The what?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is really dumb.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok, hear me out... What if they actually moved when you pedal?!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve got trash balance and vertigo issues. Stationary bikes are all the exercise with none of the falling over or face planting for me.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Someone told me what "soulcyclers" were, and I laughed for 15min.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well I can't fall off a stationary bike...duh. Well actually I can cause I'm 'speshial'.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favorite part of stationary bikes is using them in front of a TV. It works well when playing video games CSU’s will subconsciously 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pedal faster when I make my character run. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get the joke, but unless you have nice long trails near you, a stationary bike is a great way to exercise.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Is the epiphany that you can ride a bike, outside in the fresh air, and not be the asshole holding up 40 cars on their way to work?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The epiphany being that your city has no bicycle lanes?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its a whole new expensive/safety game riding your bike for exercise id honestly keep that for enjoyment and ride stationary bikes for health

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I get the joke but if I lived somewhere like LA I'd never ride my bike. Horrible traffic, over populated, cars don't give a shit about bikes

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This right here is real dumb, for the myriad reasons already mentioned in the comments. How is this on FP?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can still laugh at the irony without taking it seriously? I stationary bike and I still thought it was funny. Didn't feel made fun of

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't feel made fun of. I get the joke, I dunno, just grumpy today I guess. But not anything I took personally.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I prefer the treadmill over walking. Controlling the speed/pitch without worry of people/terrain/etc is great.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some of us regularly and loudly get mocked for our size while working out but also like outdoors. I just wanna pedal without feeling bad.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still funny though.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Na man spin class is great conditioning for cycling. You can control the resistance and practice what you need to improve on.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Thinking on it, my mom should probably do this instead... She has fallen a couple times hitting dirt patches on her bike

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

There's a gym in my home town that has a stadium style arrangement of bikes looking out of a giant glass window out to the ... largest 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

system of dedicated bike paths in the country, running along wooded areas along the river valley. I never understood it. Several paths 2/3

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

go right infront of the window. I get stationary bikes. I *dont* get staring at people actually biking while you do. 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's, uh, there's a non-zero chance they're enjoying the scenery and are relatively unconcerned with the bikers. In fact...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I know this may blow the bikers' minds, but the scenery may be the *main draw* of that window! Crazy, I know.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That seems really odd, then, since the window is pointed away from the river

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd rather go mountain biking

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funny but in their defense it’s motivating to have the structure of an instructor and you can’t get that on the road.

6 years ago | Likes 241 Dislikes 2

Plus being on the road sucks

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Personally, wanting to get to a specific place, and seeing change of scenery, is more motivating than numbers on a screen or instructors.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

you can go as a group, and preferably you're doing it outside of town

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You also can't bike at maximum speed without stopping when you're riding outdoors.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That and traffic tends to be aggressive towards cyclists.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

You have to get it from yourself.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Different people respond to different motivators.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't "have" to, actually. It's perfectly okay for people to seek motivation from a professional motivator. Works for lots of people.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Right, it's not cycling, it's a spin class. Similar equipment but very different activity.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Exactly. It's like saying "Why are these guys lifting weights at the gym when there's plenty of physical labor to do on a farm."

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Terror certainly is a good motivator, keeps the heart rate up

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

The sudden realization you've gone a long way and now have to go all the way back to your car/home can also be a good motivator.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More watts or you get the resistance increase again!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Honestly I'd like to be able to pedal my face off and not worry about where I'm going, traffic, cycling into the wind, controlling elevation

6 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Or having to save enough energy to get home!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You always have enough energy to go home. I do 12 hour shifts mostly on ke feet and I can still cycle home over a massive fucking hill.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

My stamina is horrible, so I really admire all the people that can handle biking in hill country! It looks like quite the workout.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I started I couldn't cycle all the way up it and had to get off and push to the top.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, I can imagine sudden weather changes can f things up if a stray storm rolls through

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wind makes riding so much better.

6 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 3

when its behind you. 15 mph even a little to the side makes riding a bitch.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I was thinking of the wind from your own movement.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll even take head winds rather than side ways

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

15 mph headwind & i'm just going to stay home

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know what you mean but gotta get to work

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bike is your only transpo? i salute you! once was for me & i know what a bitch that is!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or so much worse

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk, no matter how many beans I eat it doesn't make me faster.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And a bear chasing you.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

So when cyclists are on the road, drivers shit themselves with rage, but then mock them if they do this kind of thing? Make your minds up.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Do you think the people who hate cyclists on the road and the people mocking this are the same people? Is that really what you think?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you're going to invoke irrational people like that, you can't also accuse them of rationality.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fair.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They’re getting exercise they won’t get on the flat city streets (assuming they live somewhere without hills). They also won’t get hit by

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

IDK, I rode my bike across fort wayne (southwest to northwest) and got quite a workout. About 3 hours of riding total, some of it in grass

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(this is due to how the bike trails there are a joke and don't actually connect with each other)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk how close to Fort Wayne when I was little, but is that the one where 1 trail ends and leads right into that patch of really tall bushes?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i think I know where you mean, but they've made more bike paths (mostly in well-to-do areas) since then too. They're still not viable to 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

travel across town though; I had to ride my bike on _colosseum_ to get where I needed to be

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

a car here.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

A smooooth criminal

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Like sitting in your car to play Forza

6 years ago | Likes 410 Dislikes 19

You understand street racing is illegal and track racing is super expensive, right?

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Agreed, not to mention tires for the track.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

FRIK YEA!!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not as good as driving your porche 911 to play Doom

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

uhhh i want to play a realistic racing game, not actually drive and get my self killed.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Or others.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Iracing.com and get a g29. Youre all set.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thanks to xcloud you can do that now.

I mean not ganna lie if I had a Tesla I would , be fun playing in full simulation . Can do a lot more in a game car than real car

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

*janna

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not exactly planning on driving my car 100+ or in races in real life

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As a cyclist, stationaries are for exercise. Constant stopping at lights, watching for cars, and avoiding obstacles takes away from it.

6 years ago | Likes 1531 Dislikes 18

Don't you want to spend half the day in the car driving yo wjere you're going cycling?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It’s also nice for those of us who can’t ride real bikes!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Never considered this. No sarcasm /ns

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like to bike in the great outdoors. Little stopping.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cyclists don't do any of those things and you know it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also when it's 37 degrees and raining sideways, cycling gets much less fun.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Just switch to the metric system then it will be super hot instead.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I’m all about that #Zwift life

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this is BS. i’ve never once witnessed someone on a bike stopping at a light or stop sign

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I never ride on paved roads. Dirt back roads or trails.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Denver, we have hills, so still a good workout.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Demand better cycling infrastructure.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cyclists stop at lights?

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 13

NY here. They don’t follow any basic traffic laws because 75 pounds of metal pipes will save you from a 2 ton vehicle

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol not in Toronto. They'll also yell at you if they run a stop sign and almost hit you, crossing in a crosswalk. They also get hit by cars

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

a lot here, but that's probably unrelated.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Why don't you go cycling on a closed circuit? That way you don't bother cars and other cyclists

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Also soul cycle is totally different. It’s like dancing on a bike. It’s actually really fun, and I highly recommend trying it

6 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

Even the creators acknowledge it’s more about an experience than a workout. Tales abound of crying in class from releasing pent-up emotions.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Yeah exactly. It’s really cathartic and you always feel better afterwards.Dunno why people feel the need to knock it when they’ve never tried

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can you promise I won't turn gay if I try it?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If soul cycle turns you gay then I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you were gay already

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You'll be fine if you skip the dildo-seat attachment.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Just remember that the seat post is supposed to have an actual seat...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to live pretty close to the waterfront, I'd have to drive through some busy traffic to get to it, but once I was there I could just

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

cycle forever, there was a nice long path, even on busy days where I'd have to dodge some people it was great.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Within 10 miles of my house there are multiple 5mile+ bike trails. One in a prairie, a forest preserve, a lake, and one thats just a trail

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 9

Trail behind the houses and buildings that goes 8miles... So i must confess i get frustrated by the amount of cyclists clogging traffic on

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

The busy roads. Especially some of the busy country roads with no shoulders. Anyways plenty of trail without needing to stop for traffic 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

I'm guessing cyclists on the road and cyclists on the trails are riding for 2 very different reasons.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

So, 10 miles of riding to get to the trail? Brilliant! Oh and commuters are on the road. Share the damn road! Not all have cars.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I'll share the road but don't get mad when I'm behind you and you're going 15-20 in a 35+ lane and I start slamming the horn

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Eh 140 characters isnt enough to explain. I live in an urban area and it just isnt safe. Cyclists get hit by cars often here.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That’s why rail trails are bliss.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I actually kinda like it. Keeps me agile in my mind. Always thinking of alternative little routes instead of traffic. Like a puzzle.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I enjoy this too. Even driving I take lots of detours

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also I've never been yeeted off a stationary bike at 35 mph into a bush.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My sentiments with treadmills also. I have anxiety of needing to pee in the middle of an open trail in the middle of nowhere

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The theft of my bike was bittersweet. I gained weight. But I stopped having constant fear of collisions. Also, cigarette smoke + smog.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree. I've never done stationary biking, only regular cycling, but I understand wanting to use it purely for exercise.

6 years ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 1

Its tough to find a good 20-30 mile stretch to ride with minimal cross streets so you're not stop & going constantly. Bonus if it's a trail

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Treadmills hurt my joints and I have to concentrate on not falling off. On a cycle I can just close my eyes and zone out

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I can train MUCH harder on a stationary because I can just close my eyes and push without having to worry about getting greased by a car

6 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 0

Had my first accident last week...looked down to adjust my music and went right into the back of a dudes pickup. Thankfully his bumper 1/

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Grabbed the wheel and stopped me dead in my tracks, but damn if I didn't almost wipe out. That's a lesson learned

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Damn, i just got a fine for pressing play on an audio while riding my bike :l

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

ah but if you do you don't have to worry about getting any more exercise!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

certainly makes organized classes much easier and safer to have the bikes stay in 1 place.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plus, if you're horribly out of shape and trying to fix that and live in a hilly/car-dominated place, it's a lot easier to start stationary.

6 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 1

It's a lot like how push ups are useless to people who aren't at the point of being able to do their first one yet.

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

You can do pushups on high surfaces first and then gradually go lower.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Or push ups from your knees

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh, yeah, for sure, but that's still a different exercise to get you *to* regular ones.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Oh no no no, not a cycling class though. Dear sweet baby Jesus the classes will kick your ass in ways you never knew possible.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

*That being said, TRY ANYWAY, FOLKS! Us old-timers know you'll suck and it's okay. We'll cheer you on til you can make it!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Oh, yeah. You don't go into an actual organized class unless it's very specifically at your level. 'Not setting yourself up for failure' 101

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I always just tell the newbies, "You're gonna suck so hardcore today and that's ok. Just keep moving!"

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I'm never going to purposely put myself in a situation where someone has to tell me that to keep me from giving up. Not in my wiring.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

plus after 5km...you arent 5km away and have to bike back

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Totally correct. Not to mention there’s an inherent risk to biking that is obviously absent from being stationary. ??

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

With stationary bikes you don't have to worry about being two tired (get it 2 tired) to make it back home

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Or for recovering after an injury, or when the weather really, really fucking sucks.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

/laughs in Dutch.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Username checks out.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, stationaries can have little TVs on them. :D

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Real ones can too, but you don't tend to ride as long...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also more dangerous. You can run into people, or into the street, or off the road, etc.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, that's why you don't ride as long. :P

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Living in the city is the problem.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I kinda understand wanting the cardio without wanting to be on safety alert. Better to stay put than become one of "those" bikers, no?

6 years ago | Likes 733 Dislikes 12

Cyclists*

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Those bikes and the classes are excellent for those of us that ran our knees into dust

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Also most cycling classes do different exercises like one leg or standing to work different muscles

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Yes, spinning is not just simulating going out on the road. It includes "hills" and other sets that you don't really get from riding around>

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A mostly flat city, where you can't just sprint away because you have to obey traffic stops, etc. It's a fitness class.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

People just don't want others biking period, is the takeaway I'm getting

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

YES, ALL OF THIS. PLEASE do not become one of 'those'.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This. I have ADHD. I try only to bike/drive when I have to and will avoid if I am having a bad day. Its better for everyone.

6 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 2

It's not just me! I know u probably weren't intending for this but this actually made me feel a bit better today. Thank you!

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same, thanks!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Narcolepsy. Same.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry. That's super scary to me. Could call it a phobia. That and having my beard catch on fire

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also you can pedal to your limit without havimg to worry about making it back home.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Or breaking speed limits. I don't know if this is true everywhere but you can get in real trouble for speeding cycling some places.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

A(n American) friend of mine discovered this while living in DE. Got into an accident on his bike, ended up spending big $$ for speeding.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't think the adhd has anything to do this but ok

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

ok? I guess?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Ah... Dedicated bike lanes and paths.. just one of the perks of being Dutch

6 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 6

*Laughs in Portland* Sure, I have to avoid a four square block area due to “rioting”, but it’s dope otherwise.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

We have those in the states too, doesn't stop cyclists from being asshats on the road.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We have those here but cyclists think they are impervious to harm and choose to bike on the road instead.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are places in the US that have those, but many bikers refuse to use them in favor of streets.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Where I live they're so poorly maintained they might as well be paved with a layer of broken glass, nails, and debris.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That wont stop a reckless or drunk driver from hitting a biker. The lanes are actually just painted lines in the ground, not physical barrie

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Many in the netherlands are fully separate, especially in cities

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

rs.*

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The Dutch have mostly separated paths for bikes and cars. Making accidents a lot less likely. But of course crossings exist.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, dedicated bike paths (not lanes) don't share the same road as cars

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oddly enough that hardly ever happens. No-one wears a helmet, besides Spandex-clad idiots who think they're in the Tour de France.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And tourists. If you ever see someone biking unsteadily with an helmet on, you can be sure it's a tourist :)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even in the Netherlands you occasionally have to stop or slow down or whatnot, which isn't good when your workout calls for 5 minutes of

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

balls to the wall effort.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you can stop anytime you want and still be just a few yards away from your car...no commitment on “going too far” or getting lost

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thats why I got an ebike. I'm out of shape and can enjoy a ride but know if I go to far I have a motor to fall back on

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in an area that's hot all year round. Exercising in A/C is a must for me!

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Plus once you're exhausted, you just hop off. No hoping you realize you're tired in time to get home

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

And no lugging it home because of a flat or mechanical failure

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah my old house was on top of a really steep hill and I stopped biking to work out after a few weeks

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
