Two young men were detained for stealing from cars in Odesa Ukraine.
They got into the parking lot of temporarily confiscated vehicles at night and ransacked two cars: VAZ and Volga. They stole two radio tape recorders, speakers and a gear lever.
In court, the detainees said that one of them did not have enough money to travel home to the town of Bilgorod-Dnistrovsky in Odesa region. The man worked at a construction site, but they did not pay him there. The foreman simply took his salary. Left without money, young people decided to steal something.
The defendants could have been sentenced to prison, but the court took into account their low level of intellectual development.
“The upbringing of both accused was obviously not sufficient. This is evidenced by, among other things, the language, the construction of sentences, a small vocabulary of words, the statements themselves, the inability to create of complex sentences to explain their thoughts, or rather the lack of the even the ability to construct a complex sentence in the mind.
Certainly childish, almost unreasonable for an adult, behavior is also evidenced by the circumstances of the offense, which show that when the theft was committed by the accused they had their IDs on them (passports and other documents). And, these documents were left in the backpack at the scene of the crime, ”- stated in the decision of the Malinovsky court in Odesa.
Malinovsky District Court of Odessa sentenced two thieves to reading classical literature. The list of books includes "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, "White Fang" by Jack London and the verse by Taras Shevchenko " The days are passing, nights are passing...".
This became known from the register of court decisions.

I'll donate some Marquez
JustSomePersonThere
Is the court fucking stupid? These boys need remedial education, not fucking classical literature! They’re not gonna benefit squat from that

Okay but we gonna do something about the stolen wages?
nightaudron
I hereby declare you're sentenced to receive education!
UsernameMayBeSubjectToChange
But could these guys even read?
Cherrypoppins69420
White fang should be read by everyone
Woweeee
Ideally, an educator would be included to explain the linguistic nuances that comes with classic literature.
UnrustleYerJimmies
God, please. If they're that uneducated they absolutely need help or it won't be of any use.
Coyotebd
I think you're wrong and sentence you to read "A Brief History of Time" to correct yourself.
UnrustleYerJimmies
LOL! I hated that book. It was so confusing!
HiddenSanity
Did anything happen to the Foreman that took his salary?
mewton2003
Wage theft is common in Ukraine. I'm not even sure what they can do, the courts are corrupt and weird.
HieronymousFlex
Does it ever?
NAbsentia
I love this. Reading literature elevates the mind.
Lemmingofdarkestnight
Reading Crime and Punishment is an unreasonable punishment for a crime
GrimlockZ
No it just needs a chart. It's a fabulous piece of literature about the Mattie of justice and guilt
CorneliaXaos
Crime and Punishment is kinda drab throughout, but picked up near the end. I should maybe reread it to see if a second reading improves it.
Lemmingofdarkestnight
There might be better translations these days too.
FractalChainsaw
"Writing it was a crime, and reading it is a punishment." --Something I heard somewhere
Grabari
This book was really good for younger me. I think they will be fine (with some additional education tho)
copperdomebodhi
Put it down for three days. Picked it back up and couldn't remember who anyone was.

Is anyone going to do anything about the foreman?
BenderBendingRrodriguez
Make them read The Witcher. There's a huge amount of moral philosophy that they could benefit from, and it's an extremly entertaining series
bigblindguy
Not to belittle something you care about but no.... they are being made to read to educate them and teach them prose and complex thoughts:
BreakablePotato
Flipside, Witcher will be more appealing. Better a decent book that they want to read vs a classic that they don't want. Baby steps.
bigblindguy
For sure, personally I can't stand Harry Potter but I'm super pleased it got loads of kids to enjoy reading, reading is a superpower.
BenderBendingRrodriguez
Just because a story is fiction, doesn't mean it's not educational
bigblindguy
For sure, my laggy connection stopped me finishing the comment/reply: The Witcher is very fun but it is not prosaically very polished.
DaPastry
I thought it was from a ??????ed author.
arthurvanhoudt
IMHO that would be too complex for where they are intellectually!
nightaudron
What's the order of the books tho
BenderBendingRrodriguez
Start with The Last Wish, then read sword of destiny.
AMBM2
IMO this is a great way to deal with minor crimes. Solve the root cause, dont just punish.
AMBM2
When you look into the circumstances- bad education and a manager whose ripping them off- it becomes clear the crime is the result of
AMBM2
Their society, not just themselves
SayWhatYouMeanMeanWhatYouSay
Educate the masses! Say it with me: EDUCATE THE MASSES!
AMBM2
EDUCATE THE MASSES! But actually a good, accessible education system is one of the best ways to create a meritocracy and reduce crime.
AMBM2
Unfortunately that’s the very reason so many wealthy, powerful people don’t want to do it
SayWhatYouMeanMeanWhatYouSay
Yep! That's why we EDUCATE THE MASSES, EDUCATE THE MASSES!
SteamingTheCat
Why no Russian literature? There's plenty.
SayWhatYouMeanMeanWhatYouSay
Because they’re trying to inspire these men to better themselves not drive them to suicide!
tm85naibsel360
Because Ukraine and Russia are on the outs. Ukraine had a big Civil War over a region w/ Russian ancestry wanting to cede and rejoin Russia
venomlash
(aided of course by Russian "little green men", elite commandos turning up in militias there ostensibly of their own accord)
tm85naibsel360
More to it but that is the tail end of the last reason and sufficient for 140 characters
Onebigcanuck
These guys are gonna love the Count of Monte Cristo.

Is it filed under Fiction or Educational?
AllMyOpinionSuck
Why the hate for a great piece of classical literature
LokiShade
AllMyOpinionSuck
Ya making fun of his last name is such a deep joke there was no way I could have got it. That doesn't explain why, outside childish humor
