I hated ceremonies. My sergeant "pinning" was me leaning back in my chair and saying "when are you filing for my promotion?" and my CO saying "Oh yeah, you're a sergeant now." It was the best ceremony I've ever had.
We play games for reenlistment ceremonies as well, one official usually short as possible and one heinous. I had my fat ass male senior enlisted dress like a mermaid at the beach
When I re-enlisted as a Sergeant, while I was "you're a civilian now, you can say anything" before taking the enlistment oath again, I turned and said (to the CO) Fuck you! (to the XO) Fuck you! (to the Company GySgt) You, I like. (to the Company 1stSgt) But fuck you!! Two weeks later I pinned on Staff Sergeant...and my CO got me back. He palmed my Staff Sergeant pins, and pinned Corporal chevrons on me, instead.
For my SGT pinning, my Platoon SSG punched them into my collarbone, then we had to run the gauntlet through all the NCOs hitting us. Not as bad as it sounds.
When I was "blood striped" when I picked up corporal (gauntlet of Corporals and Sergeants knee you in the thigh), one Sergeant tagged me directly in the Sciatic nerve so hard...well, let's just say I said, "oh, fuck!! that hu..." and I woke up on the floor.
That’s gutsy. I had my former platoon sergeant pin my promotion, and my current platoon sergeant wasn’t happy about that. I can’t imagine a delivery guy!
It's his "blood stripes." Only NCOs and officers wear the red stripe on their dress blues trousers, Once you are promoted to corporal, you have "earned" your blood stripes, and they are draped around your neck during the promotion ceremony
When my husband was in Thailand, he had the owner of their local laundry/fish and rice spot to pin him during his ceremony (which they held at the laundry lol)
Had more commendations, citations and rank on paper than I ever got to wear. I excelled in the field, deployments and training. Garrison life was an utter disaster. I should have been jailed multiple times but was let off easy. By the time I left I was on Prozac and Klonopin. The Army did nothing wrong my coping mechanisms where shot is all. Humor above all else kept me sane. Thru it all tho I completely enjoyed my service time a little too much. GIVE IT HELL CORPORAL
I had a giant Staff Sergeant hammer my corporal rank into my collar bones like a real man... who cried after... wife was wondering why I was bleeding, a lot.
When I graduated from ABN school we spent the night punching our wings into our tits... good times... we were fucking hammered tho, we all went OSUT 11B straight to ABN school... we had been, um, deprived a bit for awhile.
Oh man, I remember. That first weekend you're allowed to go to the gas station and seriously injure your liver was like every Christmas ever all at once.
We piled into a van, told them 'nearest liquor store' bought a bunch of bottles, got a hotel room and got rickety rickety wrecked... (we had some underage kids with us that we couldn't get into a bar and I was the old man at 24).
How very pre-NCO mafia of you. I dropped some insignia on the concrete floor of our Barracks at El Toro and stepped on it and had to yank it out of the bottom of my heel. That sucked. That was enough body modification for me. Ha
They were making us hammer rank on to one of my buddies. I went easy on him, until our sergeants started yelling at me to do it like I mean it. I shrugged, turned around and hammered them into his clavicles. He had to physically yank them out, and by the look on his face and sounds coming out of him, it was extremely uncomfortable.
That is the intent, the pure joy of inflicting pain on new NCOs (esp if they are Army corporals who didn't even get a pay raise and now get to be in charge of every shit detail on post)
It's a form of hazing, officially banned but still happens in some units. "Blood wings" are probably the most well known version, but it can be done with any pinned insignia.
It is commonplace in the Marine Corp and Navy. You go off on a 6 month "cruise" and then get back, have ton of money to spend, so you get drunk, do something stupid, get arrested, then military punishes and demotes you. Get rank back after a little time and rinse and repeat.
*On occasion* a person receiving a rank/award gets to request a specific person "pin" them (put it on during the ceremony.) Usually it'll be a commander but its not uncommon for someone to ask that its a friend or a spouse. Ol boy had been punished previously by his command so rather than having them pin him he had someone he respected more do it.
I think they meant to ask what NJP means And what the difference between lance and corporal is. I think maybe we mostly know what it means to receive a rank or reward.
NJP = non-judicial punishment, the kind of shit an officer can do to their subordinates without needing to go through a court martial (a military court). Corporal and Lance Corporal are Marine corps rank, the former outranking the latter. The guy got busted down one rank, which is a big deal because it's a significant change in pay (about a $250 a month pay cut) and a major speed bump for anyone looking to go career. 1/
Further, if they've not changed duty areas since they got busted down, it could be the same officer who demoted them in the first place doing them the "honor" of pinning the "new" rank on... hence why they may choose the Jimmy John's guy instead, if they didn't agree with the original punishment. 2/2
God I'd have killed to have had in a war zone in rural Afghanistan the ROE (Rules of Engagement) a comparatively untrained police officer has in downtown Clarksville, Tennessee.
Dude got an Company Grade Article 15 for being a dick, went from E4 to E3, then got promoted back to E4 and had some sandwich delivery dude pin his rank back on

The bond between a Camp Lejeune marine and a Jimmy John's delivery driver is second only to their bond with a Domino's delivery driver.

Someone please translate the military terminology for us laymen.

"NJP" is non judicial punishment (jail/brig time not an option), a demotion in rank this time. Yoyo-ing in rank is apparently a thing.
