We all like finished photos first, right? Well I figured after the interest in my initial post, I would share with you my vehicle build. Lots of photos, apologies in advance!

When I first bought it in 2013, I came across it in Chicago in the barn of an old man's house. The owner had it gifted to him when his dad passed. Unfortunately, the car reminded him of his dad and wanted to get rid of it. When I purchased it, it barely ran. The motor was "in" but was not in any way capable of handling the road.

Booty

Some aftermarket gauges that didn't work properly.

It had a 350 Small Block Chevy with a weird 2 1/2 to 2 to 1 3/4 exhaust setup. That was going to go.

Interior was pretty trashed. Age and sun had its way with the leather.

Cleaned up! Kinda. It had boost and shift light setup for drag racing, but there was no way it was capable of doing anything besides breaking.

For sitting a long time, it was actually extremely clean underneath.

Another interior shot.

This was the worst part. There were lines, hoses, and electrical wires all over the place that made no sense. It would spit oil, leak like crazy, and idle terribly.

It didn't take long until some serious work on the engine bay was needed. During the winter, and with the help of friends, we tore down the block and replaced every gasket under the sun. Added in rollers, cam, and a few other modifications for a bit of extra power.

15x10's all around for helping with the traction issues from the stock 15x7's. Neat neochrome lugs for the hell of it.

Re-upholstered seats.

I thought I was done. HA. HAHAHAHA

How it looked in 2014

Changed to switch system and eliminated a lot of the electrical mess. I wish I knew that I was going to tear it all back out in 2017.

Derpy looking thing, isn't it?

It underwent some surgery over the winter of 2014 to 2015. That included: dual side exhaust, custom intake hood, timing changes, increased boost, aftermarket brakes, and more.

Starting to look somewhat cleaner.

In June of 2015, I tried something new: Plastidip. The car had its fair share of scratches, spider-cracks, bumps, and other imperfections. At the time, I couldn't afford a full paint job so we fixed the body imperfections and dipped over it!

Plasti-dip is a rubber material that lays in coats on objects. After enough coats it will become thick enough for you to eventually peel off. The reason many people use it for temporary paint applications, or for looks.

This plasti-dip was caramel mocha and was fun to apply, but terrible to look at.

It wasn't bad but it didn't take long for me to come to the realization it was terribly boring.

I had a local artist come in and have some fun with the car. He came up with this design for the rear quarter panel.

Another shot of the drawing.

2015 - November. It's last burnout before season ended in Wisconsin.

You can't plasti-dip things that get hot so the engine bay was still blue. Awkward, I know.

The winter of 2015 I decided enough was enough. We were going to make this thing right.

Shaving the rear end.

Cleaning 40+ years of junk.

Fixing all the imperfections and molding side skirt.

Fixing the cracking.

#ugly

After removing everything from the car, we took it to a business partner's shop for the paint work.

Hurdur.

In progress

So bare.

Interior received POR-15 throughout to prevent any rust and underside was recoated as well. 0% rust on this thing!

Engine bay after primer.

Shaved bumper after primer!

another shot before paint.

First spray!

No clearcoat yet but I loved the decision to go with white.

Clear sprayed and dried.

Hood scoop has to match the rest of the black!

Underside of the hood is black while the top is white. Creates a pretty cool contrast when the hood is open.

On the ground!

Painted in lovely white. Right after I got it back from the shop.

How it looks as of October 2016.

1 MPG LOL

Interior shot after intalling the T56 6-Speed transmission out of a Dodge Viper.

Dirty, i'm sorry.
Forged Internals
6lbs of boost
Refinished engine block
bored to 355
T56 6-Speed Transmission
Few other goodies. :)

Booty.

Fiance and I after a short cruise.

It wasn't long until I wanted something more unique. I hit up Brinkworth in Canada and they made a set of Brinkworth flares for my 280Z. A shop in Appleton Wisconsin known as Fitment Inc. (Offsets Garage) was happy to take on the project.

Read the note.

Prepping for the overfenders.

PHONE PIC

I told their team I didn't want photos of them cutting into it. So what did they do? They took photos and sent it to me.

Test fit with the new wheels.

Getting there.

New wheels > old wheels

Coming home after two months.

Finished product!

Finished product x2

I really love the back end of it.

Sunset during a weekend show in Wisconsin called Automotion.

One more butt photo.

If you're bored, I actually have a Youtube channel where I share my automotive adventures and garage times; it's called Automotive Millennial. I'm no professional, but hey it's fun for me. :)

If you have any questions about your Z or looking to get into tinkering with one, feel free to shoot me a message and i'll try to help you out!

Thanks for reading, I hope it wasn't too terrible.

Damn, didn't realize you could fit a blower under the hood in a 280

While I'm not a huge fan of the style (wish it was period personally) I respect it. A lot. You put a lot of work into that. Kudos.

Its a beauty. Great Work @OP , really admire the effort you've put into it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the car looked better when you started than it did when you were finished.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I know nothing of cars, but appreciate beauty in all its forms.

OP after the brown coating

Thank you!

You mean booty?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Came for booty, stayed for mass effect cat.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yay

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally not a fan of the fenderflares nor the V8 swap, but to each their own. Just glad that you properly restored it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Impressed AF. Nice job.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Thank you sir.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Glorious AF.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

Gracias senor.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For a minute, I thought it was my brother's car. He is restoring one as well and it is white also.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Does he post on forums often?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't know if he ever does. But I go over there about once a month. I will ask him this week.

Love the angular wide body fenders with the custom intake hood. Just subscribed. I love 280z's and I've been dreaming of doing this

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looked really good when you painted it. Looks pretty awkward now with the flares. And I'm normally a fan of flares.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What a roller coaster of emotions

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

How do you mean haha

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The aquisition, the rebuild, the teardown, the repaint, I love it, however I'll admit that stock z's are my favorite, but any z is a good z

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha, so well worded. Thank you man. I want my second z to be stock besides suspension

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Neat, but you should've kept the old color, old hood air intake, and the old body. Just my opinion

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

old scoop says "i have stuck a supercharged V8 in my Datsun!" whereas the new scoop says "some weird priest's head is stuck through my hood"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I agree. Its their car.. glad I'm they're happy with it but personally I prefer some of the "in progress" pictures.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Should have stopped after painting it white IMO. Stretched tires and flares are too much.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

I agree with the tires, just looks so derpy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you take a look at my old 1968 Datsun 2000 seems to running a little hot

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

lol

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Broke my heart when it burned. Got a recall from Datsun 1 week after about a possible fuel line problem. Got it replaced with a new 1969

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you have any z's now?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, my driving for fun days are long gone.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sad day. You should pick up another sometime!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

God it looked great until the bolt-on flared fenders-- ugh.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's such a great looking car in its factory condition, take all the bits off.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Needs more boost

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

THE ROTSUN, can't wait until they split the block on the 302.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ROTSUN! the one car where you arent sure of the tetanus will kill you, or the car itself.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love it, absolutely love it. But I gotta say bruh, those fender flares look horrible. Maybe if you painted the gasket white to match....

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dat, son, is a classic car done right.

9 years ago | Likes 86 Dislikes 8

Everything but the engine and rims is perfect.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much!

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'd upvote you but you're at 69

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I forgot to say in your last post, thank you for not going G Nose. As an avid Z lover I think it is over played. Nice build!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not a fan of G Nose either, but thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

we'll bang ok?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can't tell if you're James May or Richard Hammond

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This...this brings tears of joy. Being a 240 hound for years, my next love affair will be a S30 for sure. Fucking fantastic!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favorite car. Planning on restoring one now :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good luck!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Flares killed it for me, but nice ride. Hard work better than store bought.

9 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

The black rubber between the flares and the body is what make it kinda weird. Everything else looks really good.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree. Flares look terrible.

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

kind of like making out with a girl then she farts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

God why do people ruin otherwise serviceable cars with flares

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

isn't it to fit larger tyres with wider offsets? I'm hating them too but if they're what makes the new wheels fit...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Trends. Why did people ruin so many RX-7s and Supras with neons after the first fast and furious movies? Regret comes later.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Rarely do I use the word but today, the two vocabulary generals turned their keys in sync and I pushed the big red button of MAGNIFICENT!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks man =)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not a huge fan of blowers on them but i love what you did with yours. I'm sure the 350 makes more power but I love the inline 6 if I 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 133 Dislikes 0

So you're telling me that we have a Datsun here, and somebody cares? This is contrary to what Jurassic Park taught me.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just picked up an 1991 r32 Skyline. It needs a lot of love, but man those I6 engines are awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You should make posts about the build progress :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm very jealous. What color? Pics?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

V8 swaps are love, V8 swaps are life.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

swaps are nice and all but swapping out an RB26DET (if it's a gt-r) is about as close to completely unnecessary as it gets.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends how much you have to spend, a LS with a no limit build will easily break 1,000+ HP

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you can get 800+ out of an RB without fucking up the balance too which will probably be faster around the track. Not everything needs an LS

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

20det or?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i'd wager rb26det, because considering imports costs it's probably a GT-R

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not necessarily USA, r32 is common and cheap around here.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

granted if it's australia or the UK or some other right hand driving country than it's probably cheaper to get

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

find one with the electrical and motor sorted decently I'll probably leave it as is. Good fucking work man. I'm jealous.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I want to get one and either do the RB26DET or the 350z motor in it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I promised myself the next Z I won will have the I6 in it. As long as you are ok with finniky motors. ;p

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I say I'm okay with that now but I've been blessed with easy cars thus far... I'm due for some torment hahaha

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've had my 300zx TT for almost 10 years now, if you want to keep your sanity don't try to work on one of those :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Welcome to Z ownership! haha
