Make your own NES!

With all the current hype for the new NES machine coming out, I thought I might make a post on how you can build your own NES emulator with a raspberry pi for a fraction of the price of the new one. I reccomend using the (reasonably) new raspberry pi zero as it is only $5, however I am using a raspberry pi 2 as its the only on I have which I am not currently using.

RetroPie

RetroPie is a piece of software which allows you to emulate all of your favourite gaming machines (pre-ps2) on just a $5 computer!!! You can download the image for it from this link: https://retropie.org.uk/download/.

Burn baby, burn.

In order for the pi to run this OS you must first burn the image to a micro sd card, I recommend using win32 disk imager: https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/.

Boot up time.

Now to boot up and test. Connect the pi to a power source (5v micro usb), a controller (like the usb one below), a monitor (preferably hdmi), and an ethernet source. You can connect the pi to wi-fi also by using a usb wifi dongle or even the built in wifi on the rpi 3.

You can buy them from amazon or ebay for very cheap :)

The software comes with a bunch of emulators, nes, snes, gba, gbc, n64, atari you name it...However none of them will pop up unless you add in some roms.

Adding roms.

You can find roms all over, to start off I just decided to go for roms for 3 machines: n64, snes and nes. Anyways, when you have your roms you can go to your main computer and access your pi remotely, if you are using windows simply go into networks and you can (hopefully) find it in there.

Setup

I decided to setup my new system using an old monitor (mounted on a bracket) and usb pc controller.

I mounted the pi on the back of the monitor and connected up everything (ethernet cable was no longer required as the roms are on the pi).

TIME TO PLAY

The software has a lovely UI, simply swipe left and right to change consoles!

Yo, the RPi3 can handle up to Dreamcast emulation. It's insane.

They should have made the games available as packs on small cards... Then pick the pack you wanna play and go..Could release way more games.

I tried making one out of a Pi 2 and a Pi 3. Both keep crashing, though I'm using a known good card, no overclock, and heatsinks/small fan

any tips on getting this thing stable?

How recently have you tried? Because I used to have problems like that but the new images are fantastic. No need to add bioses or anything!

just last month. i ended up giving up and getting a cheapo used miniitx board for 50 bucks. its a little bigger but can pull even ps2 games

No such thing as a stupid question, the DS and PSP are both supported. However, ps2 is not :(

Emulation is 100% legal as long as you own the console and games.

If I owned the console and games why would I emulate? Also, distribution of the ROMs is not legal without the copywriter's consent in the US

People tend to legally emulate because it's more convenient, takes up less space and for some games it improves the experience.

Yes but emulators and roms can be buggy and not work correctly with certain games. This is a cool show piece and tested to work properly.

The games should be free anyway since it's perfectly legal to download them, the copyright has expired. That's why Emuparadise is still fine

So why do they have thousands of games just freely available to download? I've never seen Emuparadise shut down.

I won't argue that the pi can do more. My comment was in response to ops "fraction of the price" remark. But I guess that's not even true.
