#16 You can still buy media, and frankly it's essential if you want independent media to be made. If you only consume media that you've pirated, then you're largely consuming corporate media.
Personally I'd rather forgo corporate media entirely to rob the corporations of their cultural power. Fuck Harry Potter and fuck Disney. I don't need them in my life.

#16 I feel like this one is backwards. Media companies didn't push streaming, they were very very happy with billions in VHS and then DVD sales of popular movies. No, people chose streaming for its ease and convenience, and it killed physical media sales. Is it any surprise at that point media companies decided "I guess we're doing streaming services now?'
And now there are too many, their quality is diluted, and they're too expensive. We're reaping what was sewn.

The media companies have contracts with the streaming companies (or own them outright), and the contracts are favorable to all companies involved, at the expense of the artists.
Music especially. Right now Spotify costs a CD per month. How many people actually bought that much music even in the 90s? Some did, but probably not most. And despite it being easier than ever to get your music to audiences, it's harder than ever to make a career out of it.

My point is that they didn't force people into using them. Netflix, and people's consumer choices, killed physical media sales, so those media companies got into streaming. They didn't stop ownership to make people rent content; the people chose to rent content, so they got into the rental business.

For movies I at least get streaming, because it's very possible to watch a movie, absolutely love it, and have no desire to watch it ever again. There's a reason we rented DVDs and VHSs. I'll still advocate for buying movies that you know you'll want to rewatch though.
For music it's incredibly rare to like a song and not want to listen to it repeatedly. Having all music available for $13/month is a great deal for the consumer! But especially with spotify taking a big cut it's unsustainable.

I don't think that it's fair to blame services like Spotify for this entirely. A lot of this is also that as music slowly went from being primarily a fringe artform, deeply rooted in counter culture to a huge industry, rooted in profit, the market became saturated. I know it sounds like I'm just old man complaining like "music these days bad" but the fact is in the last 40 years the number of artists competing for the attention of even the most devoted audiences has absolutely exploded

So yes it's easier than ever to get your music to audiences but the other side of that sword is that you as an artist are now competing with far more other artists than ever before for the attention of that audience

Spotify was created to help big music labels like Sony and UMG to circumvent pricy royalty payments to artists that are common in regular broadcast scenarios, and is a big reason why Spotify hit the ground running with such a huge catalog of artists right out of the gate. The convenience to users is mostly used as justification to make sure artists get shafted while spotify lines their pockets.

Some of it is the inherent small revenue of a streaming model. Even if Spotify didn't take a cut, if I listened to it 8 hours every work day, 22 working days per month, at 3 minutes per song that's 3520 artists sharing that $13/month, for 0.37 cents per listen.
But Spotify takes a huge cut, meaning that Tidal pays artists THREE TIMES more.
Album sales are more important than ever though, and today is Bandcamp Friday, when they waive their cut of all sales.

"Fringe art-form?" When? The late 60s and early 90s were two magic periods where underground music hit the top forty. All of the rock groups that kinda sound like Metallica or Brian Wilson or Iggy Pop are the equivalent of all the pop singers who were still doing show tunes and torch songs in Iggy Pop's day.
