For real, just add an -s, -es, or -ies.
Even for acronyms, names, or numbers.
LASERs, bees, apostrophes.
The apostrophe is for possessive nouns and contractions of multiple words.

One of my pet peeves. So cringe when I see a small biz paid good money for a sign spelled wrong. Bagel’s. Tire’s. Hope the sign shop tried.

What about "deez"?
IHateYouMyselfAndEveryone
You also add an 's to indicate possession on singular nouns which already end with an S. e.g. "James's house," not "James' house".

The most painful to me was a banner at a school that said Boy's Basketball Champions 1984. School has thankfully since been torn down.
RadiDaddy
Just because of that sign? Wow! Who was in charge of that school, Hedley Lamarr?
ImperatorNikolai
Im sure declining enrollment is the "official" reason, but deep down I still believe

Thank'ies!
capughe
I misread this as indicating you didn't need an apostrophe for plural possesives, which you do.

My last name is Jolly. (Yes really). The plural of Jolly would be Jollys.
Metallica93
Except that "90s" is incorrect and needs an apostrophe (as does any shortened year), i.e. '90s.
hightechpirate
90's
jonReremy9669
only if you say '990s
NBRI
Doesn't "90s" imply 90-99? (Like "upper 90s" for a temperature or something?)

Then you know what you like. Go get them wrinkles
MrRemakes
It doesn't need the apostrophe. It makes sense to use it, but it also makes just as much sense not to.
Metallica93
English needs fewer exceptions, thus the apostrophe should be added since it's a shortening (as you would any abbreviation/contraction).
StellaMatutina
Wait wtf who doesn't write it as "'90s"?
Metallica93
The O.P. had "90s", originally. Seems MrRemakes thinks it isn't necessary, as well. Not a fan of adding more exceptions in English, myself.

Actual question I've had for a long time: Do these types of posts and/or grammar nazis exist in other languages?

Jazeker.

Imagine trying for french though

That's actually a really cool question. I bet it comes down to flexibility of the language, and percentage of literate users
MrsHowVeryDareYou
Only time I question this is when pluralizing a letter. Grades are capitalized (As Bs Cs) but what about “three ms”? Three m’s? Three Ms?
MrsHowVeryDareYou
Grammatically it’s wrong, but grammar exists for clarity…

Its not that I dont appreciate this post. It has it's merits. We need more elfs on the shelfs, and none to soon!

"Elf on the Shelf" is the name of the object. You'd pluralize the whole name, not the components. Elf on the Shelfs.

s for plural (pig vs. pigs), 's to show possession of a thing (Stacy's diner). s' is for when a noun already is plural to show possession. >
TheStaffmaster
>and while we're on the topic, plural of latin derived nouns that end in an -s sound is ALWAYS "i." ex: House is Houses, Octopus is Octopi.

Ephemeris becomes ephimerides when plural.

Actually "octopuses" has become acceptable

It always was, depending on what language you pluralise in.
