Good days

May 25, 2023 7:16 PM

Honestly, this is more or less spot on.

Yeah, but how many kids went missing? That happens these days and it makes news. Back then, might've just been a tuesday.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My mom worked 12 hr nights, after school and even in summer so long as we were quiet or out of the house without getting into trouble with authorities and didn't majority hurt ourselves she didn't give a fuck where we were.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Your mom thought she got rid of you for 8 hours. That's it. That is all she thought. Trust me on this.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, gen-x here, I can attest this was all true - maybe not in a single day, tho. ;)

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Mom was just happy you were not doing what she did at your age

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I like how you can tell how many people had a shitty mom by all the ones saying she was glad you were gone lol.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was raised in a hog farm so we were trying to ride the sows and making potions out of moss, mud, manure, and "Ancient Pig Dust" from the shed. Also had a rotten goose egg fight.

My friend, at one point me and my friends were trying to make nitroglycerine and gelignite. But point taken: Having a bike and instructions to come home when the streetlights came on was a HUGE thing for personal freedom for youths.

Stealing out of unlocked cars. Stealing candy and cigarettes from the gas station. Ding Dong Ditch. Trying smoking and drinking. We did a lot of dumb stuff between 10-15 yrs old.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Pretty accurate (1978):

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

smoked a pack of cigarettes you stole from her purse, looked at the old playboy you found by the bus stop that you and your friends stashed, rang some foorbells and ran and drank out of at least 2 hoses left on in peoples front yard.

Told my mom recently some of the stuff my brother and I did aa kids. She told me that if she had known, that she wouldn't have let me out of the house! I told her 'That's why I never told you!'

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only five miles? Son, I rode my bike to the next town *on the freeway* (not even making that up - it's a miracle that I didn't get killed, and I'm still now sure how I didn't. I was pretty fucking stupid at 8).

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not a single drag queen in sight to corrupt your precious hetero normality

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

/sarcasm tag

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom didn't think shit. She was just happy I was gone so she could do her drugs in the open.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And hammered some nails into some houses under construction and dug through the dumpsters.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But we learned some stuff eh? Raleigh Choppers get death wobble at 40mph... green Ash is a poor wood for bow making... swim ACROSS the rip or river current don't fight it... fire hardened spear points don't take down a bull... trains win in a game of chicken...

3 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 3

My brother learnt the train one the hard way

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A local guy, with some help from meth, tried to fist fight a train with predictable results.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Packing tape does not stop blood flow well, you cant hide a chunk of burned carpet in the middle of the living room with a upturned clothes basket, you can make 2 dollars and change can get you slurpees twice a day for 2 kids, you can somehow hear your dad's whistle from 5 miles away, Garden hose water was the coldest and the best water, and lastly, your parents did not start to worry about you untill 2 hrs past sundown.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

and now woods dont exist so...

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ones that survived now swear it was perfectly safe and complain that there are too many fences and rules nowadays… but y’know, they never did find out where that weird loner kid moved away to…

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Waiting for penny to get flattened on the train tracks.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We used to head out to the lonely rail spur to shoot bb guns. The electrical insulators on the poles were a favorite target. Train rarely came and a penny laid there for days unmolested.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or putting as many logs as you could find on the tracks to try and derail it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those were the days. Me, my brother, and half a dozen other kids. Just exploring and having REAL friends.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My bike got stuck in 10th speed and the gears stripped. Consequently, I have ridiculously strong legs at the age of 42.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh my mom knew what was up. There was a reason why i got many hours of forced swim lessons as soon as I could walk. There was a lake nearby, and once I was on two wheels there was no keeping me out of it. The only rule was "dont swim near the boat ramp or beyond the no-wake buoy."

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Our community pool was next to the lake so the rule was I could swim in the pool but not the lake and I was never ever supposed to climb the gazebo on the pier and jump off into the lake with my friends.

...and this is how we are doing fine while living through the dot com crash, 911, the Iraq war, 2008 mortgage crisis, the first ukraine war, Donald trump in office, Covid-19, and alien landings. We don't really give a fuck, and continue to smoke dope, listen to snoop dogg and play Zelda, Super Mario and Counter-strike.

Aaaaaaaaaaamen

Preach

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Usually fireworks made an appearance too…

3 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

And firecrackers!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We worshipped the neighbor kid who had his very own brick of firecrackers. Black cats. Even better that they were illegal. He made a fortune off us reselling the forbidden fruit.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or bonfires and flaming tennis ball tube launches.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

DIY fireworks made from Estes rocket motors, dowels, and as much firecrackers we could attach with electrical tape

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Aluminum cans duct taped shut with the rocket engines' powder ground up. Whoaa boy did that make some noise in the sewage systems.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sad thing is that the generation that enjoyed this have not allowed the same freedom to their own kids. Some research has shown that the 'playable space' has decreased by like 70%

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Not that you could. Some karen would call the police.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The rise in serial killer awareness was the major contributor to that. People became afraid of kidnappings and murders. Sad thing is you'd think the same people who were so impacted by killers would look at the school shootings today and react the same but they don't really care

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not so sure GenX is the generation that built suburbs and gravel pits over the undeveloped land they played in.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If you're Gen X, your mom wasn't thinking about you at all. We were raised under a policy of salutary neglect.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

As my mom admitted recently..."you'd have been better off being raised by wolves."

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You okay there buddy?

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I'm Gen X, of course I'm ok. We have to be.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No way in hell your mom thought that lol

3 years ago | Likes 268 Dislikes 3

she's like "whatever, just don't end up in jail while I pound red wine and bang the mailman."

3 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

My mom definitely would have thought that. Mostly because that was shit I did lol. There’s a joke that I am responsible for half her grey hair and my brother is responsible for the other half lol

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Oh, he's out playing" is about as much thought as you could hope for.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She knew, it was just easier for us to learn the dangers of ouija boards on our own. Dammit mom I’ve been haunted since 1999.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My mom had two rules, no cops and no blood. And she was flexible on the no cops part.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Haha, she just didn’t care

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mom was getting day drunk and fucking the mail man. As long as you showed back up around sundown, no questions would be asked.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Moms only wanted one thing- plausible deniability.

And alone time with dad

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And wine.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Particularly if you were actually at the nearest airfield 15 miles away and daring each other to jump up and slap the landing gear from the top bar of the gate or something.

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

As a kid a neighbor friend and I once taped scissors to the end of broom sticks and attempted to joust. She knew god damn well how fucking stupid we were.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Your mom had a betting pool going on who would lose an eye first.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They had to put a commerical on TV that said "It's 10pm. Do you know where your children are?" for our parents to remember we existed.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

My mom did. and was right -.-

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And built a ramp to jump our bikes off of

3 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 0

Over the fire in our case

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Railroad tracks are fun for this...but you should choose your spot carefully.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Usually to jump over the fire

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah glad we aren't the only idiots who did this. Usually on a narrow plank resting on a pile of otherwise unsupported bricks. Would collapse as you hit the jump, sometimes after you made it off the end... sometimes

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Idiots Who Did This" was a HUGE club back in the day. I went to Japan in the early 90s and found a couple of chapters there as well. We are known world wide and transcend cultures it seems.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We used to drag Christmas trees from the side of the road behind us to light them on fire and jump over them with dirt bikes.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stole my line

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We would lay down behind the jump and see how many people you could jump over. Detroit summers! (Raising high the one good arm I still have)

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We did the same in small town MN

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea, cause you copied us! Copycat. That was me in 1979, thinking we were the first kids to build a ramp and jump people. Lol
