Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population.

Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only about one-third of those suffering receive treatment.

Anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion a year, almost one-third of the country's $148 billion total mental health bill, according to "The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders," a study commissioned by ADAA. More than $22.84 billion of those costs are associated with the repeated use of health care services; people with anxiety disorders seek relief for symptoms that mimic physical illnesses.

People with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.

The thing about anxiety is that when it's working properly, it keeps us alive. Is there something to be afraid of that you're not aware of?

Know you are the only person able to control your feelings. Know if you take control, your anxiety will be under your control. Your choice.

I respect that point of view, and there are days I would agree. But on my bad days no amount of taking control relieves the overwhelmingly

A know a little about feeling out of control and isolated from everyone. Resolving 'this will come to pass' makes it so. We aren't alone.

Even though I'm sitting at my desk, surrounded by people I love. Just one anxious person's experience.

*overwhelming feeling of stress. I feel like I'm standing on the edge of a high rise, one wrong move and I'll plummet to my death.

And to make it worse, no one understands. They think reasoning to you about why there is nothing to be anxious about will help.

Recognizing the precursor symptoms can also be a lifesaver.

If you are having anxiety, I will give you a hug. Unless you have anxiety about hugs.

I have anxiety, but it causes actual physical reactions. You know, like PTSD. I wonder if this is what the rest of you experience.

I have physical anxiety, don't think it's necessarily the same though. My anxiety comes from and leads into my body being sick.

Yep, used to get panic attacks that would cause my heart rate to skyrocket and make me vomit like crazy.

Ugh same, meditation/tai chi has really calmed it down though.
