would be a dream!
pluviofile
Well.... I I'm 24 with a paid off truck from 1989 and a kia I bought cash used and salvage title. I only spend like... 150 after insur/gas.
shinagami091
$900 would get a fairly nice apartment in Texas, I work for an ISP so my internet is free. My car payment is $500 though
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Don't forget $400 a month for all groceries. Apparently when you make 100k you still eat rice and ramen every day.
Are we assuming this person is married with kids or single? Because if single $400 is perfectly reasonable
BannedbyastupidMod
my internet would be at minimum $140 I currently pay $175
sexysexyjesus
I spend $650 rent, $50 transportation, $100 groceries, $120 utilities. $0 on eating out. I was thinking this guy needs to save more money.
youcanreachmenow
Okay I live in a country in Asia where things are known as being shit cheap (excl. Alcohol). Some numbers here would be fantasy even here...
AvocadoHouse
Agreed. Where I live, $1,700 gets you a studio
I guess spending wisely means living with 2 roommates in a 2 bedroom apartment and sharing 1 car.
thatguyintheplacewiththething
Living with two roommates in one car
royoffthegrid
To be fair that’s the cost of a monthly subway pass in nyc, for transport. The rest is ridiculous haha
These might be possible .. in a place where the average 25 year old will be making min wage
Sarnar
I'm paying 1100 EUR in rent for 60 square metres. Outside the city prices drop rapidly. But that internet and transport is just fantasy.
shreveportbossier
They could have meant a mortgage payment? Surely nobody making 100k annually is renting if they can avoid it, right? I mean obviously if 1/
The situation doesn't allow it, like working abroad or traveling a lot for work, but any way you look at it, renting is 2 or 3 times more 2/
Expensive. It's not without it's own perks though. I miss having a landlord who was responsible for everything that broke.
scellers
Depends where. SF: $1600/month for a room in a shared flat. Homes are 1-2 mil+++. 100k doesn't get you anywhere.
And this was 7 years ago, likely worse now.
Most people can't buy their homes outright anyway, and have to take a mortgage loan out to get into it in the first place, paying monthly.
JCBalance
No way they have a mortgage for $825 at 25 years old if they have a local job that pays $100k.
queenofdodos
$825 if splitting rent with someone, maybe
Dominator497
Depends. Where I am in georgia, you can get a full ass apartment for 845 a month. Internet and transportation is BS though.
Depends on where you live. I live in San Antonio TX and $825 would get you a decent 1 bedroom apartment.
GalaxyTheWolf
I mean... The 130 transportation isn't bad, I spend 95$ a month on gas and drive a car that isn't too good on gas
amop
270 for health insurance at 100k/yr??? More like 450 at 35k
$250 on dining out, that include lunches and a nice dinner?
Flyingwigs
To add my wife to my work plan (we're both 34 with no major health issues) would be over $700/month
QuickLighting53
That one isn't outlandish. My healthcare was free at my last job (HDHP. I had to contribute to my HSA myself though)
"I had to contribute to my HSA" Bingo. I'm guessing high deductible plan where most is out of pocket paid by your HSA contributions?
Deductible at $3k spent. Then they cover 90% I cover 10% until max out of pocket of $5k. For the entire family. Not bad at all
Not bad if you're all healthy and no E.R. trips
My health insurance is roughly $300/mo for like, 2k/yr OOP Max and even ER visits are $40. I'm with a very large organization so Im sure >
Thats why I'm able to get such a good plan at low rates.
FaveBoobsandMilfs
Internet for $20 a month... lies.
$610/month in donations????
Lol more like $610 for all the other shot he forgot
Jagerbeast
I wish i was 25 and making 100k
ATerribleArtist
I've got 1 of those 2 things down.
INeverReadTheTOS
HunterTTP
I’m in IT, not a programmer.
Telesterionn
Yeahh ?
DonutOlympian
Internet $20? House cleaner $30?
thoushaltnotpass
They've probably cherry-picked averages instead of medians where it was convenient. House cleaner can cost $30 when only 1/10 ppl have one

Can get a room in an apartment for that much, shared Internet could be that much, my phone bill is $50 1/
pawdraig
my terrible health insurance is $190.
MoonMoon89
https://www.ncsl.org/research/labor-and-employment/state-minimum-wage-chart.aspx I live in Georgia or Wyoming, won't say which...
Randamnthoughts2
The federal minimum wage is $7.25. those states still have to pay the federal minimum wage
swedishpancakeswithlingonberries
I looked it up, The minimum wage in Georgia was $5.15 an hour, as set by state law, 1/2
swedishpancakeswithlingonberries
which means the federal minimum wage of $7.25 is applied across the state with some minor exemptions.2/2
rnj454

4 roommates seem like a nightmare but hey if you're making 100K...
FistfulOfAssholes
Well that explains the other stupidly, fantastically made up numbers.
AawesomeAardvaark
Not in a city, but besides the $20 internet which of these is crazy?
FistfulOfAssholes
Rent, cell phone, transportation, house cleaner.
AawesomeAardvaark
1300 gets a nice 2 bedrm a lot of places, so with one roommate I don't see how any of these numbers are unrealistic. Maybe internet barely
KaoruVanity
split 5 ways is $150 a month for cleaner.
*grimace*
[deleted]
[deleted]
ravenfool
That's how it should be. If one can afford to not clean their own house, they can afford to pay a reasonable rate like that. $20 is a joke.
TheBigBoldLlama
These numbers feel so wrong. For example, I make about that much and I spend close to 2k in rent.
SexualChocolates
Yeah $2,300 hundred here. Live in a ridiculous city

mstrmrvn
Internet for $20?! Try 60-100 for good stuff nowadays.
PubstarHero
Depends on your area. I'm getting 500/500 for $45 after taxes and crap.
rollercostarican
ours was like $45 for 200 but after a year it jumps up to like $65. $120 for 900 down
mstrmrvn
That's a pretty good deal. I guess I did spring for gigabyte fiber.
PubstarHero
I wish we had gig in my area. This is the fastest, but I mean I really can't complain at these speeds.

IJustPoopedMyPants
2700 a month does not equal 100k a year, they just left out the savings portion
Leithreas
Seems incredibly arbitrary.
loma45
Yeah, 2700 is about half their take home (taxes vary by location)
DustyPigeon
Exactly this is their monthly "spending" not total earnings.
shyasen
A person who is "excellent with money" would include contributions to a 401K/IRA/savings in the monthly spending. "Excellent with money"
shyasen
would also incorporate federal/state/local taxes in the budget.
But I doubt they are saving the rest.
shyasen
Yeah, I noticed tax liability wasn't included. A person who is "excellent with money" would calculate tax liability into the budget.
Kenny42

270 for health insurance. Less than 900 for rent. When was this 1995?
MoonMoon89
HEALTH INSURANCE $270 F'ING WHAT?!? Sounds like they are getting health insurance through their job because it runs MUCH higher than that.
pawdraig
Catastrophic level insurance in NY is about $200 with Oscar in NY. Have to be under 30 to get it
chrisptaco
with my insurance going through my employer, its STILL higher than $270/mo for me...
neoritter
Of course they're getting it through their job. How are they making 100k otherwise. For me even the most expensive plan is less than 200$.
Smegmasasurus
If you're at a company with good benefits then $270 per month make sense for one person
KaoruVanity
I have decent benefits. And for no kids/spouse health ins is 91 per month. Add vision/dental/auto and I can hit 270.
malexmatt
$270 per month is on the high side for a young, single person getting it through work. Especially with six figure salary.
purpleparli
I don't quite make six-figures, but mine is over 300 and that's the cheapest one I could get. Through work. I'd love to pay 270.
themobileappisbroken
Anyone earning 100k per year ain't donating $615 per month of it to anyone. I can only assume that's a pseudonym for their drug dealers.
parasztarcal
They're donating it to camgirls on their favourite site. Or maybe local strippers.
Mmbear
No no thats donations to the bank... in the form of student loan interest.
catsandcoke
They aren’t even saving anything either.

Charity is a very nice girl.
AawesomeAardvaark
ItsBobBelcher
That’s incredibly presumptive of you. The only 25 year olds I know with that kind of money spend it on drugs and travel.
AawesomeAardvaark
So the few 25 year olds you know are selfish and that means this scenario is unrealistic?
ItsBobBelcher
Actually now that I think about it,my friends who donate lots of their time/ money are teachers orwork nonprofit. Thats the personality type
KeyLimeAnxiety
You’re making a blanket statement about all 25 y/o making 100k. That’s presumptive. I am making an assumption based on your actual comments
youwontlikewhateveriwrite
Is this a daily budget? No way internet is only $20.

It seems to be split 5 ways, as the article someone else posted said he had 4 roommates
FlamingDeathGoat
So someone who makes 6 figures decided to have 4 roommates...LMFAO such completely in touch journalism
meganical
And the internet works between all these people? Mine was horribly slow living with just one other person. I had to go to a nearby McDonalds
KaoruVanity

yeah this them spending is 1/3 of their gross income. Assume the gov't get 1/3 they are also saving $2775 per month. This is fantasy
feedthelynx
This shows monthly expenses, not sure where/if income is shown, aside from the title

Isthe4thtimethecharm
$250 a month for dining out. I spend that on just lunch.

None of these figures are remotely close to real cost of living

Oh no, it's a house. They have a "house cleaner". So they're renting a whole HOUSE for $850 a month. Ludicrous.
TheStreetForce
Mine cost $1400. When i was 25 and makong $110,000 a year cus I lucked out big time and hired to the railroad when I was 20.
n0n53n53
Or have $0 in student debt
DooksandPooks
Let’s see I’m a 33 year old making $40,000 a year. And I pay have to spend about as much as this imaginary 25 year old millionaire.
Bystandr
SF - "I have $2,750 - rent for my 1bd apartment is $3,000 !"
lilmonkie
Maybe they have a roommate?
noescapes08
I live in a state with a low cost of living double all that shit unless you want to live in the stab stab part of town.
soulman901
I make 77k and I own a house that runs me 1100 a month.
duramater1
Left out saving any money.
steviEa
He’s paying $825 in rent but still needs a house cleaner? $825 is a studio apartment who in the actual f*ck made this graph
malexmatt
Median rent in the country is ~$1000 lol, you would think CNBC would have the presence of mind to use medians/means for things
TheRealR0tb3rt
When I as 25 my house cleaner cost me 220 a month, 30 bucks?

Where’s the piece named ‘coke and bad decisions’
insomniac24x7
This is from 1995?
PotatoThunder
Don't be too sure. I know several dual income engineers that live in a 1000 sqft house.
Dragonstrike911
As a 27 yo, I make 98k a year and spend 700 on rent. I rent a house with a bunch of people. I am fairly frugal though.
skellington01
People who follow F.I.R.E do

I need to know....where on earth is he getting his healthcare

Their Alcohol consumption would have the grocery bill far bigger.

This pie chart is a form of trolling.
davisev5225
I'm a 30-something year old in SoCal who makes approx $85k per year, and I live in an apartment that costs me $895 per month. We do exist.
davisev5225
I also get free gas from my job, so my transportation costs are just my insurance payment and general maintenance (which I do myself).
KeyLimeAnxiety
25 and my rent is $2,200 for a one bedroom
sciencebasedlifeform
$270 for health insurance? Definitely not the US
aDodecahedron
I’m an early 20s healthy male, and my cheapest marketplace health insurance options are ~$240/mo, so this doesn’t seem unreasonable to me
HelpfulCorn
Yeah with $100k job that's legit. I think I would pay that or less if I was on the single plan at my job
thesupersonic
I can’t find a decent apartment for 825. You’d be hard pressed to find a mortgage that low.
TheFatherMind
$250 for health care??? That was what I payed before Obamacare. Now it is $550. I call bullshit.
HelpfulCorn
Insurance only, and this is legit for company provided insurance. Mine is similar.
belligerentrightdoer
I live in an expensive area, I live in a crappy 1 bedroom and pay $2100 rent MONTHLY and I'm getting laid off. Guess I'm moving
thelenlikeafelon
I was offered a teaching job in Orange county and turned it down for half the pay in MI because it was more affordable.

Because it's too much? Too little? I can't tell! My household makes £42k a year pre-tax and our rent is £875
BrainTaffy
I was living in LA making nearly 90k a year with a partner to share expenses and still barely scraping by, rent was over 2k a month.
RandAIFlagg
I'm a li'l older but make close to that and rent for $500/mo so?
TallDarkndHandsy
I'm a 22 year old student in dublin and my share of the apartment costs €900 a month (dublin is crazy expensive and this is normal) and I
TallDarkndHandsy
Make negative money.. what even is the diagram
PballQhead
Luxury aside, a 25 year old making 100k is most likely in someplace like NYC or Silicon Valley where a normal 1-bed is in the 4 figures.
onef8
As a 27 year old who makes $121K a year, I can confirm, these numbers are bullshit. Nothing is this cheap.
Between public transportation/Uber costs, I don’t know anyone that spends this little on transport,
supervillainsevilmoustache
... the food costs are low by about 40%. Health insurance, maybe? It’s a little low. No loan payments, and donations? LOL
CaptainRedHat
What job do you have?
onef8
I'm a DevOps Engineer in the manufacturing industry.
CaptainRedHat
Oh cool! I'm a lead SRE in the healthcare industry.

Oh nice! I could really use some insight into observability. Got any tips? PM me!

No family business. Made my own way, but it's tough. Early career was tough. A couple repo'd vehicles, terrible credit due to lots of 1/2

late payments and defaulting on loans. Student debt is killing me, but I'm getting there. 2/2
DrPhillipMahmoufWifarts
As a 34 year old who makes much less than that, how do I apply for a grant with you?
pareidoliaperson
31 Count me in. Those numbers look like fairy tale stories to me. I'm not making a quarter of that, imagine that.
Virus322
Well looks like we both should have known better and been born into richer families and gone to college.
mymanmaverick
Yup 27 years old, making same $, my rent is 1800 a month
puffcorn237
That's more than my mortgage. Not counting taxes or insurance. But I have to mow the lawn.
PossiblyYourMother
Same here except mines 2250 for a one bedroom shithole. I can't wait to get out of the bay area
poughdrew
I was gonna say, stinks like Bay Area in these comments.
onef8
Yeah I'm paying $1650. I do not look forward to paying $1800 in rent. I think I'd be happier with the cost if it wasn't renting. Burning $$
mymanmaverick
Im getting out of my rent this weekend finally. Work isn’t making me go back until March now. So I don’t want to be in nyc. Where are you?
onef8
Detroit, MI. I do not envy you living in NYC. I hear rent out there is outrageous for a tiny amount of space.
willyjohnfargo
Where is there a livable apartment for $850. A studio starts at $1850 in my town.
ThrowtheHammer13
$270 for health insurance, nope.
Kryxy
Yeah I laughed at this as well.
PoliteButFactualCanadian
That's right, he'd be living in a condo or home with an $850 dollar mortgage.
youwontlikewhateveriwrite
Probably wouldn't be renting either.
omh2
Got bad news for you about living in large cities... which most people making that type of money at 25 will be
eromitlab
These are the assholes on House Hunters who are "just starting out" and "only" have $800k.
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
I was just going to say, "excellent with money" "renting"... Pick one.
puffcorn237
About 16k a year of my mortgage go towards taxes and interest. Could split a house to rent and save the equity. Renting isn't always bad
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
Because you're not paying taxes or interest on the house you're renting..........
puffcorn237
I'm saying that if I can get my rent below what I pay for taxes and interest I'd be up cash. I can save the 14k equity and put it in the mkt
puffcorn237
Some people don't understand that a majority of their payments don't go towards equity and rush to buy something
Endofire
Probably wouldn’t be using $20 internet that’s for sure.
Isatronium
May be splitting it with roommates.
rumpleforeskinforthewin
Can you even get $20 internet service anymore?
parasztarcal
I get 20mbits for that, my colleague in the city gets a gigabit, and I envy it a hell of a lot.
Aldersberg
Yeah, a 1 Gb fiber connection in my town. But you'd have to live in Eu
rumpleforeskinforthewin
It’s also subsidized with tax $$$ so although it is only £20 a month to you directly, you probably pay much more when you factor taxes in.
TweakerTheBarbarian
That makes sense, you live in a developed country.
Ishwish
130k - 1,300$ rent (buying soon :D )
Bmxtucker
Lol there aren’t even apartments for rent around me for less that $900/month
some1username
I used to, but 20 for internet is bullshit, and where I'm at, you don't get a decent cellphone plan for less than 50.
hobojones85
Im 35 and well over 100k now. When i was about 28 i bought a house for 80k. Mortgage was 750 but dropped to 400 as i payed it off.
afroniner
Holy shit where, Midwest?
hobojones85
About an hour nw of chichago. Right after housing bubble bought a dirty looking forclosed house and fixed it up.
Hungrypiemonger
who the fuck lives in an apartment for under $1100/month

people in the mid-west in a town with less that 50k residents
Hungrypiemonger
which jobs in a mid-west town with less than 50k people make over 100k/yr? cus i'll move there posthaste.

Doctors? I only made 25K when I lived there. But the $400 rent was super nice.
UnrustleYerJimmies
25 year old doctors are doing internships and residencies and don't get paid that much.

Utility industry. Go be a lineman anywhere and I'm sure you'll make good money
stinkonamonkey
People who share apartments, and people who don't live in high rent districts.
biscuitsngravybelly
But good luck making that salary anywhere near a low rent district at 25.
Hungrypiemonger
that also make 100k a year? no...doesn't happen.
1Plebian
Well I did with several others.
FireBreathingStockBroker
My mortgage is less than that. For a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom single family home.
Alfadorfox
What part of the country/world do you live in with housing prices like that?
FireBreathingStockBroker
Median housing prices in my area are more than 10% above national averages
FireBreathingStockBroker
That includes all taxes and insurance
poughdrew
Congrats.
UrbanSatyr
...and thousands of dollars down payment.
FireBreathingStockBroker
I put down very little overall. But yes, the down payment was technically "thousands"
PotatoTier
Yeah I'd have a house by now.
spacecowboyein
They also forgot the student loan payments...
SmallMarbleDancer
Nah man, 6 years in the military then work an industrial job. Can earn $100k+/year with no student debt.
DooksandPooks
HOUSE CLEANER, eating out, wtf world is this.
cleverlydisguised
That's the "donations" category
yoshtan4
That is exactly what I was going to say, going to an American college was probably the biggest mistake of my life.
UltimatelyWarrious
Yip!!
MrRandom314159
I'm making decent, and my rent is like 1.1K for a one bedroom that's not infested with cockroaches.
CptRobotNinja
These numbers are absolute lunacy
rumpleforeskinforthewin
And only spending $130 a month on transportation. My car payment alone is more than that.
biscuitsngravybelly
Yeah, I don't make 100k a year and my car payment is 450.
lronMaiden
That's part of the problem. Here average car is worth a bit over 3k and almost 13 years old. (Half of them are cheaper & older)
poscduke
Metro?
thelenlikeafelon
I'm assuming $100k 25 year old probably lives in a city where you probably don't have a car even if you are somewhat wealthy.
PballQhead
And where rent is 4x that. For a reasonable 2 bed in a nice but not outrageous neighborhood. Transit is about right, though.
ImmaCatImmaSexyCat
That seems reasonable to me. Gas for me would run about $60 per month, and I saved on parking by just using an expired parking pass at work.
Hungrypiemonger
$325 /monthly train ticket for me
PoliteButFactualCanadian
Actually, the transit and mortgage/rent numbers are very close to mine and I live in Toronto, which is NA's 4th largest city.
Mairoa
I'd say bc Canada is a functioning country where wealth inequality is an issue, but not as up your ass with a cactus as the US
PballQhead
Damn, that's some amazing rent. For NYC the transit cost is about right, the rent is low by a factor of 3 to 4.
PoliteButFactualCanadian
I ended up buying my condo in a very low income area and it's become better. Have to make sacrifices to get ahead. I'm only earn 70k CAD
belligerentrightdoer
My car is paid off and that's $80 less than what I spend on transportation each month(I have to pay a bridge toll 4 days a week)
haadyy
I read you have to pay a bridge troll... XD
PballQhead
Depends on where they live. NYC you can absolutely do $130 a month for transport, that's an unlimited MetroCard which is all you need.
ChrisBronson
I guess he shares a Manhatten apartment with 5 other people then
PorneliusHubertII
Reasonable to assume that a 25 year old makimg 100k/yr already owns his car.
rumpleforeskinforthewin
Just as reasonable to assume he/she just bought a new car as well.
Mairoa
And pays no insurance or fuel?
PorneliusHubertII
Insurance full coverage with a good record is like $80. If car has good gas mileage and a short commute $40-60 in gas/mo isnt unheard of
rumpleforeskinforthewin
Still got to add oil changes, tires, and other basic maintenance issues.
TVNewsIsBadForYou
I pay $100 a month in tolls alone
TheKingRamen
Maybe he lives in the south? I’ve never seen a toll road in my life
TVNewsIsBadForYou
We don’t have toll roads either, that’s for the bridge toll.
TheKingRamen
You gotta pay the troll toll. Everyone knows that
TheKingRamen
Perhaps he bought his car outright? A car payment is a terrible investment
rumpleforeskinforthewin
You could still equate it to a monthly expense. And you still have insurance and tires, and other periodical repairs and maintenance.
peikkos
Depends. My have a low interest rate where it makes sense to borrow. My line of credit is stupid low, make more money to invest in stocks
PorneliusHubertII
I think the 24k i spent on my car over 5 years was a solid investment for 15-20 years of reliable transportation. Im 8 uears in and at 43k m
PballQhead
1. Not everyone has 30k for a new car outright 2. if you have good credit and can get a 0% loan, it's perfectly fine. Of course, the entire>

concept of a new car is terrible as an investment, with very few exceptions they instantly depreciate. Buy a decent $5k used every 2 years.
TheKingRamen
I’ve never bought a new car in my life. And I don’t plan to start anytime soon.
TheKingRamen
Yeah I largely agree with that. I don’t like monthly payments of any kind though

Silnt39
Nope..he'd have to be in the middle of nowhere Alabama to get rent that cheap...and good luck making 100k there
copingcabana
Not sure how to take that, but in NY where $100K is a good starting salary, you can't get an apartment for anywhere near $825
babycheesehead
It’s probably in NY or a similar city where an apartment costs at least $2k a month
poughdrew
When I moved to Bay Area CA in 2014, I was mad struggling to find anything under $3500/Mon, because 3BR and I have kids.

Why do so many people donate to political parties in the USA? Is it related to tipping in restaurants? Most other nationalities don’t do it.

HorseMadeofGhosts
Solid idea if you can show paperwork for it. Tithing or religious donations can be written off up to a certain amount.
NordicusMaximus
Sigh. You don’t spend frivolous money just to get a friggin discount on your taxes. You’re out more money than tax would ever take.
pizzapartyhard
Yeah, isn’t the idea that you just don’t pay taxes on the money you donated. So ket’s say I make $100K. I donate $10K. I pay income tax on
pizzapartyhard
$90K, but not on the $10K I donated. But that wouldn’t save me money because I’m out that entire $10K, not just the taxes on it.
NordicusMaximus
You get tax breaks for money you HAVE to spend things on. You don’t spend money to get the tax break. “I gotta buy a truck before Dec. 31,
NordicusMaximus
So I can get the tax deduction on a vehicle over 10,000lbs.” Great, you just put down $5K, and have a $600/mo. payment for 7 years, just to

HorseMadeofGhosts
Well I did say reduces taxable income. As a sole prop, I live for that, but you're totally right. So many people think it's free money. :/
FightingRevengeOfYourMom
What you said is accurate. I was just highlighting my pet peeve, when people say, "but, but, but, it's a writeoff."

A fucking house cleaner, for $30 a month but donate over $600 a month, that's $7200 a year. Hell of a tax write off.
mikeatike
The chart is like fractal bullshit. The deeper you look, the more bullshit you see.
Spyro4GonnaBeLit
Notice how internet isn't considered a utility hmmmmm..
mikeatike
The old people that came up with this consider internet a luxury.

Real guy, with 4 housemates: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/20/budget-breakdown-of-a-25-year-old-who-makes-100000-dollars-a-year.html
Ninjainslippers
Let's just focus on the big lie, which is that there is a "typical" 25 year old making 100k. There's like 6 of them.
JackieTreehornProductions
When you work for daddy's company, anything is possible. You can even become President! Here's a $5M starter for your new business son!
rumpleforeskinforthewin
That describes a lot of the young successful people I know from back home. Family gifted them a lump sum of $$$ or gave them good jobs.
rumpleforeskinforthewin
One kid barely made it through school makes $70k working at a body shop cause you guessed it, daddy made him part owner.
justanotherdoug
And they're all douchebags.
Ninjainslippers

Cell: $70, Internet: $100, Rent: $1,500, House Cleaner $150, Transport: $300. As a start for more realistic numbers.
hirosjimma
Where is savings?
airen
Anything left over its like 5k a month after taxes
echo1echo
yes! i find it funny this 20 something that's excellent with money has no savings.
Ninjainslippers
To be fair, if I made $100k/yr I would donate a lot of money. I wouldn't know what to do with anything over about $70k.
DrKriegersClone
Congratulations on living somewhere affordable. 100k doesn't even put you in the "can afford a house" bracket in big cities.
lifeofellen
Well after taxes thats about all you'll get anyways so you wouldn't need to donate, you already did, just to the government
Ninjainslippers
At 100k in the US, the effective tax rate is about 22%. That's basically the same as my ETR at 40k.
ProfessorChaos
If you actually get a job making that much, there's a very high chance you'll have to live in a place where rent takes most of it.
DanceKing12
Besides the rent that is usually high, also consider you are likely having to pay student loans as well. They take a big chunk.
echo1echo
I spend my money on Hookers and beer, the rest i squander
plasm04
i used to think this way until i moved to a place where it's 2.4k / mo in rent and taxes are ~30% ; it's crazy how fast 80k disappears.
beneaththeradar
Put it in a 401k or other investment. 100k is not that much money.
Ninjainslippers
I'm maxing out my retirement plan and going on a vacation most years and I make $40k. I don't need another 60k/yr invested.
CorgiGrrrMan
Are you talking net or gross $40k? In the US, max 401k investment is $19,500/year pre-tax, which using gross income, would leave $20.5k
kaarbaakimgr
I don’t think you understand how percentages work
Bystandr
Nod to what your government overlords want: those campaign contributions are important !
cfbshank36
Exactly. That “donations” number is a load of horse shit.

Nope. Not even likely on the coasts.

MBA grads from lbs walk into £100k jobs on average. Their average age is 30 plus though

I mean my brother is 25 with an MBA and started 130k doing private equity in NYC. So I guess its possible on the coast.
Whalegod
I'm turning 25 and I was making $60k, granted 14hr days and 100's of hours of overtime. $875 was the cheapest place I could find in my area.

Whalegod
Is laughable.

Also, 170 for electricity? Turn off some lights dude. I have a house & only pay close to that in the peak of summer heat.
CthuluIsMyHomie
Air conditioning an 1800 sq ft house in Vegas had my summer bill in the $150/month range
thevortexmaster
I pay around 200 every 2 months for a large enough house that's summer though. Probably go up in the winter
Digitalblade
Fuck mine averages 320 (FL), over 400 peak summer, 110 water

Being it is so high, can you have the utility come out and do a meter assessment? Maybe they are overcharging based upon past calculations.
paulsname
Electric here is $180 5 ppl one house. Indiana. Changing everything to be more effecient it was almost $300. Tv upgrades lowered it $30 alon
paulsname
Alone. They generate less heat and use less electricity. Then everything over to LED lighting. And upgraded central air and ac unit.
paulsname
To save about $120 a month it cost almost 10,000 up front. Still going to have a company come and redo all the insulation(another 10k or so)
NotNotDeadpool
I'm 29 making 85. It's not impossible.
hellodeliciousfriend
It's pretty unlikely at 25. You can get there faster than people think, but not that fast.
NotNotDeadpool
Yup, and i'd say the ones that do usually burn out not long after.
omh2
Step 1: go to college for Engineering or CS Step 2: live in a high COL city Step 3: get a job out of school Step 4: Cry because you're broke
NotNotDeadpool
Oh that sounds way more complicated than my plan was.
dan144
Software can do it if you work for big tech.
NotNotDeadpool
Bingo.
hellodeliciousfriend
I thought about mentioning that, but if you work for big tech the numbers on that chart are even more ridiculous. Try 3-4k for rent.

It's possible, though big tech is moving toward remote work which means you can live in cheaper places making 100k+.
ellispickle
At 24 I was making 88k but it’s definitely not common or normal, and it sucks because I feel like I’m just getting by

Somehow I manage to pay $20 for internet. I have a couple of intro promos that reduce my bill by from $45 to $20 and every time the promos..
OldEricCool
...are supposed to end I call Comcast and tell them I'll be switching providers if they don't keep the promotion going.Worked 2 yrs in a row
OldEricCool
But for budgeting purposes I agree that it is wildly unrealistic for most.
thesavagery
Get into mining. 18 year olds outta high school start making 75k. By the time you’re 25 and if you’re not an idiot, you’ll make 150k.
lilmonkie
Mining... For data or gold?
thesavagery
Well, both. I currently mine more data now to find more gold tomorrow.

Who downvotes this? And why?
MrSaturday
Soon, both.

Also by 27 suffer from black lung, retire by 35 due to the work and die in your 60s from black lung.
ulftpts
Most large scale mines use haul trucks. Driving one at a mine I used work at paid $35 / hour. Those operators could break $100k on overtime.
ulftpts
Note, this was the middle of nowhere, mines and quarries close to anything that matters are closer to $20-25/ hour in my experience.
thesavagery
Don’t do coal. Gold mining we monitor air, have annual fit tests and quarterly biologicals.
neoritter
Get a better job? Someone with a comp sci degree can expect this depending on sector and location by 25 easy. Pharmacists, various engineers
lilmonkie
This is my obligatory "please do not pursue pharmacy right now" post
ZEER0H
I have a comp sci degree and make 53k at 23. Don't think it will double in the next 2 years.
ZEER0H
Highest I've seen for that experience range, assuming starting work at 22, is around 70-80k.
neoritter
Update, you all seem to be confusing me correcting one portion of a comment with thinking the whole graph is correct. You're wrong.
dcchillin46
Nah you're telling me to turn lights off, get a better job, and saying I'm too poor to imagine a good paying job. You're cancer.
neoritter
I'm not telling you to do anything either. You suggested because you're making 40k that someone else couldn't make 100k.
dcchillin46
For someone doing so well in life you also don't seem to understand what a "rhetorical question" is.
neoritter
Ah nice excuse.
neoritter
Lol, you're the one that was incredulous about 25 making 100k. Don't put your words in my mouth.
nilaismad
Im incredulous about 25 making 100k. It seems like this is normal to you, but really not for most, comp sci or any field.
dcchillin46
Get a better job? No shit? Never thought of that...go fuck yourself. What about the 500+++ for student loan payments from that degree??
neoritter
Don't take it personally if you can't imagine jobs that'd pay 100k by 25.
dcchillin46
....so now I'm too poor to even imagine it? You're something else asshole.
neoritter
Keep trying crybully. You made the comparisons, funny out Eid in other people's mouths.

Pinyateh
Yes please!
LooseyGooseyBrett
Monthly income of $2800 is not $100k per year.
PubstarHero
The rest is saving. What, you cant do that? Are you poor or something? (/s if needed)
LSUguy
Yeah money for donations? Wtf can barely get by with realistic numbers not enough to just donate
noescapes08
Student loan payment? What job pays 100k at 25 without also 200k in student loans or a rich family?
lesliebugs
The article says he lives with 4 roomates.
genomicbeast
$650+ a month on food is not "excellent with money" roommate or not this person is top 10% and they made an article like he was average.
scaryfeet10
Oh!
theokaychick
Aaaaaallllll of those numbers were pulled out of a hat. Not one of the is reality based. Including the income.
genomicbeast
that is the thing that gets me the most. The average US household income is 60k. At 100k single you are at the top 10%
vaultdweller0322
Some of it yea, like in my area of the US I only make 50k a year and I have a niceish house with a monthly payment of $859, I would assume
vaultdweller0322
A 25 year old making 100k a year probably lives somewhere like California and I highly doubt the rent is that cheap there and no one offers
vaultdweller0322
Internet for $20...the 25 year old doesn't even have their own vehicle and no one donates that much a month, not a single 25 year old anyway
genomicbeast
I made 50k before the pandemic, I couldn't get a realtor to spit on me for that amount where I live. The cost disparity in the US is absurd
vaultdweller0322
Yea it really is. I live in rural South Carolina and the cost of living is cheaper than most I assume. I have a wife, kid and a house all on
vaultdweller0322
A single income. Now are cars aren't new, but I'm a half ass mechanic that can keep them running
urawizardhary
idk if I am lucky but these numbers line up almost exactly with what my monthly expenses are, and I make 90k. Excluding some items...
urawizardhary
My Internet and phone bill is much more expensive, I don't donate but I do spend about the same amount on investing for my 401k
genomicbeast
Do you split things 4 ways with roommates? because that's what the guy in the article did. This is very unrealistic to the average.
urawizardhary
Nope. My rent is same, utilities is $20 cheaper, phone / Internet are $90 ea. Don't have a cleaner. Car insurance / gas is ~$40/mo
urawizardhary
I spend less in health insurance (high deductible) and zero on donations. $400/mo on 401k. I do spend $1500 / mo on student loans
genomicbeast
It's still below the average (besides loans). I'm guessing rural area/state? No roommates and 800 rent, probably not close to a major city.
BirthdayBeatsNice
$30 house cleaner
TheRealFairy
Maybe dry cleaning your clothes, maybe household cleaning supplies. No one would or should work for so little in any size space
justchelsea
Not unreasonable if they only come once a month and you split the expense with several roommates.
TimeFoDat
That's the secret, these numbers are based off 4 people sharing a studio apartment. Suddenly it all makes sense.
Firemonsterlols
I live in the bay area, the big ones for me are Phone, Internet and rent. Double or tripple those easy...
genomicbeast
I call BS on the groceries + dining out. Spending $650+ on a single person a month for just food you are not "excellent" with money
Firemonsterlols
Haha I diddnt even catch that. Was focusing on where the underestimated only. If you use 650$ a month you are overpaying or wasting food.
DarklordDemise
Haha $40 phone bill hahaha the internet cost lmao.
DarklordDemise
That rent cost is bs too
genomicbeast
I guess this is from a 2 yr old article and he split rent 4 ways, either way some of these numbers are outlandish

Neato. Here I believe dsl starts around 30 or 40. Most internet is packaged, so it can get expensive solo.
WeeblesWobble
Time to bust out that 56k modem!
keystotheairlock
Absolute nonsense. Maybe in Thailand, or the more remote Philippines but probably not there, either. This is horseshit.
Realeztoremember
$825 for rent?! $130 for transportation?!?! $20 for INTERNET?!?!? I’m 35 and these numbers would be a dream!
pluviofile
Well.... I I'm 24 with a paid off truck from 1989 and a kia I bought cash used and salvage title. I only spend like... 150 after insur/gas.
shinagami091
$900 would get a fairly nice apartment in Texas, I work for an ISP so my internet is free. My car payment is $500 though
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
Don't forget $400 a month for all groceries. Apparently when you make 100k you still eat rice and ramen every day.
shinagami091
WeeblesWobble
I guess spending wisely means living with 2 roommates in a 2 bedroom apartment and sharing 1 car.
thatguyintheplacewiththething
Living with two roommates in one car
royoffthegrid
To be fair that’s the cost of a monthly subway pass in nyc, for transport. The rest is ridiculous haha
n0n53n53
These might be possible .. in a place where the average 25 year old will be making min wage
Sarnar
I'm paying 1100 EUR in rent for 60 square metres. Outside the city prices drop rapidly. But that internet and transport is just fantasy.
shreveportbossier
They could have meant a mortgage payment? Surely nobody making 100k annually is renting if they can avoid it, right? I mean obviously if 1/
shreveportbossier
The situation doesn't allow it, like working abroad or traveling a lot for work, but any way you look at it, renting is 2 or 3 times more 2/
shreveportbossier
Expensive. It's not without it's own perks though. I miss having a landlord who was responsible for everything that broke.
scellers
Depends where. SF: $1600/month for a room in a shared flat. Homes are 1-2 mil+++. 100k doesn't get you anywhere.
scellers
And this was 7 years ago, likely worse now.
shreveportbossier
Most people can't buy their homes outright anyway, and have to take a mortgage loan out to get into it in the first place, paying monthly.
JCBalance
No way they have a mortgage for $825 at 25 years old if they have a local job that pays $100k.
queenofdodos
$825 if splitting rent with someone, maybe
Dominator497
Depends. Where I am in georgia, you can get a full ass apartment for 845 a month. Internet and transportation is BS though.
shinagami091
Depends on where you live. I live in San Antonio TX and $825 would get you a decent 1 bedroom apartment.
GalaxyTheWolf
I mean... The 130 transportation isn't bad, I spend 95$ a month on gas and drive a car that isn't too good on gas
amop
270 for health insurance at 100k/yr??? More like 450 at 35k
youcanreachmenow
$250 on dining out, that include lunches and a nice dinner?
Flyingwigs
To add my wife to my work plan (we're both 34 with no major health issues) would be over $700/month
QuickLighting53
That one isn't outlandish. My healthcare was free at my last job (HDHP. I had to contribute to my HSA myself though)
n0n53n53
"I had to contribute to my HSA" Bingo. I'm guessing high deductible plan where most is out of pocket paid by your HSA contributions?
QuickLighting53
Deductible at $3k spent. Then they cover 90% I cover 10% until max out of pocket of $5k. For the entire family. Not bad at all
n0n53n53
Not bad if you're all healthy and no E.R. trips
PubstarHero
My health insurance is roughly $300/mo for like, 2k/yr OOP Max and even ER visits are $40. I'm with a very large organization so Im sure >
PubstarHero
Thats why I'm able to get such a good plan at low rates.
FaveBoobsandMilfs
Internet for $20 a month... lies.
youcanreachmenow
$610/month in donations????
FaveBoobsandMilfs
Lol more like $610 for all the other shot he forgot
