Sorry, I’m ignorant but what’s not kosher about corn syrup?
xBenoitBallsx
From a goy: everything. Ever try to spend less on maple syrup? You're getting corn, ain't nothing maple about it.
European/Ashkenazic Jews took on stringencies for Passover because corn, rice & legumes were often stored with grains that could leaven. 1/
Corn syrup is 100% kosher... just not during Passover for most Jews of European descent. This custom is very strong, but no European 2/
rabbi woukd ever assert that a non-Ashkenazi Jew was breaking Passover by eating products with corn syrup.
Ah, cool. Thank you.
Also, if the corn syrup was processed on equipment used for grain, that woukd be a Passover concern.
somnif
It's a technicality thing, some Jews count corn as one of the grains that shouldn't be gotten wet or it might leaven.
(also some corn syrup is made using enzymes sometimes derived from barley, another grain the kosher folks avoid at times)

No, American Coke is terrible compared to Mexican Coke. “Real sugar” sodas taste better.

Most of the world does, the US version uses HFC instead.

moonweasel
Not too good lived there for 6 years, hard to describe the taste. Drank throwback pepsi when I could find it, had sugar, not corn based shit
justworkdamnyou
America coke has a more harsh carbonation to it and if you compare them side by side the Mexican coke doesn't feel as...heavy/thick I guess?
Non American coke almost feels like it's gone kinda flat after you've only had American coke.
Honestly, I can't taste the difference between corn syrup and sucrose in most sodas. What differences there are, are quite minor.
There is a larger difference between plastic-bottle, glass-bottle, and fountain variants, to me, for example. (fountain is best, imho)

It's strange to me that people would be passionate about sucrose instead of fructose. I wonder whether the taste of them really differs.
tonii
From what I've heard from friends who've been to usa the coke over there is almost undrinkable due to it sweetness from hfc.
Well... it is quite sweet, yes, that's the point of it. But you could achieve the same effect just using less of it and instead of touting »
the "cane sugar" in this version, you could call it the "less obnoxiously sweet" version of the drink.
Nah even if you adjusted the ratios of the two to match you can still tell it’s HFCS. It makes the soda thicker. It’s disgusting
There is a very clear difference in taste, especially aftertaste & mouthfeel. HFC leaves a "slimy", syrupy feeling.
Jamby42
You drink mixers? Who drinks straight mixer?
Like the premixed cocktail mixers that just need the alcohol almost all have HFCS unless they specifically say otherwise.
Steffn
The US has HFC instead of real sugar in their coke?
It’s in god damn everything that uses sweetener here not just soda. Powerade, alcohol mixers, most juice and tea brands. Even our syrup
DrPepper523
Even fake honey. :( fake. Honey. Disgusting.
Zeterai
The US government heavily subsidizes the corn industry, so they massively overproduce and make huge amounts of HFC to put in EVERYTHING.
AncientSeraph
The US has HFC instead of sugar in everything.
DoorbyTheHouseShelf
I'm surprised they don't put it in our tap water honestly. It's not just fast/junk food. It's in shit like granola bars and fruit snacks too
comacomacomacomachameleon
the US government HEAVILY subsidized corn production so we have shitloads of it. We put it in every food product and even gasoline.
Also the reason why American chocolate is also shit! :)
mushroomking
Straight up anything you can imagine it existing in and everything else you can't. Hot dogs, peanut butter, cookies, BBQ sauce, you name it.
Wootnessmonster
It's cheaper. At least partially as a result of embargoes. HFCS is in basically anything where it can be substituted.
EchoOfSnac
From what I hear it's not just substitution, but also wherever it can be implemented at all. That's why our bread is so sweet, for example.
You can make bread sweet with real sugar, too. That's basically what regular cake is. Brioche is basically a cake bread at that.
MrWiggleBottom
Oh god. Cane sugar Coke. That stuff’s worth it’s weight in gold to me.
koboshi
My friend is in South America right now (currently Cuba I think) and he is looking for sugar cane drinks. Kids are chewing on sugar canes.

Yeah. Kosher coke. The two-liter bottles have a yellow cap. I can’t find them anywhere.
CommanderShitFace
Me and my roommate have been buying these at Sam's club in packs of 24 bottles since like June
MrFancyPanzer
How much more would it cost to use sugar?
HFCS is orders of magnitude cheaper. Any corn product is cheaper than it’s counterpart ingredient.
What's the price difference between American and Mexican coke?

I feel sorry for people whose default cola drink doesn't have 'real sugar' in it.
Corn sugar is real sugar, so is beet, so is cane.
Hence the inverted commas.
C0baltBlue
High fructose corn syrup is not sucrose though. Cane and beet sugar are.
ddet1207
There are dozens of different kinds of sugars and to act like any of them is any 'less' sugar than the others is ridiculous.
Glucose and fructose syrups are literally measured by their dextrose equivalent values, so there very much are "lesser" sugars.
RosalineKyleAllen
They're all sugars, even starch, but not necessarily in a culinary sense, and they definitely all taste different. Source: did my MSc on it.
HFCS is a thick syrup added to it and you can completely tell the difference. Also personally allergic to it.
viva93
so....people in Mexico? You know the cane sugar stuff is made explicitly to be exported to the US now. domestic mex coke is HF corn syrup.
Anywhere. Coke in glass bottles with real sugar is more normal in Europe. Having to specify cane sugar or HFCS was always odd to me.
mhm least for Europe. they tax the shit out of HFC. HFC is still in most Asian Pacific coke though.
astrangehop
We grow so much corn, we put it in gasoline
jetact12
Buy it at costco!
SpamYarBlockers
Still doesn’t compare to that real cocaine coke
AndrewBrandon
For anyone not in the US and confused, our goverment subsidizes corn syrup so it's cheaper than cane sugar. You can taste the difference.
JumpingSandmann
It's also a tad unhealthier because of the higher fructose content (not that too much cane sugar is healthy lol)
ColoneISanders
True, though I doubt anyone drinking Coca-Cola is all that concerned lol. I usually buy these once in a blue moon as a treat for myself
RayneOfSalt
Oh! Thanks for explaining!
ArcaneDryad
I loved Coke all my life a lil too much. Trying the fructose syrup one made me quit on the spot, literally. Rarely touch even the MX one now
BreakablePotato
So you know about the yellow cap Cokes?
Yellow cap cokes are “kosher” cokes for the Jewish community. They have cane sugar too.
Is it rare? I don't drink it, but I've seen it everywhere I've ever lived (CO, WA, ID, MT) so I honestly just assumed it was normal
derJake
¡Es caña, coño!
agw42
Cane sugar. The slightly less deadly poison. Please don't think cane sugar is healthy, just because HFCS is so bad.
spillblood
Funny story, grew up drinking "real sugar" sodas, bottlers went to HFCS which tastes off to me, quit drinking sodas of any type entirely ftw
brknsoul
Sugar is sugar. If you're gonna have a tasty, sugary sweet, might as well spring for the good shit! Don't try sell me sugar-free chocolate!
I would try to sell you 78% and higher chocolate.
HFCS has a higher ratio of Fructose to Glucose (55/45 instead of 50/50) tho which makes it a tad unhealthier.
fibbertitgibbet
A 33cl can of cola has 35 g sugar in it, 5 above the WHO prescribed limit. It is all bad.
No argument
I'm just saying, Coca-cola is inherently unhealthy. So if you're going to have an unhealthy snack, you might as well get a tasty one.
Don't try to delude your self into thinking that sugar-cane is 'healthier' than HFCS, or that diet-coke is 'healthier' than regular coke.
TheKalifornian
I buy them at Costco by the flat. Definitely the best coke.

towels or ramen or xyz. I go to costco because I need Mexican Coca Cola.

Is all glass bottle coke Mexican Coke? Once in a blue moon I’ll see one at a gas station. I’ll have to give it a try
AGiantTransWoman
Best way to tell is the paper sticker and usually the Mexican bottles are the large glass bottles, coke also sells 6pks of smaller ones
Nope. *literally consults empty bottle from lunch today* sure way to tell is look for "hecho en Mexico" on the side.

We put it in every food product and even gasoline.
hrix
Also the reason why American chocolate is also shit! :)
mushroomking
Straight up anything you can imagine it existing in and everything else you can't. Hot dogs, peanut butter, cookies, BBQ sauce, you name it.
Wootnessmonster
It's cheaper. At least partially as a result of embargoes. HFCS is in basically anything where it can be substituted.
EchoOfSnac
From what I hear it's not just substitution, but also wherever it can be implemented at all. That's why our bread is so sweet, for example.
neithermenoryou
You can make bread sweet with real sugar, too. That's basically what regular cake is. Brioche is basically a cake bread at that.
MrWiggleBottom
Oh god. Cane sugar Coke. That stuff’s worth it’s weight in gold to me.
koboshi
My friend is in South America right now (currently Cuba I think) and he is looking for sugar cane drinks. Kids are chewing on sugar canes.
localsurfer
You can get Mexican coke in Cuba, weirdly.
koboshi
He was looking for sugar cane drink, not coke but I dunno what it is. Sounds like just sugar water to me but he’s eager to find it.
moustacheKin
They don't use sugar cane anymore afaik
CriErr
it is a lie
cosonfused
isn't there a special coke made for Jews made with cane sugar because religious reasons?
MrWiggleBottom
Yeah. Kosher coke. The two-liter bottles have a yellow cap. I can’t find them anywhere.
CommanderShitFace
Me and my roommate have been buying these at Sam's club in packs of 24 bottles since like June
MrFancyPanzer
How much more would it cost to use sugar?
MrWiggleBottom
HFCS is orders of magnitude cheaper. Any corn product is cheaper than it’s counterpart ingredient.
MrFancyPanzer
What's the price difference between American and Mexican coke?
TheRicM
Bout tree-fiddy
TinyBadger101
Same with Dr. Pepper. Sooo much better with actual sugar.
IfILikeYourJokeITellYou
I cut out sugar for a week. Broke it with one of these and got an erection. No joke.
UserSubImgurian
Sorry, my pills fell in the vat. I didn't think anyone would notice. Guess I made a hard choice by not coming forward.
MAup
Sweden laughts in sugarbeets
FellaWithUmbrella
Finland joins your laughter.
ZeekMonster
So are the Dutch.
diesoz
Cave sugar Dr Pepper was the absolute best, but it didn't last.
TinyBadger101
You can still find it. We get ours at the liquor store lol, since it's considered a mixer.
UnicornCock
Cave sugar
InspectorMonroe
I feel sorry for people whose default cola drink doesn't have 'real sugar' in it.
Ivalicenyan
Corn sugar is real sugar, so is beet, so is cane.
InspectorMonroe
Hence the inverted commas.
C0baltBlue
High fructose corn syrup is not sucrose though. Cane and beet sugar are.
ddet1207
There are dozens of different kinds of sugars and to act like any of them is any 'less' sugar than the others is ridiculous.
C0baltBlue
Glucose and fructose syrups are literally measured by their dextrose equivalent values, so there very much are "lesser" sugars.
RosalineKyleAllen
They're all sugars, even starch, but not necessarily in a culinary sense, and they definitely all taste different. Source: did my MSc on it.
goatbible
HFCS is a thick syrup added to it and you can completely tell the difference. Also personally allergic to it.
viva93
so....people in Mexico? You know the cane sugar stuff is made explicitly to be exported to the US now. domestic mex coke is HF corn syrup.
InspectorMonroe
Anywhere. Coke in glass bottles with real sugar is more normal in Europe. Having to specify cane sugar or HFCS was always odd to me.
viva93
mhm least for Europe. they tax the shit out of HFC.
MrWiggleBottom
Yellow cap cokes are “kosher” cokes for the Jewish community. They have cane sugar too.
mushroomking
Don't try sell me sugar-free chocolate!
agw42
I would try to sell you 78% and higher chocolate.
JumpingSandmann
HFCS has a higher ratio of Fructose to Glucose (55/45 instead of 50/50) tho which makes it a tad unhealthier.
fibbertitgibbet
A 33cl can of cola has 35 g sugar in it, 5 above the WHO prescribed limit. It is all bad.
JumpingSandmann
No argument
brknsoul
I'm just saying, Coca-cola is inherently unhealthy. So if you're going to have an unhealthy snack, you might as well get a tasty one.
brknsoul
Don't try to delude your self into thinking that sugar-cane is 'healthier' than HFCS, or that diet-coke is 'healthier' than regular coke.
TheKalifornian
I buy them at Costco by the flat. Definitely the best coke.
experiencemike
It's not real.
ThereItIsISaidIt
Well.. at least the best coke thats still in production.
MrWiggleBottom
Here in Canada, I barely see the Fiesta packs anymore. I bought 4 - 5 cases each time.
w00tberrypie
Same. It is literally the only thing that motivates me to go to costco. Still by other stuff, but I never go to costco because I need paper
w00tberrypie
towels or ramen or xyz. I go to costco because I need Mexican Coca Cola.
Skywalker2416
Is all glass bottle coke Mexican Coke? Once in a blue moon I’ll see one at a gas station. I’ll have to give it a try
AGiantTransWoman
Best way to tell is the paper sticker and usually the Mexican bottles are the large glass bottles, coke also sells 6pks of smaller ones
w00tberrypie
Nope. *literally consults empty bottle from lunch today* sure way to tell is look for "hecho en Mexico" on the side.
TheRicM
What is a flat
FirstAidPoetry
A flat box. Like one of those you get beer in?
ChloeRed
https://www.lansgrupo.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Coca-Cola-Can-330ml-02.jpg that sort of thing, whether bottles, cans, etc.
TheRicM
Ah ok thx!
