Seven months after Rio de Janeiro hosted the first Olympic Games in South America, many of the expensive venue sites remain abandoned.
Getty Images photojournalist Mario Tama recently captured images of the decaying structures that were promised by organizers to be a legacy benefit to the citizens of Brazil.
The country remains in a deep economic and political crisis following the games. Critics believe the money spent on the games could have been better spent on developing infrastructure in the country.

Olympics are such a waste of money. Ffs at least turn the athletes village into affordable housing. So infuriating.

They actually ripped down a lot of housing to build this shot hole. It was why they were warning tourists not to attend. Disgusting.

And this is why no one should have attended Rio for the games. The money spent on this waste could have been used to care for their people.

London's venues remain in use. This happens to a lot of Olympic cities, but not all. There ARE ways of doing it right.

I was reading they're trying to fix it, LA are bidding for it again, As they're one of the only place that actually made money.
