Turns out, searching for a place to rent from 2,500 miles away is super stressful, especially knowing I need to find a way to move my 2 cats. But I'm optimistic!

Awesome OP. Make the most of it. Talk to your vet, years ago we moved 2 cats from Denver to NYC, then 4 years later to CA. Tranqs worked

Get a travel carrier that has a travel litter box. Set it up weeks before the move so they’re used to it. Talk to the vet for meds.

Just go... stay in a hotel for a few days so you can get a feel for the new area. I did this when I moved from coast to coast & it was great

moved across the country 4 times . Look for apts near familiar things you need like gas, grocery, maybe freeway. Use crime maps.

When I moved, I put the cat on a leash, & secured it in the car so if I got out, he couldn't run. Also had easy access to the litter box.

When I moved across country with a cat, I was able to live with a new coworker for a month while I found a place, waited for it to be ready.

Before signing a lease, get up early, drive to the potential apt, and try the morning commute. Then drive there after work. See if it's okay

Also what may help is if you pack some of their used litter. Dump it in their box at new place so they at least have a familiar smell. (1/2)

Yeah, we've got one cat that can be finicky with her litter as it is, so we'll have to be extra patient with her in the new environment.
