Kingpin was released July 26, 1996. I saw it in the theaters opening night with my best friend. We were 12. His older brother dropped us off and said we would have to find our own ride back home. We didn’t originally intend to see Kingpin that night. We went to the theater to see Joe’s Apartment which was released the same day.

After Joe’s Apartment ended we called my friend’s dad from a pay phone to pick us up. He refused and said he was absolutely not going to come get us. The father suggested we call a cab and then ditch it. His mother was out of town so we couldn’t ask her. We had no way of contacting his older brother. If my parents found out they would never let me spend the night at his house again.

Not knowing what to do we walked into another theater to watch Kingpin. After that film his dad agreed to pick us up and proceeded to berate us the entire drive home for not handling the situation ourselves like men. We were 12.

Glad you watched at least one good movie that day.

Bill Murray's hair getting wilder and sillier as he throws strikes is some of the best slapstick I've ever seen.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I guess that’s annoying. My dad would’ve kicked the shit out of me when we got home

You don't mow another man's lawn

The year was 1996. You're in your 'mid-30's now. He's probably in his 60 or 70s or dead. You could probably kick his ass. :D

He was in his 60s then. My friend was the youngest of 16 spanning multiple women. Weird life experience.

@op what happened to your friend in later life? Just curious how he ended up if his dad was like that.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Raised by two narcissists he grew up to be a narcissist himself. He can be a real handful to deal with at times. He never really grew up.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you are still friends too?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah. We’ve been friends since we were six. He’s moved across the country, but we keep in touch. Over 30 years of knowing each other.

Gregg Turkington, is that you? Awesome movie, awesome post @OP! haha

I'm a Gregghead, fight me now.

this scene may be one of the funniest things my father's ever seen. he still cracks up when someone's bad hair reminds him of this.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Murray actually bowled the strikes. That’s why he and everybody in the crowd seemed to be going genuinely batshit.

In '07 I had a Major surgery, first time on REALLY strong pain meds so my stoner dad brought me Joe's Apartment, Kingpin & the Sting. Damn

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

good call to bring me damn good movies. Joe's apartment didn't hold up over time. The other 2 still do

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Masterpiece.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Embarrassed to say that I have never seen it. It never seems to be on any of the streaming services in the UK

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If you like really stupid comedies it is worth the 2.99 on amazon. Bill murray at his finest

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I do, so I’ll take the plunge .... I’ve only ever heard positive things about it

Chris Elliot is so creepy in a mesmerizing way.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mad comic genius. His show was bizarre. Got spelling powers from toxic waste, used it to cheat spelling bees to win a bejeweled dictionary.

The dad and the brother tbh

5 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 1

I don't think that's enough information to go on to say that the brother is a pos. He might have had his own plans that little bro messed up

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

We sprung this on the brother last minute. He absolutely did not want to take us. I can’t fault him in this situation, but he is a POS.

5 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the call a cab and ditch it part was staggering. That's some Ricky-style parenting.

5 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 0

good way to get your ass kicked by a cab driver, like imagine your friend hops out taxi driver locks the doors then he kidnaps you and sells

—— I was in trouble for not having my room clean and hung up on me. Lots more little moments like that from my dad as a kid ??

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Mine got mad at me for not picking him up from the bar 20 miles away at 3am, I was "not his son" but I was 13. Memories.
