Play Pathfinders instead. It's the same basic mechanics and gameplay but easier for beginners to get in to. And, yes, worth a try.

DnD 5th edition is much easier for a newbie than pathfinder.

5th is definitely easier to learn, but Pathfinder has way more options. Though this means the characters become broken really really easily.

GURPs is also like D&D but can be any setting you like; Sci Fi, Old West, etc. Incase fantasy is not your style.
