To be fair, it only says that he's PLANNING it. I *planned* to wash 2 loads of dishes today, but don't give me credit for doing them until I actually DO them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't doubt he wants it but planning and accomplishing are 2 very different things. He's done great so far but you can't credit him for things that have yet to happen.

Having a ton of trees will likely reduce the ambient city temperature during hot summers and flood run off volumes too. There’s a ton of benefits to a literal green city.

2 weeks ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Trees and mandated cool roofs can reduce the city core air temperature significantly- not only more comfortable outdoors but it reduces the A/C load (which itself exhausts heat into the city from the condensers). https://www.gatech.edu/news/2025/06/12/can-cool-roofs-help-atlanta-beat-heat-georgia-tech-experts-weigh

This man is clearly some kind of maniac and must be stopped... From his nefarious plan of being the most awesome mayor ever

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Including or not including the parks?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We just came back from NYC and it’s fuckin magical and he’s got major support

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

the desire to cover "30%" with threes in 4-year time is alright, but it will take them at least 10 years or more (depending on the tree specie) to cast a significant shadow and cooldown. This is not a short time expense but rather a long term investment.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

p.s. and I hope there will be no Chinese ash as these trees stink gross mid-bloom (especially after rain) and are invasive AF

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My block is tree-lined because my landlord ponied up to do both sides of the whole street a couple decades ago. In the summers, it's an oasis of cool shade. Every nyc street should be like this and the reason they're not is mostly that getting trees planted in nyc is pay-to-play. Here's hoping Mamdani has some follow-through here.

2 weeks ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

NYC has about 24% coverage, so his plan will increase that by about 25% if it achieves 30%, for reference. Most blocks in NYC have at least some trees.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's right, and I don't quite understand the math the city uses on this stuff. A lot of blocks have so little coverage. They say we can't get to 30% without planting a bunch of trees on private land, but I feel like there is room for 5x more trees on just about every block I see.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How is NY going to pay for this? Does he think trees just grow on trees?! /s

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It’s sad that this funny ass comment needs a “/s” because of how shitty the reading comprehension around here is lately

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's the biggest threat he poses to the other politicians in this country, showing that things actually can, in fact, be budgeted appropriately instead of taking underhanded bribes from rich assholes who want nothing more than to push poor people's faces deeper into the mud.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great to plants lots of trees - but I don't think planting tons of them on a rooftop like what's shown is a good idea.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That looks like an elevated rail platform to me, I'm pretty sure it can take the weight

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not so much thinking about the weight, but what the roots will likely do over time. They'll wreak havoc. Depends on the type of tree though.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a photo of the south end of the highline. Those trees are already there.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of the people... By the people.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was the plan before mamdani. He's just better at communicating

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah, a lot of things he’s gotten credit for were already in the works. That said, ungumming the works and getting shit to actually happen is actually what the job of mayor is all about, so it does matter if he’s breaking up logjams and such. I don’t know if that applies in this case, though.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was the pothole-fixing announcement just well-handled PR, or were previous mayors really so venal they couldn't even be bothered fixing a bunch of potholes?!

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

1st one. Every mayor's staff (going back at least to Giuliani) has tried using potholes as PR. A series of good winters = fewer potholes = brag about how good the streets are. Bad winters = lots of potholes = brag about how many potholes were filled.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is the face of a man that's tired of walking through a bowl of soup to get to work everyday

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think this is great, but I do wonder how this is being paid for.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I have not looked, but taxes would be most likely. If you're not busy skimming money or paying it to your buddies for 'work' it can actually do helpful things.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The real question you should ask yourself is: do you wonder how constant increases to police budgets get paid for, or how every new road project gets funded, and if not why not?

An initiative like this will probably SAVE money, beatification projects reduce anti social behaviour, the heat reduction will save people money spent on air conditioning, the improved air quality will save money on health care.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The mayor of New York is extremely powerful compared to the mayor's office of most cities, so it's a little unfair to make direct comparisons to other mayors around the country. But certainly he makes every other New York mayor look like trash.

2 weeks ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

yeah this is what kinda sucks about cities like Los Angeles. Its more decentralized that a mayor would have a tough time making big moves like NYC. I get that LA specifically wanted to avoid NYC's centralized power but just as there are cons with a centralized gov, there are cons with a decentralized gov.

Especially ”America’s Mayor” Rudy Giuliani.

2 weeks ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Guiliani’s problem was definitely not in the realm of “doing stuff.” He did a lot of stuff. A lot of it was awful, but he was definitely out there doing the things he campaigned on.

Especially Guliani

2 weeks ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Nah. He did that all by himself.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Even there, the same election that Mamdani won also included 4 ballot measures scaling back the City Council’s ability to block the Mayor. A good thing, when the Mayor is Mamdani, but Adams pushed for those same measures and it would have been awful with him (notably, those measures didn’t win even when Adams did, because while he did manage to win he was never nearly as popular/trusted as Mamdani). Not that I expect our recent mayors would have done what Mamdani has, even if they could’ve...

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a little more complicated than that, Mamdani came into office with a fuckton of political capital and little to no actual opposition.

I will agree that the last several NYC mayors have been useless at best, his immediate predecessor (Adams) was EXTREMELY corrupt.

Yeah. Nice concept, but I question the technical aspects.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

Of TREES??? Trees in a city is a question to you? Every major world city has this currently, and this is a 'concept' to you??? Trees!

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It's NYC, not Billings MT. 30%? Yeah, I question the technical details. But hey, I get it. There are all too many people in the world that can't think past the "boy doesn't' that sound wonderful" part. Everyone loves the idea, no one wants to figure out how to actually make it happen. That's "someone else's problem"

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

NYC has about 24% coverage already, and has for decades. The NYC Parks Dept. is very on top of things.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve always lived in houses with large trees. 10-12ft from buildings and sidewalks should be fine for decades. Sewer lines though? It’s got what plants crave!

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Should be doesn't mean is. I'm currently remodelling my garage because a white pine growing about 10 feet from it got its roots under a shallow foundation and heaved it enough to make the wall bulge out.

Also, 10 feet is a minimum distance for firetrucks as well in case anything goes wrong.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Approximately 85% of NYC streets have less than 10 feet between buildings and the “furnishing zone” where things like trees are, per https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pedestrians/pedestrian-mobility.shtml. Still, NYC already has a lot of trees, so the city knows how to do this, this just prioritizes more of them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sewercidal is a chemical you pour down your toilet a couple of times a year to discourage roots from infiltrating your pipes. Still, every few years I have to get the plumber out to route-out the pipes. But the tree (blue spruce) has been there longer than I've been alive, so it's worth the occasional cost.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I’ll check that out. I have a plumber out once a year and was considering buying a machine

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The obligation of wearing a helmet reduce bike usage and thus raise mortality rate. It helps victim blaming, and drivers care less around cyclists. Infrastructure save lives, not helmets

I like 95% of what this guy has done, but the city-run grocery stores is likely a bad idea that will inevitably fail to deliver on promises that are unachievable (I’m happy to be proven wrong here).

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

My hope is that its to set an example of the extreme inflation, price gouging, and collusion that is going on. I'm not sure of the details, like if they are going to go full on generics/local products or still trying to have all the brand name things, but if they can show what's possible without the greed even at a small scale it will definitely have an effect beyond just helping those that are in dire need.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The United States government has had government run grocery stores for decades now. Super low prices, worldwide distribution. They're on pretty much every military base.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Even if they fail, they'll learn valuable lessons for next time, and shape future public discourse.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We’ll see I guess. Cheers to being wrong.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least he's trying to do a thing there though. Even if it doesn't meet his stated goals, hopefully it helps with the problem to some degree.

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This is literally why I voted for him. I frankly didn’t expect he’d be able to deliver even as much as he already has, and stuff like rent freeze and city-owned groceries seem unlikely to work even if he makes them happen, but fuck, we need somebody to fucking try something. I’m an engineer and my wife’s a doctor and we’re getting priced out of the city. Fucking what? We’ll manage, we have a lot of privilege, but if it takes this much privilege just to get in, wtf are people supposed to do?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He does, unfortunately. He kept on the ultra-Zionist police commissioner Tisch, he didnt shut down the illegal sale of Palestinian land in NYC synagogues, and he both-sidesed the protestors of the land sales. He is good on domestic policy but he has unfortunately compromised way too much on Palestinians.

He's still doing good things, but even still, always hold your politicians to account for their failures.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He is good on domestic policy but international policy is not in the scope of his job. FIFY

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All the things I mentioned were things happening in his city. Hiring a police commissioner is literally one of his mayoral powers.

I'm not saying we should hate him for these failures but they are failures.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BUT THINK OF THE BILLIONAIRES THAT ARE GETTING TAXED AN EXTRA 0.001% OF THEIR WEALTH!

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I love him, but I hope he has a maintenance plan for them. Ours got messed up because they stopped trimming for a few years. Suddenly we had downed wires on the regular

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

1. NYC has a robust Parks & Rec department that has no doubt been involved in these plans from the get-go. NYC’s coverage was already 24%, so increasing to 30% is “only” a 25% increase for them. 2. NYC also has all of its wires underground, so while unmaintained trees certainly could cause problems, downed wires wouldn’t be one of them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a politician your job isn't to legislate, it's to get elected. Most voters are fairly uninformed, and lots of elections work on slim margins so they toe the party line and try to be everywhere at once.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not laziness! It's grifting for corporate 'contributions' to their campaign. 🤔

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

2 weeks ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

Not exactly. They have the house the senate and the presidency. It's not as easy to get things done unless you have this combination (in regards to Trump and McConnell).

Mitch claimed Obama couldnt appoint a SCOTUS in the 10 months before an election but then pushed through a SCOTUS judge in 12 days before an election when Trump was in power. Worst of it all is... imagine if the Democrats since Bill Clinton had done the stuff Mamdani has been doing over the past few months. Democrats would have had the trifecta, President, Senate, House for the past 35 years. 9 Democrat SCOTUS judges. America would have been a literal paradise by now.

I read the idea that Obama should've just seated whoever he wanted. When the Senate declined hearings he (apparently, I'm not a lawyer) could've gone "wow, McConnell likes my pick so much he doesn't even need hearings for approval" and seated his pick. GOP likely would've sued and it would've gone to SCOTUS but at least then they would've had to rule on whether the Senate HAD to hold hearings when a SCOTUS nom was made

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Every mayor has "more trees" in their PR checklist. Mayor Adams also said he wanted to hit 30% cover. He targeted 2030. Mamdani is making the same announcement but pushing the date to 2040. But sure, Mamdani is special. Every announcement is slurped up with no skepticism, no memory of prior administrations, and nobody is actually waiting until he delivers to cover him in glory. I want the guy to succeed, but come on, take his dick out long enough to take a deep breath.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 24

Even if you have an actual, legitimate point to make, saying things like "take his dick out long enough to take a deep breath" will make everyone lose all interest in your point.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Difference is he is actively working toward his promises and being transparent about it as well as progressing. Plus he is showing results for some of his promises very quickly. Think of it like this, the previous admins were not forgotten but they lowered the standards of normal people so much that this guy doing the bare minimum is enough for people to celebrate.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Mamdani will need to plant 1mm trees. Bloomberg promised 1mm trees and delivered, so we have a model. Mamdani isn't following that model. Bloomberg had it fully funded from a bunch of public/private sources. Mamdani is not funding it at all. He *cut* the parks budget. Mamdani also has to put a few hundred thousand of those trees on private land and his plan is sketchy on that. By every reasonable expectation, Mamdani will do better than Adams and worse than Bloomberg on trees.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

It's fascinating to see people downvoting you out of pure disagreement with your position while not addressing the real world policy that you are referring to at all. I would like to know more on this topic. Can you direct me to your info sources, if they are collated in any fashion, so I don't have to dig up 8 disparate sources on my own? If not, I'll go hunting.

I'm afraid it's mostly memory from being a NYer and a geek, but: for Mamdani stuff start here: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/climate/downloads/pdfs/NYC-Urban-Forest-Plan-2026.pdf and for Bloomberg's thing was part of PlaNYC (terrible name!) in like 2006 or so.

2 weeks ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

That is the fucked up part of it. Politicians are babies. They have no object permanence and cannot percieve anything abstract. They gotta be bribed with physical objects or bank balances to register something exists. The idea of taxes and where their paycheck comes from is a total mystery to them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That and they go for short term wins. I call it the Baseball Diamond Stewardship. Politicians love the ribbon cutting, the pictures, and the press that comes with dedicating a baseball diamond because it is publicily popular... but maintaining it is an ongoing expense. An expense they will quickly cut and relocate. So it will get covered in grass, go to shit, and covered in trash. Then they'll remove the diamond. Then in 10 years they'll build a new one

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

/2 No one sees the long term value of maintaining the things we have for public good or improving on them. It's so much flashier to cut the ribbon on a big project and move onto the next thing. Let the old ones grow weeds

There's money for a bad government contract, but none to be found to make this subway station not a moist 108F in the summer time where the public needs to stand

2 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Kinda like when a certain orange anus paid unqualified golf course managers to renovate a national monument and they fucked it up rather than doing something productive with the money.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Exactly. Always money for a no bid contract that didn't follow general sourcing procedures nor expert analysis

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Money is needed for important things. Important things are things that are personally important to Trump. That is the entire list. Anything else that gets funded was almost guaranteed done against his wishes, including things that support and continue his ability to retain power.

Won't that also like dampen the sounds some too? Which would make it more pleasant to live there I assume.

Seems to be nice in Atlanta, we have lots of trees.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And they actually make drivers drive safer by making the streets *feel* less like mini highways. Drivers instinctively slow down.

Honestly? Not noticably, don't expect too much. But it is still nicer to live around.

I'm guessing the difference is more significant in highrise areas - a canyon of concrete and glass makes for a lot of echo if there's nothing soft to absorb sound. But yeah, even if made no acoustic difference, more trees = more better.

And keep the city cooler

2 weeks ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

It would also even out the temperature so its less hot in summer and less cold in winter.

2 weeks ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

..."and less cold in winter" Eh. It's losing me with this bit. I love the cold and fucking abhor heat, and while it obviously won't turn into a second summer...a "less cold" winter seems very antithetical to me lol.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its just the extremes, and you're looking at under 5 degrees of difference, and mostly wind chill, which is what causes a lot of the sudden temperator drops

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Probably more like "just takes the edge off"

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, but bear in mind that NYC already has 24% coverage. Going up to 30% is still a 25% increase over 24%, so I’m happy it’s happening, but NYC already has a lot of trees. The thing that matters most here, really, is *where* he’s putting them. Some streets are lacking them entirely, and *that* is the biggest problem. Just putting more trees in places that already have some is nice, but not necessarily solving an important problem. I’m sure he knows that, though, so I expect it’s well-targeted.

I fucking love it when people get realistic goals, because it does not divorce them from actually trying to make it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and Mamdani has been remarkably good at following through. I just see a lot of comments that seem to believe NYC streets were completely bare of trees before him.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

then again you can still measure where the redlined areas of nyc are by looking at which areas don't have coverage and their daily temps..

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it'd cut wind too

2 weeks ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

and the shade would cut down on the temperature too

2 weeks ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Not to mention how many birds you'd be hearing and seeing with that many more trees. Less car noises echoing, more birdsong, cooler temps, the sound of rustling leaves, hopefully less of that terrible "car fluids on pavement baking in the sun" stench.

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sure, but when *I* cut wind 20 times a day, no one cares /s

Friendly reminder that there are people pissed off that he's cleaning up the garbage problem

2 weeks ago | Likes 333 Dislikes 3

Well ya, he's showing the people good governance and the corrupt people don't like that as he isn't pro-pedophilia like the Republicans love

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Son of a bitch cleaned up my diaper mountain. Now I can't smell when it's high noon. Total bullshit!

Im pissed he's accepting credit for shit the last mayor or governor did before he was in office. but apparently that's only an issue when it's republicans who do it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 116

the bin program has been on the books and ready to go whenever for decades, mamdani pushed it through

2 weeks ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

https://youtu.be/8AJ4Bt2NCZQ this is from 24, mamdani didn't run until 25 right?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

from what I read, adams pushed it through in 24, didn't come into effect until mamdani's term started. Then there's the state's free schooling and childcare acts that the governor pushed b4 mamdani won the primary and the state's 2nd house tax when his 2% rich tax died in legislature. Major Stuff he's done is 0'd the deficit, line itemed library budgets, and got a land bill for the city groceries.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 47

https://www.vitalcitynyc.org/what-has-mamdani-done-so-far/ Seems like a slightly larger list? Dunno though, I'm not from NYC.

2 weeks ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

100% down with tracing the proper origins of things and giving proper credit. But if we're comparing this to Republican behavior, then we need to find the prior moment where Mamdani et al tried to stop this from happening, before taking credit once it was clear it was happening anyway.

*That* part is what makes the Republican examples so vile.

2 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

interesting, degrees of wrongness in the sameactions. That's something to think on, thank you.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

They're not the same actions, is my point. If Mamdani is taking credit for someone else's work, then he should rightfully be called out for it. But it's not a direct mirror of Republican behavior unless he also tried to stop said work from happening beforehand.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

https://youtu.be/8AJ4Bt2NCZQ here's a vid from 24 of adams rolling out the nyc trash bins program. /gallery/we-loved-giant-piles-of-rats-cockroaches-IUIxm9m here's mamdani being credited for it in 26.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

If Republicans are allowed to do it, so is he. Get reckt, loser. Lmao

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You think republicans should be allowed to do it?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

They don't. That's why people are mad. Im throwing you a rope here brother.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So, again, why's it wrong for republicans but not for demsocs? Like why's trump *rightly* on the front page for jacking biden's prescription policy but mamdani's not for adams' trash bins?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Ooo here it is guys! I was wondering what MAGAs were going to say when Mamdani started making the city better objectively. It's this! "It was really the republican mayor who did all of it it just happened to go into effect during Mamdani's reign." Okay bro.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Was a dem mayor, and governor's a dem. and top reply to me even says the bin was setup decades ago, and *wrongly as it was indeed adams* mamdani finally pushed the ok button.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

"Yeah he is doing great stuff but I'm pissed cause he's taking credit for other great stuff" is ... odd, to me. Politicians are going to politick. As long as great stuff IS happening, I don' tmind if the new politicans takes more credit than they deserve as long as they are ALSO doing great stuff not just riding coattails.

Ultimately someone has to celebrate the win, and just like in companies, it tends to be whoever's in charge at the time of the win.

2 weeks ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

So you're cheering trump over the prescriptions, then? And I don't know what he's done is 'great' more than the bare minimum of governance.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 32

I said as long as he's also doing great stuff. I did say that, twice, right? If Trump was like "hey healthcare costs are down thanks to me" and included prescriptoin drug prices (that actually went down, not just promised) then yeah I'd give EVEN trump a pass on the politicking.

Since he is actively increasing overall costs, the drug prices were a smokescreen, and he's NOT doing other great things... then my statement stands.

2 weeks ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

And I said i'm pissed mamdani's accepting credit for stuff he had no involvement in. Odd to me to say that's fine as long as you like something else he's doing.
