There is a thin layer of water on the paper in the shape of the butterfly so when the ink hits it it all mixes in ;water doesn't spread

The paper was prepared for the ink, which is why the pattern is so specific. Probably made to repel the ink until it covered the whole image

It looks like its embossed, meaning some areas of the paper is higher than others, so as the color spreads through the water it settles 1/2

I was guessing that the color thing has something to do with the size of the particles that make up each color.

The ink probably isn't black, just so concentrated it looks like it. When spread out, most dark inks go from black to their specific colors

I'm guessing the paper is pre-treated with certain chemicals. As it reacts or soaks or whatever, it changes predictably.
