To spike a football (or phone) is to chuck it at the ground as hard and fast as you can.
In football it stops the clock giving you a few extra seconds to get set before the game time runs out.
With cellphones, the clock can also be stopped, and the display and all the other internals. Cellphones don’t like to hit the ground at speed.
