When you go up a tax bracket, only the money you make in excess of that level gets taxed at the new rate. So let’s say you make $50K a year.

Let’s say there’s a tax bracket for $0-$40k that has a 10% tax rate and one for $40k+ that has a 25% tax rate. You don’t pay 25% of $50k.
