I often don't bother with the cover letter. A resume says what I need to say, and I've never felt the need for the cover letter. Hasn't hurt

Learn to use it against them. It's checking for keywords and only sends the people who have a high match percentage. Reword your resume 1

To reflect enough keywords and then it gets seen by a human. Some companies are required to interview high matches. So if the posting says 2

It's because that is necessary for references and background. Your resume should only have relevant experience to show you have experience.

If you're listing unrelated work experience on your resume, and listing more than 2 or 3 jobs, you're messing up.

Also, many of the decent companies with online applications will have it auto-fill most fields based on a quick scan of your resume.
