The drone is expected to cost around 15,000 euros ($19,000) each.
A Dutch student has revealed a prototype 'ambulance drone', a flying defibrillator able to reach heart attack victims within precious life-saving minutes.
Developed by engineering graduate Alec Momont, it can fly at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour (60 miles per hour).
Painted in emergency services yellow and driven by six propellers, the drone can carry a four kilogramme load - in this case a defibrillator.
The ambulance drone can get a defibrillator to a patient within a 12 square kilometre (4.6 square miles) zone within a minute, increasing the chance of survival from 8 percent to 80 percent.

Fantastic idea for less populous areas, but if you get into big cities, drones like this would lose their usefulness.

Okay, so who will operate the defibrillator? Does the drone do it somehow? Is it up for the person who reported it to operate it?

We have an automated defib at work. We still had to be trained to use it even though it has voice prompts.

In Europe to get driving license you have mandatory CPR lessons, wouldn't be a problem to teach how to operate these, they are simple

Bullshit. Not here anyway.

At 60 mph, that's 1 mile per minute. How can you get a defibrillator to a patient 4.6 miles away within 1 minute?
caralily
Square miles, dude. The area of the circle (which still happens to be like 3.3 miles, but they are converting things from metric).
ChristaE
Doesn't matter, like in the more civilsed half of the planet, we use the metric system, so it's going to be km/h.

Dutch urban areas are quite dense. If you have a few base stations and deploy them on demand, it could work.
BiZZaK
Won't work in America*
leejaem1
Why not? A bunch of these can just circle around above the city and they can be sent to a location by the dispatch when needed.
FlatPlutoSociety
No need to circle. More efficient to have them docked at power stations at strategic points with convenient access to crowded areas.
CanadiansWilllRule
Or just a few central charging stations, this is in the Netherlands, and their cities are quite dense.

NotTheUserYoureLookingFor
Battery life won't support aimlessly circling around a city.
leejaem1
It can. Some of the more recent drones designed can stay airborne for months or even years.
imonchair
Yeah, but they have a different source of power, either solar or gas. This one is battery operated so it can stay airborne for an hour or so

Not *copter style drones. It's burn power or die for them. With wings and solar power they can stay up a long time.

erischilde
Yep but defibs are better than CPR percent wise..
darrex
CPR does not restart your heart. It provides oxygen rich blood to your body so cells don't start dying. The only thing I know of that can
darrex
restart your heart without an AED is a precordial thump and it has a very low chance of actually working and only works if its done
darrex
pretty much right after the arrest.
erischilde
Ah. Heart defib though can assist with stabilizing funny hearbeats. You're right, still need the air!
darrex
It's called cardioversion. It's done on conscious people. I've seen it and it hurts.
erischilde
I never thought of that. I guess the whole thing is traumatic, but yeah. Oh man. Are you EMT or something similar?
justoverlyexcitedyarggh
But what if you don't want CPR?
flymps

turnip001

darrex
Some people don't want resuscitation. More common in elderly people. Example, you're 90, heart stops. They just want to go.
birgerz
Why would you not want CPR?
darrex
Not sure how common it is in younger people but elderly people sometimes sign Do Not Resuscitate forms. Imagine if you were 80+ and
darrex
you've lived your life, you're confined to a nursing home, confined to a bed, or one of the the other thousands of possible reasons. If
darrex
their heart stops, sometimes they want that to be the end. Plus, compressions on an elderly person break every bone in their chest if done
Capitolium
My town just has defibrillators on a lot of public places to be used in an emergency, which is more practical than this.

Capitolium
For rular areas an ambulance is still faster, not to mention much better in bad weather.
MusculusSternocleidomastoideus
Not here, since it takes at least a 15 minute drive from the nearest hospital and they all have two ambulances, so if they're used, fuck
bpetersen
1 Drone for $19000 or 19 $1000 AEDs. You also need a drone flyer and system to alert the drone flyer. Scattering more AEDs is more practical
maxpaxman
It's $19k now, but like with anything, the price will drop when it gets mass-produced. Can't leave the patient to get AED, must give CPR
OrangeCarrot
Less than 19 AEDs and the rest of the money in free classes to teach people first aid & how to use the AED would be even better than 1 drone
OrangeCarrot
Also: drone maintenance costs, costs of training the operators, facilities and ground stations costs, response time (comp to AEDs in place)
0utrider
Watch the video: it's not just an AED - it's also a camera/mic/speaker for a 911 operator along for the ride.
mintz911
I agree. A drone cant open a door. It its only feasible outside. navigating inside any building would be extremely difficult.

WOOOOOOO
The cost of defibrillators to fill up an area that would equal the distance this machine can cover is too expensive.
Leithoa
Not really. In single units they're <2000USD; 10 AEDs == 1 drone. And you don't have to put them everywhere, put them by the crowds.
WOOOOOOO
The drone can service more than just public crowds as well. It can go residential. An AED per household is too expensive.
Leithoa
3)areas. The local pool, playground, rec center, retirement homes.
Leithoa
2)so it would stand to reason that cities or neighborhoods would buy the AEDs too. You don't need one per house, put them by hi risk
Leithoa
Sure, if it's the homeowner buying it. But the drones aren't being sold to homeowners either. It's cities that are supposed to buy them.
WOOOOOOO
Drones can be sent to homes to respond to emergencies.
IcanAlwaysPlayWithMyWilly
The drone can get anywhere, 19 AED's across 12 square kilometres cannot.
Leithoa
Either case needs a human operator at the site. If someone has the wherewithal to call for an AED drone they can jog down to the shop to
bpetersen
Well you have to make sure the drone does not hit any trees or telephone wires/poles on its flight. It would suck if it got stuck in a tree
gunterleeds
Uh, yeah no shit. You'd also have to make sure that people running to collect your scattered AEDs don't fall down open manhole covers….
Leithoa
3)trying to shoe-horn 'drones' into every day life. They solved problem withe the 'solution' already in mind.
Leithoa
2)grab the AED there. Or hell, put them at a crosswalk. This solution didn't come about as the best way to get AEDs in public, it is someone
previoustopcomment
19 AEDs would put one less than 400m away anywhere inside that area.
ROBOT120807
Spacing them by 2km wouldn't even cover half that area.
ROBOT120807
2 square km that is
previoustopcomment
4x3 grid(12km square), put one in the centre of each cell. That's 12 with a Max distance of 500m away at any point. Then you have 7 more.
ImMuddy
I like this drone idea.
Bolognapogna
Or do both. AEDs break also. Your point is only dependent on a shortage of money. Emergency response funds in cities are always high.
Leithoa
If funds are always short why would any city blow so much money on one solution. A distributed network of AEDs is way more robust. 12sqkm
aShogunNamedMarcus
That's kinda like saying "Your point is only dependent on gravity existing"... money is finite and everything has an opportunity cost
Bolognapogna
No, that's a pretty inane comparison, don't you think? Also, city/state/fed funds don't work like that. If you don't spend the funds you 1/
Bolognapogna
get, then you lose it to other agencies. Also, Military/Medical communities always use funds to test new technology. 1-2 would make sense.
aShogunNamedMarcus
I'm not saying a big budget metro can't benefit from them (I could see them being useful to cover NYC's Central Park for instance) 1/2
Leithoa
2) is only a 3-4 square city blocks. You could get the same coverage with a handful of AEDs at a lower cost.
christiangoth
Not sure I agree that scattering AEDs is more practical. At 60 kph this can attend to ~100 square km a minute. How many AEDs for same area?
bpetersen
You have to make sure that the drone does not hit any trees, telephone polls. Make sure drone is fully charged. It also requires maintence
Leithoa
Those problems already have solutions. You also have to make sure AEDs (drone or otherwise) are charged. The solution works, it's just bad.
